During our time in Rome we stayed in the Hotel Lancelot. In addition to being a Rick Steves pick for best hotels, it was also available through Priceline which allowed us to book a package deal including airfare and hotel. The rooms were immaculate and beautifully appointed. The staff was gracious, helpful, and offered wonderful recommendations on local restaurants and points of interest.

Breakfast

Breakfast was offered as part of the accommodations and provided many wonderful options including hot hard boiled eggs in the shell. This might sound like a weird insight to point out, but there was no question as to the freshness and I found them particularly enjoyable. Other items included a variety of croissants, fruit, cereals, pastries, deli meats, cheeses, and juices, all fresh and well displayed. Coffee and tea’s were also available.

Location

It is located in a residential area of Rome a few blocks from the Colosseum. The area contains many excellent restaurants within walking distance that are less touristy and cater to a more local clientele. Don’t be afraid to venture away from the restaurant’s geared to the English speaking tourist. These typically have pictures of food posted outside the storefront and employees outside trying to pull you into the shop. When traveling, I like to follow the advice St Ambrose gave St Augustine in the 4th century AD. When in Rome, do as the Romans do. We have applied this philosophy to all of our travels and found the road less traveled by, has made all the difference.

Do take the time to learn the pleasantries in the native language of the place you are visiting. Although many speak English, it is polite to initiate a conversation in their native language. Apply the golden rule as you travel, and you may find a whole new world will open to you.

Arrivederci, Benedizioni

-Peter

The front desk is incredible, no matter what time of day or who you speak to they are all outstanding. My wife arrived later than I and the taxi driver was trying to take advantage, she asked the front desk for help (don't remember her name) and she jumped in and straitened everything out. The rooms were really nice, the location (2 blocks from the Colosseum) is great.

I think this is our fifth stay at the Lancelot in Rome and it will not be our last! Returning to this gem of a hotel is like coming home where they remember you and welcome you like family. It is perfectly located near the Colosseum and easy walking distance from pretty much everything that you want to visit in this glorious city. It is not a large hotel but it has a grand feel to it, tastefully decorated and charming at the same time. We have stayed in many different rooms on our stays and they are always absolutely spotless and comfortable. The bar is open all the time and they make the best Aperol Spritz ever! You must eat dinner there, they have large tables meant for sharing and meeting your fellow travellers from around the world. We have had the pleasure of meeting fascinatingly interesting people whilst dining on sumptuous meals prepared under the watchful eye of Chef Faris who may join you for dinner if you are lucky. The wine is free flowing and often we are treated to an aperitif or digestif as a lovely surprise. The desserts are always delicious. Breakfast is served as buffet with many lovely offerings from cereals, fruit, savoury meats, eggs, a large variety of baked goods, jams, cheeses, etc. etc. You will have a healthy and filling start to your busy day in Rome.
All of the staff are friendly, fluent in many languages and go out of their way to be helpful. If you are very lucky, you may be blessed to have a chance to meet Mrs. Kahn who moved from Canada and opened this hotel many years ago. She and her family are delightful and infinitely interesting people who have created this haven in Rome.

We arranged our reasonably priced transportation from the airport through the hotel. Because we arrived very early on a Sunday morning, our room was not ready, but the staff invited us to have breakfast and stowed our luggage while we recuperated from our flight in a cozy sitting area. Around 2 p.m. (the couple before us stayed over by two hours because they didn't want to leave!), we were shown to our Sixth Floor terrace room. The room was comfortable and clean, but the terrace was amazing! It was spacious with a wrought-iron table and chairs and surrounded by rose bushes and other blooming flowers! The vista in all directions was mesmerizing. The hotel is only 500 yards from the Colosseum, but beyond that are other prominent sites including the dome of St. Peter's. Another basilica sits atop the tree-forested hill to the north. The staff recommended a restaurant around the corner, Il Bocconcino, for an early dinner, and we enjoyed Roman specialties there.
The next day, I awoke to sit on the terrace and at 7 a.m., I was treated to the belos of the churches ringing the hour from all over the city. Even during rush hour, traffic noise was never intrusive. We toured the city for the most part of the day by golf cart via Turtle Tours, and while my wife enjoyed the terrace, I toured the Colosseum. That evening, we enjoyed a delicious four course dinner at the Lancelot with our fellow guests at the incredible reasonable price of 25 euros including wine and aperitifs. The next morning, we had to leave for our cruise and the staff directed my just down the street to a charming wine shop and arranged our car to the rendezvous with our cruise transportation. The Khan family obviously love what they do and live on site. The staff speaks English and several other languages. The Lancelot is an excellent alternative to big commercial hotels in the tourist districts.

We spent a week at the Lancelot and absolutely loved it. I had been trying to get to this hotel for 3 years, changing my reservation every time it appeared we could travel with Covid. Finally made it and couldn't have had a better experience from start to finish. Chiara and Francesca are the best. They arranged a pickup at Rome airport to take us directly to the hotel, so I didn't have to search all the options. My room was a single with a wonderful small balcony where I could enjoy a cappuccino in the morning. The hotel is located two blocks from the Colosseum, Forum and the Metro station, which we used frequently, and 3 blocks from Circo Massimo, so an easy walk. There are wonderful restaurants and gelato shops nearby and a convenient pharmacy and two small grocery stores as well, both of which had gluten free options. The hotel has a 24-hour bar, where we would enjoy a glass of wine each evening, and the availability of a cappuccino if needed before breakfast at 7. The breakfast each morning has a wide variety of options, with cold cereal, meats and cheeses, breads and gluten free bread if needed. In the evening they serve dinner family style if you like, with a wonderful 3 course meal including wine and dessert. Mr. Kahn is a fantastic chef and we really enjoyed the food he prepared, again having a gluten free option possible as long as they are notified in advance. From the hotel we did several train trips on Italo to Florence and Venice, but returned each evening to the hotel, as we didn't want to handle luggage on the train and around the very rough streets of those cities. The laundry staff is fantastic, prices very reasonable and laundry was always returned promptly. Chiara also arranged our transport to Civitavecchia for our cruise on our last day, which helped, as only certain vehicles can actually drive on the pier to the cruise ships. I look forward to returning to Rome to see everything I missed and especially staying here again.

We always stay at the Lancelot when returning to visit Rome.

The rooms are spotless and comfortable making you feel at ease with the comforts of home. The staff are all friendly and helpful in whatever you need, whether that be advice on what's happening in Rome, sights to see, that bus ticket you need or just a cup of tea to warm you up.
Lancelot is located a short distance from many important sights in Rome.

We highly recommend a stay at Lancelot, whether for your business or pleasure.

I cannot say enough good things about this very lovely, peaceful, restorative place. Comfortable rooms, comfortable beds and exquisite, over the top service from all of the staff.

We especially want to thank Francesca, who graciously dealt with all of my panicky emails from NYC and while en route to Rome. Our cruise line kept changing our departure, we kept needing to change plans, but Francesca coped with it all with style and grace. She is as lovely and capable in person as she was on line.

Both Francesca and Michael at the desk gave us great service, directions, suggestions! Michael solved our electrical problems with a surge protector when ours blew. They also found us a spectacularly wonderful driver who picked us up at FCO and the returned to shuttle us to Civitavecchia for a fair price.

Breakfast is a wonderful buffet of smoked meats and fish, cheeses, breads and croissants, cereals, yogurts, fruits and juices. The coffee is excellent and ca]guccione and espresso are happily served. There is even Prosecco on Sunday to add to your juice.

The bar is available all the time and drinks are very reasonably priced. Metro tickets and stamps are sold for cost at the desk.

The staff and owners go above and beyond to create a restful and happy home away from home. We will return here for many years to come.

Spotless rooms in a cozy hotel very near the Colosseum. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel welcome and at home. While the hotel is lovely, it is truly the staff that make the place exceptional. Faris offered several tips for great walks and places to visit and helped us find our way around. We felt very safe walking in the neighborhood and had no concerns with COVID while staying. It felt like we were staying with family who would ask about our day each morning and evening.

Instead of the usual breakfast buffet, we filled out a small form each evening and our breakfast order was provided on a tray. Two mornings we had a very early start and the offered to provide breakfast before hours which was appreciated. The breakfast was traditional Italian (meats, pastries, toast, yogurt) but filling. Tables were separated to allow spacing for COVID.

We decided to stay here based on the recommendation of Rick Steves and it was the best decision we made. We would definitely stay here again. The staff helped us book our return COVID test and arranged private airport pickups for about the same price as the train/taxi. The coliseum metro stop was about an 8 - 10 minute easy walk.

Very clean, secure hotel within walking distance of the Colosseum, restaurants, metro, shops and gelato. Nice European style breakfast in the morning (included). Hotel has a bar, and we enjoyed a glass of wine in the courtyard or up on the 6th floor terrace (from which you can see the Colosseum.) Rooms have A/C. The private bathroom in our room was small, as was the shower, but is typical of European hotels. Very nice bath towels are provided as is blow dryer, shampoo and shower gel.
Michael and other staff are very friendly and helpful. They are more than happy to recommend dining options, call cabs, etc. We will definitely stay there again.

Really terrific hotel. Would definitely stay there again. Very close to the Colosseum and metro station. Staff was extremely helpful and pleasant. Cannot say enough nice things about them. Breakfasts were outstanding and the optional dinner (we only had one) was generous, very tasty and reasonably priced. When we made our reservations, the only available room was the Assessible Room which is located in the annex. While it was of a good size and adequate accommodations, after seeing a room in the main building, we wished we could have stayed there.

I don’t know with regards to the train, however, the hotel provides ( for a reasonable cost) a transfer from the airport. They may be able to accommodate you if you contact them directly?

We had a room on the 4th floor. I’m not sure if it was classed as a larger room; but we had a walk in shower. The bar is downstairs. No drinks are served on the terrace but you can take your drinks to the terrace.

Hi. Is this a safe area at night. If I'm out late enjoying Rome will I feel safe walking back to the hotel?
Answer from hyker1

Actually, I have been all over Rome late in the evening, and have been fine... and I'm a woman. But Hotel Lancelot is actually in what is considered to be a more residential area... where a lot of Italians live and work. So, it's in a lovely location. There are some great landmarks around too to help navigate you back. It's located within sight of the Colosseum and there's a huge old Abby behind it. The rotunda of the Abbey is visible on the street where the hotel is, so it helped me orient myself until I got used to where I was going. You'll be plenty safe there!
