Royal Hospital, late 15th century pilgrim¿s hostelCombining history, art and tradition, the goal of pilgrims and the emblem of St. James, the Hostal dos Reis Católicos, in the Plaza do Obradoiro, forms together with the cathedral one of the world’s most remarkable, and most visited, urban settings. The Hostal, which first saw life as a Royal Hospital in 1499 to house the many pilgrims arriving in Santiago, today still invites the traveller to enjoy this universal and fascinating city. Considered the oldest hotel in the world, it is also one of the most luxurious and beautiful. It has four extremely beautiful cloisters, elegant public rooms, spectacular bedrooms and a luxurious dining room offering Galician style fish and meats and the classic apple filloa pies and crème brulee.

The hotel is situated beside the cathederal in the heart of Compestela.. The staff are kind, interested and always provide exceptional and efficient service.. We first stay there ten years ago and returned almost every year since. An experience to be relished!

Outstanding services, location and history. We enjoyed the facilities, as well as the two dinners we had in each of the restaurants. We upgraded to the Cardenal Suite, which was a real wonderful treat!

We stayed here after our last day on the camino and it was such a nice treat. The hotel facilities / grounds are gorgeous and the buffet breakfast was amazing! The rooms are not cookie-cutter and you get the feeling that each room has its own unique style and finishings. The only thing that I can think that this hotel is missing is a spa. I inquired about a massage which would have been been fantastic after 15 days on the camino. The hotel was also gracious enough to hold our backpacks while we explored Santiago on the day we arrived and the day we were leaving. I highly recommend.

It is admittedly expensive but we had a marvellous room (superbly furnished, spacious and just off one off one of the cloisters) and the freedom to wander around the whole building was a tremendous bonus.

We stayed two nights in this parador while visiting Santiago. It’s a large hotel - our room was a 5 minute walk from the front desk. But the room was very large and comfortable, with plenty of storage space. The bed was comfortable and there were 2 pillows each. The bath had a tub and very large shower. The amenities were nice. The building is very old so the floors creak when you walk, but the hotel itself seemed quiet enough. The staff was friendly and helpful. If you’re driving, you drive into the restricted cathedral square & the staff valet parks. The hotel has two restaurants. We had an excellent dinner in the more formal of the two. There is an excellent spread in the breakfast room, with a wide range of items available both from self-serve tables and from the attentive staff. Because of the number of guests, even though the breakfast room is large you have to reserve a particular hour for breakfast. As the parador fronts the cathedral square, there is no better spot to be in Santiago!
