Cannaregio is the second largest sestiere (district) with its busy Santa Lucia train station. Many transplanted Venetians commute from the outlying areas, “terra firma” to the locals, which is shorthand for any place that is not Venice. Two Grand Canal bridges serve Cannaregio, the newest (Constitution, 2008) still a local hotbed of controversy. Ponte degli Scalzi is a busy link to the train station. Nearby shops on the Lista di Spagna offer specialties like pastries and coffee that lure Venetians with a down-to-earth attitude. The Ghetto, where the Jewish population was segregated in Cannaregio, has five historic synagogues with an active Jewish community. The Fondamente Nove bustles with foot traffic to the Rialto and San Marco while vaporettos (water taxis) head to Murano and other islands. Side streets lead into quiet picturesque neighbourhoods and palaces like Ca' d'Oro rise directly out of the water.

Very friendly, compact and clean hotel. Good glazing to keep out the canal noise outside at night. Easy to find, and just a short distance from the bus and train station. The continental breakfast was very good, with fresh fruit, cereals and croissants. They said they also had

I chose the Hesperia because of proximity to train and airport, and I had a family group (11). The staff helped us with restaurant reservations and getting us to the airport- it feels like a family run place and all are friendly. Location is quiet and out of the crowds. Rooms

There are many restaurants nearby. The en-suit rooms are a not all facing the canal As for clothes it will be chilly but it too cold. So long sleeves and a coat. I hope this helps.

How do you get the roof top room or canal view? Do you have to book a specific room or are they all just randomly allocated?
to have assigned the canal view or roof terrace rooms you have to book the superior ones ....

The water bus is definitely the cheapest option. We bought a return ticket at the airport, not sure what it cost as my partner bought it but it was not much. If you are staying at the Hesperia it is ideal as the bus stop is opposite the hotel on the other side of the canal, just one bridge to cross and a 5 minute walk. We had planned to buy a weekend pass for the water bus, but glad we didn't as everything is within walking distance and it is impossible to get lost in Venice despite all the wee streets. Have fun, we did !!
