Luxe and tradition; since 1863 the Grand Hotel des Iles Borromees is the place to stay while visiting the Maggiore Lake area. The builing, the public areas and the rooms feature all modern conforts while still keeping the same belle epoque atmosphere. The park is decorated with statues, fountains and rare plants and the view from the rooms and the restaurant is spectacular. The Medical SPA of the Grand Hotel des Iles Borromees is one of the first in Italy and can offer aesthetic treatments combined with a personalized diet.

My wife and I have just returned from a 6 night stay in this excellent hotel. It was our fourth visit and we certainly hope to be back next year. Our room was 315 which although billed as a garden view room is on the corner of the hotel which allows a partial view of the lake.
The service and friendliness of the staff was as usual of a very high standard. As my wife has some mobility difficulties we chose to dine in the restaurant each evening. The choice of food was wide and well cooked although on two occasions we had to ask for the dishes to be reheated .
I have given the hotel only 4 stars as the height of the bath tub was a challenge for my wife. However I was assured that this was planned to be rectified in the winter refresh by the provision of walk in showers in some of the rooms.

Make no mistake, this is a fabulous hotel, with a wealth of history and perfectly situated in a magical place, BUT for me it distinctly lacks those little touches that one would expect for the sort of prices you are paying. We went following a stay in a decent UK hotel that charged far less and had far more little touches (some of which may be a little British I admit). On arrival at the Iles des Borromees there are two tiny complimentary bottles of water - we stayed five nights and they were the only ones we got. In our UK hotel there was tea / coffee making facilities and biscuits or chocolates every day, in the Iles des Boromees, nothing. In our UK hotel a fabulous fruit bowl that guests could help themselves to - the Iles des Borromees, nothing. Not even an apple!!!
The pool is magnificent, with lockers and a finely kept changing area but if you want a 250ml bottle of coke it is 7 euros. Why? Guest are paying enough to stay here, why rob them with such ridiculous prices?
Perhaps more disappointing are the staff. They young lady by the pool was cheerful, jolly and very helpful as was the concierge but the breakfast staff were so unwelcoming it was unbelievable. They seemed frightened of the guests and there was literally no interaction. A smile would have been nice. We loved our stay in this fabulous hotel but if we went to Lake Maggiore again I would seek out a smaller hotel with a more homely feel.
One final question for the management. You have a wonderful garden right on the lake but the gate appeared to be locked half of the time and there were no benches or loungers for the guest to sit. Why? The only activity we saw there was a wedding. Reserved entirely for that purpose now I suspect?? Money makes the world go around.....

I just stayed here for the second time , the hotel is lovely and the staff friendly . We had dinner in the restaurant (booked in advance) which was very good with great service.
My room was not huge but I booked the cheapest level and did not expect a lake view! Turn down service is still automatic here , many stopped during pandemic.
I did not have chance to use the spa but from a quick look it is lovely, I plan to return for a longer stay.
Breakfast was good despite previous comments otherwise!
I suggest booking via hotel’s own website as many hotels give better rooms to those that do

A grand hotel with beautiful decor and very smart and efficient staff. The Spa is awesome. We stayed here for 10 days (still here) and the location (despite a busy/noisy main road outside) is superb with magnificent views of the lake and mountains.

We have a junior suite, however, much remains to be desired. There is no privacy on the balcony due to connecting with other balconies; the balcony itself is rather dirty and evidently hasn’t been cleaned for some time (all seem to be the same) and the flag tiles are not set - quite wobbly & noisy to walk on.

There are many dogs here, on the terrace at breakfast, in the dining hall at night, and around the pool. When relaxing in the bath, I can hear echo of people talking, singing and dogs barking from rooms down the corridors. Regarding the pool, I don’t wish to walk on grass with dog pee.

The Spa is excellent, though children are allowed 9-4 despite the notice which says “Shhhh” as it’s a relaxing area where people are paying over 100 euro for treatments, or more.

If you want to come here, don’t come at the weekend as there is an influx of Italian families and dogs who descend here and peace is certainly shattered.

Our room, which cost 400 euros a night, had a bedside lamp not working, a sink waste which did not work, one night without towels at all, and slow drainage in the bidet and shower. A hotel of this standard needs to look at attention to detail given what they are charging.

Breakfast has a wide choice of options, however, the ‘healthy option’ of celery and carrot is lacking as these are dried up. Cooked breakfast is limited: congealed scrambled egg with bacon and small sausage (undercooked). Evening meal choices are limited so I wish we had not chosen half board, and gone into Stresa for our evening meal, as menus often based on frozen fish and no consideration for allergies (my husband has shellfish allergy).

Overall, this hotel needs to look at providing customers with the level of service they are actually paying for.

We booked a two-night stay with a garden view and on arrival we were given the attic, long, dark and narrow room with three very small windows that you had to climb steps to see outside. I telephoned reception to ask for a different room and was told someone would come back to me, they never did. I had to go down to reception to request a move and was told they were fully booked tonight and that it might be possible tomorrow, hence we did not unpack. On arrival we were also shown the restaurant, but told they were fully booked that evening and we could not eat there. However, judging by our breakfast the following morning that was no bad thing, it was dreadful, the hot food was uneatable, and the service had a lot to be desired, we decided to forfeit our breakfast the following morning and eat elsewhere. We were thankfully moved the following day to another room with a balcony which if we had got for our two-nights as planned, may have made our weekend more enjoyable. The hotel is old, the staff are not pleasant or helpful. The only saving grace about this hotel is the Spa, which was lovely, although I would recommend putting a sign up that cameras are not permitted as there was a guest taking photos and videos on his mobile phone which was a bit off putting when you are trying to relax. We will NOT be staying in this hotel again and I would not say it was a five star stay.

Big problem is that hotel has made weddings at weekends a major focus. The weddings are so obtrusive as to make it unpleasant for other guests. Had to vacate terrace after wedding just outside started aggressively loud music with pounding base. Half an hour later, inside room, walls were vibrating with the base from the music. Had to take aspirin. Music echoed through our room right through the evening until late. The music does not stop until 11:30. (The reaction from the concierge: “there is nothing I can do about it.” Completely unacceptable for a hotel with five stars for room to be basically unusable for several hours Saturday and Sunday afternoons and uncomfortable into the evening. Don’t come here if you want a restful stay.

People have reported very mixed experiences, from rude staff to really helpful staff. We experienced both: a hostile reception at the pool bistro because we turned up for lunch without a reservation (followed by very spotty service); a warning at 10:25 that the breakfast buffet was going to be shut down at 10:30 sharp, which wasn’t aggressive but we didn’t really like; and concern at the restaurant that we shouldn’t have any problems at dinner.

Hotel itself is enormously improved for works done during pandemic: glamorous spa with indoor/outdoor pool, rather tired old rectangular pool outside replaced by series of elegant connecting pools; grungy restaurant facilities at pool replaced by snazzy new bistro. Rooms remain a bit tired and could do with some renovating. The best have balconies or terraces in terrific location overlooking Lake Maggiore. The main restaurant could not be described as gourmet but has improved over the years (regressing a bit with the pandemic) and the staff are very attentive. Very pleasant atmosphere for dinner. Service could do with some improvement at the pool.

This was our third visit here over last few years, but I do not think we are likely to go back. We like Stresa and are now looking for another hotel. I would advise against staying here, period, unless you have a good tolerance for continuously pounding music.

We stayed at the Grand Hotel des Iles Borremees for one night at the end our trip through Italy, where we were celebrating our niece’s birthday. It was also her first international trip. When we checked in we mentioned this to the front desk manager, Luca, and he proceeded to treat us like royalty. His enthusiasm and generosity made our stay so special.
The hotel itself is beyond words, dripping with opulence and glamour. Every inch is decorated with frescos, antiques, crystal chandeliers, gold leaf, statues, etc. It’s difficult to take it all in at first glance, but it’s oh so wonderful.
The spa, gym and pools, which have recently undergone a $30 million dollar renovation, is excellent. Unfortunately we didn’t have enough time to use the spa services but we did use the high tech gym.
Our room was on the top floor overlooking the lake and was just spectacular. The beds were comfy, and the shower and bathroom amenities were great. Every floor of the hotel has a different theme and decor, and ours was Grecian art.
The included breakfast buffet had everything one could want… eggs, cheeses, smoked salmon, cereals, multitude of breads, creamy made to order cappucino, fresh pressed juices, etc. and was delicious.
We have travelled all over the world and stayed in many 5 star hotels but this one takes the cake! Can’t wait to return.

Having read the latest reviews I felt compelled to write my own when I usually don’t bother. It honestly feels like the couple from the previous two reviews were staying in a different hotel yet apparently we were in the same hotel at the same time. Stunning hotel - no pictures do it the justice it deserves. Our room was spotless - cleaned and hoovered every single day and the bed is stripped and changed every day unless you ask them not to. They even come in of an evening and tidy and prepare your room prior to bed time too. Beautiful whirlpool bath in our room and my husband who showers has been more than capable of leaving the water off the bathroom floor!! Every member of staff encountered has been delightful and that is my opinion after a week not one night. Breakfast is fresh, bountiful and of a high quality every day - no complaints there at all. We too have stayed in many a 5 star hotel and believe this to be very worthy of that rating. Very, very sad to be leaving today.

We stayed at the Grand Hotel des isles Borromees where we had a 2 night stay from 16-18 August as a family of four, with our teenage boys. Before this we have had wonderful stays in Rome and Florence.

We left the morning after arrival as we were so disgusted at both the standards of hygiene but the rude manner in which we were treated.

Our arrival was fine, and the hotel does look grand on entering. The young receptionist was lovely and showed us to the room which was appreciated. Also there was a delightful tall gentleman in concierge.

However after the arrival we noticed that our room was very dusty and looked like it hadn’t been cleaned in weeks. There was human and dog hair on the carpet and several human hairs on the sheets. The toilet was dirty and there were marks on all the glasses. There were cobwebs on the ceiling. The Murano glass light fitting has loads of dust over it. I am asthmatic and within minutes of stepping foot into the room I felt my chest becoming tighter. We had to walk around in the slippers as we didn’t want to get anything on our feet. One bathroom smelt like an old people’s home (I used to be a GP so have lots of experience of this). The shower fitting was bizzarely placed over the bath with a small screen making it impossible not to soak the floor. The air conditioning just blew slightly cool air and hardly cooled the room at all (it was 33’ outside), making sleep difficult.

We tried to book the restaurant for dinner after arriving but despite assistance from the nice concierge gentleman the restaurant manager was dismissive and muttered ‘no tables’ before walking off without looking at us. Not exactly great service.

We at least hoped breakfast would be good but it was a huge disappointment (the worst I have seen in years). The selection was terrible, there were dozens of small flies over all the fruit and inside the fruit cases, the quality was poor (dried up carrots left on a table, cherry tomatoes with traces of soil that had to be wiped by us). We left hungry; I have had better breakfasts in cheap airport hotels in years gone by.

We were all so upset by this, particularly our 2 autistic sons. We wanted to leave and at the be try least only pay for our first night (we didn’t want to pay for the entire stay) but the receptionist was very unhelpful and rigid with no customer service whatsoever. The manager came and stood waving his arms around saying that no one else was complaining and then wanted to go to the room and breakfast as if we were lying. He steadfastly refused to waive the second night fee and had a very pompous fair about him (as did all the restaurant staff we encountered). He sent the housekeeping manager to the room who agreed that it was substandard, validating our opinion.

We stay around the world in 5 star properties and this was not befitting of any hotel let alone one that claims to be so grand. We hurriedly ran to the train station up a hill with all our suitcases in the boiling sun we were so desperate to get away and will not be returning.

Response from Gianluigi Mariani, Direttore generale at Grand Hotel des Iles Borromées & SPA
Responded 25 Aug 2023
Note to the TripAdvisor community: both Sally T and Owen T felt that a single negative review did not enough to convey their discontent, prompting them to submit two separate reviews regarding their stay. To ensure full transparency, I am sharing an identical response to both of these reviews. I thank the guests for selecting the Grand Hotel des Iles Borromees as their choice of accommodation and for the kind words of appreciation about some of the member of our staff, considering the overall poor evaluation; these few positive comments hold even greater significance. Our primary aim is to ensure complete satisfaction for all our guests, and while most of the times we achieve this, it is obvious that on this occasion we fell short of our goal. I deeply regret this outcome. Considering the unique family circumstances of the guests, even minor inconveniences can escalate into significant challenges. However, this review verges on being defamatory and therefore warrant a response. We do not claim to operate a completely sterile environment hotel, nor none of us has ever experienced staying in a "basic lodge in the middle of Uganda" but our guest rooms undergo daily cleaning. Our breakfast offerings comprises a wide array of choices, ranging from freshly sliced Parma ham, smoked ham to scrambled eggs, fresh dairy products bacon, sausages and much more, I find it difficult to understand how anybody can go hungry. It goes without saying that insects and soil dirt tomatoes are not a part of our offerings. We strongly recommend making restaurant reservations, a point that is clearly communicated on both our website and in the confirmation letters sent to all our guests. It was obvious that the housekeeper did not vacuum the room properly and we apologize for this but minor issues can be easily fixed with a minimum of cooperation, and we made every effort to let the guests understand this. We offered different alternatives to solve the issues they were complaining about but unfortunately, they were beyond reasoning, to the point that they left the hotel leaving an invalid credit card as settlement for their bill. Without delving into the specifics, I can confirm that the hotel bill has been settled now. My only regret is that we were unable to resolve the concerns of our guests in a more satisfactory manner.

This is a very special hotel, unlike any other place I have been before.
It is a beautiful historic building in Stresa in front of the Lake with a beautiful view on the Borromean Islands.

Our room was beautifully decorated , with a nice garden view.
It was very clean and spacious with a comfortable bed.
Maybe only the pillows were not very comfortable but it wasn’t a big deal.

The SPA was very nice. With a very enjoyable pool, sauna and Turkish bath it was perfect to relax after a day of sightseeing.

The common areas were very well kept and all the people working in the hotel were super professional and helpful.

We enjoyed dinner at the restaurant and we thought it was pretty good.
The quality of our dishes was excellent, maybe portions were a bit too small and there was not a vegetarian choice from the fixed menu we had chosen for our half board.
Breakfast was also good with great quality products, also here maybe we could have enjoyed more choices of cakes and sweet things.

It was a special weekend and I think this hotel totally deserves the five starts.
Would love to come back again and I think we will soon!
