Cannaregio is the second largest sestiere (district) with its busy Santa Lucia train station. Many transplanted Venetians commute from the outlying areas, “terra firma” to the locals, which is shorthand for any place that is not Venice. Two Grand Canal bridges serve Cannaregio, the newest (Constitution, 2008) still a local hotbed of controversy. Ponte degli Scalzi is a busy link to the train station. Nearby shops on the Lista di Spagna offer specialties like pastries and coffee that lure Venetians with a down-to-earth attitude. The Ghetto, where the Jewish population was segregated in Cannaregio, has five historic synagogues with an active Jewish community. The Fondamente Nove bustles with foot traffic to the Rialto and San Marco while vaporettos (water taxis) head to Murano and other islands. Side streets lead into quiet picturesque neighbourhoods and palaces like Ca' d'Oro rise directly out of the water.

We loved this hotel. Even though it was close to the bus, train and water bus it was very quiet. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We enjoyed sitting in the courtyard in the evening. We had 6 in our group and had one standard triple and superior triple room. The price

I would give this hotel 100 stars if I could. The staff here is the most polite and understanding I have ever met. We had an issue with the company we booked the room through, but the staff's only concern was us enjoying our vacation instead of worrying about the payment our

We had a great stay at this hotel in early March. The front desk staff was very welcoming and helpful (including opening a bottle of wine we bought in Venice for us to enjoy at the hotel). There is no elevator but they offer to bring your bags up to your room if you need help.

We loved this hotel situated in a former monastery. It is within walking distance of the train station and Piazzale Roma and in a quiet side street off the main thoroughfare of Cannaregio. Our room was tastefully decorated with some unusual details, a very comfortable bed and

This hotel is great value for money. Located less than five minutes from the train station, it is in a fantastic location. Room was a bit dark with the furnishings but overlooked the little garden. Loved how the hallway to the rooms lit up like a red carpet as you entered it!

Our bathroom was modern, the sleeping room not, but this is an old building and atmosphere important. Never turned on the tv.

It depends upon how you are arriving. If by train, porters are readily available around the station, and I understand are relatively inexpensive (negotiate first). The hotel is one short block away, so not a long trip. If you are coming by boat, try to get to the train station piers.

The hotel is very close to the cruise port. The building across the street from the train station (look for Avis sign and then go past to the other side of the building) has a aerial shuttle station that charges 1 Euro (I think) and it whisks you right out to the ships.
