Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The location is unrivalled but the amenities and rooms are quite dated. Understanding it was off-season, the breakfast patio was closed so only 8 seats are available in the main floor dining area. Breakfast offerings were basic but service was excellent all around. Noise is an issue with the sound coming up from the alleys below as late revellers stumble home. Floors above transmit sound and there is a constant rumble of door slams and heavy feet. It's an old building with lots of charm but not the most comfortable stay. The rooms are very outdated and the shower stall incredibly small. Having said all that the price was right and I would probably stay again.

We have previously stayed at this hotel during our prior visits to Rome and would not change this place for any other one. My wife and I have always been extremely pleased with everything at Hotel San Carlo: awesome location, great comfort, extreme cleanliness, very good breakfast, and outstanding Staff. We would like to deeply thank Victoria, Rosanna and all the other employees on the premises (specially those at the breakfast room who go out of their way to give the greatest service to all guests). Of course this will be our chosen hotel one more time when we go back to the Unique City of Rome! Our most sincere gratitude and we will continue to recommend you to all our relatives and friends!!!

This was our second stay at this small but great hotel. The staff is wonderful. The rooms are spacious for European hotels and very clean. The bathrooms are updated and modern. The location couldn’t be better for a first timer or repeat visitor to this wonderful city. If we return to Rome we will stay here.

Excellent hotel. Excellent location near the Spanish Steps and Spagne Metro stop. Perfect for exploring Rome. Walking distance, we love to walk, to all parts of the city. Enjoyed our time and would definitely stay here again.

Great location near Piazza di Spagna. Helpful staff. Very nice breakfast on the terrace. Bathroom tiny and dated but functional. Might be a poor choice for someone with mobility problems...only a single person elevator and 4 floors.

We had the most wonderful experience during our five days at the Hotel San Carlo! The rooms are quite spacious and the bathroom is superb. We had great water pressure even though we were located on the top floor. The hotel is located just 2 blocks away from the Spanish Steps and the metro. When you walk out of the hotel, you are in the heart of Rome! The real key to this lovely hotel is the personnel. They are pleasant and extremely helpful, from assisting with transportation, restaurant recommendations, and even locating a laundromat! The hotel has an elevator, although small, but it worked great every time. We will definitely be back!

This is the second time I have stayed at this hotel. I first stayed there four years ago. After my last stay, I will stay there again. Even though I was travelling alone, I booked a deluxe double room. I think it is worth the space to get a good sized room. The front door staff were helpful and friendly. I was impressed that they showed me to the front door of the hotel when my taxi arrived for the airport. One small issue was the breakfast was on the modest size compared to what I was served in the other four hotels on my trip. The staff were very nice though. And of course, I had a nice large meal later that day for supper so it was no big issue for me. It's located on a narrow street with an excellent restaurant (Toto) facing it. I was able to walk everywhere I wanted to go. There are many excellent restaurants nearby.

This hotel was in a fantastic location in Rome. We felt very safe and were able to get to many sites and shopping without issue. The rooms were not large and some bathrooms were quite cramped, but the attached outside patio for breakfast made you smile. The front desk personnel were helpful but not overly friendly.. maybe they were having a bad day.

We were very pleased with the San Carlo. We had to extend our trip one day and they were very kind with helping us do that here. A nice breakfast in a secluded upper location adds class. We had a covered terrace attached to our upper floor room that added a special touch, too, even though we hadn't asked for or expected it. They also arranged a very early morning ride to the airport which was much appreciated. Definitely great customer service. We'd recommend it without question. Close to Spanish Steps, Trevi, Pantheon, and an easy walk to Borghese, so a great location as well. Shopping surrounds this Hotel.
