The Grand Hotel Royal garners praise for its sumptuous atmosphere and meticulously kept amenities, such as the well-maintained pool and private beach access. Nestled in a prime location, guests enjoy easy access to attractions coupled with serene sea views.
While the spacious rooms offer comfort and are celebrated for their cleanliness, some guests suggest they could benefit from modern updates. The service at the hotel is consistently lauded for its attentiveness, although opinions on value are mixed due to the premium pricing and some dated aspects of the property.

For 5 nights, my family and I were warmly greeted, pampered, and well cared for by the staff of the Grand Royal Hotel! Not only is the location within walking distance of any place you would want to go - the rooms, lobby, terraces, pool and sea deck are beautiful and sumptuious.
Personal service exceeded all expectations and it is really the star of this hotel. My gratitude extends to Giustina, Paolo, Mauro who assisted us with dinner reservations, boat rentals and so much more, even before we arrived at the hotel. Their attention to detail and concern for our comfort was generously given to us throughout our stay.
Our thanks to Salvatore, who provided us wonderful service at the pool and ensured we had everything we needed. The pool is beautiful, large and with many chaise chairs and umbrellas.
Of course all the attentive and kind servers at breakfast and dinner who made each meal so very special. No surprise the food was delicious at every meal.

The location is great—close enough to walk to the city center but separated enough to be quiet at night. Felt safe walking home at night after dinner.
The amenities are very nice. The “beach” is actually a dock that you can access via an elevator. There are steps down into the water for swimming and you can order drinks while you lounge. Domenico is the main attendant and he is wonderful—very attentive and accommodating!
Up on the cliffside the pool is also nice. Interestingly, the “hot tub” is not actually hot, it is the same temperature as the pool but there are jacuzzi jets. This is likely a common practice in Italy as the same was true in the other hotels we stayed in. Lorenza at the pool is amazing—she gave us a bunch of great restaurant recommendations for good food reasonably priced, and she even called ahead and told them it was our anniversary, ensuring that we were taken care of.
The gym is serviceable, one treadmill, a couple other machines and some free weights.
We thought the restaurant was good for lunch (you can’t beat the view) but for dinner you can find a better meal in town if you do some looking. The breakfast spread is quite good with fresh fruit, typical European breakfast items and an omelette bar.
The staff can make or break a hotel experience and both Domenico and Lorenza made our experience so great. In addition to providing wonderful service, they were great to talk to and welcomed us to Italy with warmth and kindness! We look forward to returning and seeing them again.

Where to begin! This is a hotel which oozes style and service. You won’t regret investing in your stay here.
Grounds - lots of spaces to sit and enjoy the views. Including the terrace and jetty. All maintained daily.
Facilities- pool area is well maintained and being off peak it was an enjoyable experience to have the pool to myself! The seaside terrace offers further pleasant spaces to relax. The steps into the sea were a little wobbly and algae covered- to be expected in the sea!
Room - spacious and well decorated, bathroom very nice. Housekeeping are very attentive, visiting several times a day. Chocolate at turn down is a special touch.
Food - breakfast offers a range of options, including fresh fruit, cheeses, pastries, chef station for freshly cooked eggs! We also dined at the Al la Carte restaurant one evening, superb food and well on its journey to a Michelin star! We were highly impressed by the food, the quality ingredients, and service.
Location - perfect! A short walk to the centre of Sorrento but set aside to enable a relaxing atmosphere. Some of the other 5 star hotels are a longer distance and would require taxis so this is a really well placed location base.
Service- we attended Sorrento to be married at The Cloister, the hotel made sure every detail was special. A hand written card to welcome our arrival was a sign of the experience ahead. Staff were friendly and helpful. Clearly highly trained in hospitality services, a level of traditional service you don’t often see. We didn’t mention that it was my birthday but the hotel noticed on my passport, a further hand written card with small pastry was delivered to the room on a silver platter.
Overall we felt this hotel was on another level! Highly recommended.

A five star just for the rates. Wonderful location overlooking beautiful...Great breakfast....But...the facilities leave something to be desired: Umbrellas for very few and deckchairs not for all ....😳 ( who first arrives stays ) type residence , even with embarrassment and difficulty of the staff , both in the pool and on the platforms at the sea ... (on the platforms in the morning at 9.30 there were 6 people present and 12 umbrellas occupied , despite the prohibition to occupy chairs and umbrellas without presence ... extra foraging ? ) Common places not really kept with the utmost care, not by (5*) cocktail bar also open to the outside with the same spaces / terrace as hotel guests... rooms with good cleanliness , but not by (5*) ...attentive and willing staff but not all unfortunately motivated ...furnishing rooms , reception and old-fashioned lobbies ... not old ... to be renovated ... lacks the necessary attention to detail that is proper to the 5* A good and dignified 4 stars ... quality / price ratio not appropriate. 5* hotels are quite different ... this is just a starting point for reflection for both the property and the user ...

I was warned that Italian comfort and plumbing would be lacking, but this hotel was very luxurious. I got to stay in both a city view standard room and a luxury suite. Both had excellent plumbing, luxurious bedding, and all the comforts we needed. Fresh bottled water was delivered daily. The balconies and waterfront offered stunning views and excellent swimming. The breakfast buffet was filled with fruits, pastries, an omelet station, and more. Front desk staff were always kind and helpful- thanks Mauro! This hotel was off the main square, but a very short walk away. The city view overlooks a citrus orchard, among other things. Next time, ocean view for me.

We stayed here about five years ago when it was a great hotel. Regrettably it’s not deserving of the five stars rating it has. It’s had a lick of paint over the last five years but I would guess that the harsh economic climate has meant a change in management at the top or a change in their business model. We stayed a fortnight in which time it became apparent that hotel guests were not the primary source of profit. There were seven weddings, taking up most of the terrace so that where we liked to sit was not available to us. We had to listen to loud music, lots of shouting, on one occasion fireworks at 23:30. But the real insult was that on the morning of the wedding they washed the terrace, but the day after the wedding they didn’t. They obviously thought the hotel guests were dirty!
On arrival we were told that evening dining was at the terrace restaurant so booked a table. We hadn’t used this restaurant last time as the hotel’s main restaurant was very good. The two head waiters spent most of their time looking at their technology. The food arrived cold, and we saw from our room that the food came from the hotel’s kitchen through the garden with nothing covering it. Only when we walked out did a head water ask what was wrong!
When we arrived we realised that the bathroom was tired. The shaving mirror was loose, the shower head was clogged and didn’t work well, both faults sorted when we complained, then the bathroom door started squeaking and then the washbasin tap.. it was clear that though the chamber maids did a great job no one in seniority spent any time in the room.
Breakfast was great!! Though the heating level on the hot food storers could have been raised a bit!
But the staff were top notch! Helpful, caring and quick to find solutions.
It’s just the lack of detailed management that is so obvious. Guests and staff deserve better

I honestly cannot think of one negative thing to say about this hotel. We drove here from Maiori along the Amalfi coast. When we arrived we walked into a sparkling lobby that smelled like lemons. The service is impeccable. You take an elevator down to get to the beach via a hundred year old tunnel. The water is very accessible and the towels are soft and fluffy. The breakfast spread is not to be believed with everything from omelettes to pastries. We were a ten minute walk to everything we wanted to see and do. If it’s within your budget, you shouldn’t hesitate to stay here.

Such a beautiful, clean hotel. This was our treat having been together for 15 years, and it was so worth it. The room was beautiful and spacious with a huge terrace balcony where you could walk around for an amazing view of the coast. The bed was incredibly comfortable, and the breakfast was so easy. I have lots of intolerances, the main one being gluten, but there was something I could eat everyday. The staff were always smiling and helpful, and the rooms cleaned everyday with chocolates left on our pillows. Everything about this hotel was perfect, but mainly it is worth every penny for that view. It's an easy walk into central Sorrento, but far enough out that you don't get much noise.

The Grand Royal is an excellent hotel and has a wonderful situation directly overlooking Sorrento Harbour, the sea, the Bay of Naples and Vesuvius beyond. We have stayed around six times in the hotel over the past 25 years or so but never so late as October. My wife and I really enjoy swimming daily but the pool was very cold and unheated and we were unable to enjoy our holiday as in previous years. We always remembered the lovely pool being quite warm and assumed it was heated but definitely not this time. We visited a nearby hotel for lunch and their pool was heated to 28 degrees whereas the Royal was only around 20/21 degrees and far too cold to enjoy. The pool was hardly used during our time there and I spoke to other poolside guests who were equally disappointed. Like me, they said they had complained as indeed I did several times but nothing was done. When you are paying around 900 euros a night is it asking too much to expect to be able to enjoy a swim in the pool? Will we return, well hopefully, but certainly not later in the year unless they review their pool heating policy.

We booked this due to its location in Sorrento and that it was 5 star and felt it looked beautiful. Based on that criteria it's exactly that. But we found it lacking compared to a 4 star we stayed in earlier this year in Tenerife. Mostly the staff was pleasant but only a few seemed genuinely warm and welcoming. On arrival reception seemed off it, we noted several guests arrive and had a short tour around, we didn't get offered that, and later on when we sat outside for drinks, was told it was the wrong area by staff, which wouldn't of been a problem had we known previously. We had issues with maid service in our room, yes it cleaned daily and bedding changed, but we had to call reception for toilet rolls and face flannel to be given.
The selection of food for breakfast was the usual, cold meats, fruits n cheeses, some hot items and lots of cake selections and cereal. Which was ok enough but felt more hot food choice would be nice, again compared to 4 star we felt it lacking.
On our 7th and final day we was promised an early breakfast selection to take with us due to early flights, on arrival at reception this wasn't the case and we left empty stomachs and underwhelmed by the experience from staff again.
So hence the low score, I wouldn't rate this a 5 star hotel, a 4 at a stretch compared to others we've stayed at.
