Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The location was an easy walk from the train station and just a half block from the Porta Nigra and the old town section of Trier. The room was clean and fresh. Breakfast was excellent. The woman who managed the breakfast room was friendly and efficient and there was a variety of food offered. The breakfast room was attractive and pleasant. The only significant negative: During our stay the elevator was not available. Some visitors might be disturbed because there was not a 24-hour desk clerk but we were given a key to enter the building.

Great location, just a few steps from the Porta Negra. We decided on this hotel on the strength of the previous great reviews. Our expectations therefore were quite high and our experience didn’t match. It was an okay stay but fairly ordinary. We booked on the hotel’s website. You can’t pay online so a reservation was sent and I smartly received a confirmation email and a phone call a few minutes later. The check in process was fast. The room was a decent size, was tidy and clean, and had everything but looked a bit dated, from the 1980s. The worst bit was the smell emanating from the bathroom, like old drains. There’s no one on reception in the evenings to report it to and luckily by morning the smell had gone. We did mention it on the way out though. Our room was very quiet and we slept well. We had no view of the Porta Negra (we hadn’t expected one but there are apparently rooms which do have a side view). The WiFi is dreadful: we finally gave up on it. I managed to get a connection after trying many times but the signal was so weak that I couldn’t use it. We didn’t go for breakfast (an extra €12.50 each) nor for the parking (an extra €10. We’ve stayed at other hotels in Trier in the past which have been better so are unlikely to go back to this hotel.

Response from HPTrier, Manager at Paulin Hotel Trier
Responded 18 Jul 2019
Was ist daran Enttäuschend?

The staff were extremely friendly. The room was what I paid for. It is really close to Old town and a lot of the sites. There is also a budget supermarket downstairs and next door where you can buy inexpensive snacks and drinks. There was construction going on a crossed the street. But I was usually up and gone before they started and back after they stopped. Late sleepers may have a issue with this. The breakfast was better than average. I would stay here again.

nothing spectacular to this hotel. Well priced and very close to both centre and train station. Rooms are ok, nothing exceptional. The decor is doubtful but ok for a night. Service was welcoming and friendly.

While the staff were friendly and the location very handy (about 100m away) to the Porta Nigra and other highlights of Trier, the hotel to us was average. Breakfasts were very good and had a wide range of options and set you up well for the days exploring ahead. Whilst the room was clean, we did find it on the warm side and opening the window resulted in street noise. There is a supermarket next door which was rather handy for supplies. All in all, an average hotel, nothing special but not bad either.

We loved the Hotel Paulin from the cheerful check-in to the easy check-out. Our room looked identical to the one featured in the photo shown here. After arriving in Trier following a week on the river in a tiny boat cabin, our "comfort room" felt like a palace. Plus, our intended hotel (Casa Chiara) had turned us away because they claimed I had not completed their reservation process (see my review) so we were without lodging upon arrival--the traveler's nightmare. The tourist office at Porta Nigra (excellent service there) located the room at the Paulin for us. It should be noted that the Paulin beds with real goosedown pillows were wonderful, but on the day we checked out, brand new mattresses were lined up in the hallway awaiting placement! Breakfast is optional for 8 Euros (I think). Highly recommend this place.

Our room was very clean and large, including the attached, private bath. Great location for walking to any of the tourists sites in Trier. Excellent service checking in and out and no issues with language as the staff speaks both German and English. There is a secure, onsite parking garage, but there is limited availability to you car after certain hours.

I have been to Trier at the high season in the middle of August and was looking for a decent and reasonably priced hotel somewhere very close to the Trier´s historical center. Finally I booked for Hotel Paulin for one night, single room. I came in the late afternoon and was led to hotel´s parking lot, which is in the hotel courtyard. I got a great room for very reasonable price for that time period and went outside for walk. It is just 200 metres from the Porta Negra roman gate and short walk from the Trier Cathedral. Overall the hotel was great, perfectly located, all ammenities needed were available, great breakfast and attentive personnel. When you approach the hotel for the first time and see the outside you would not expect such a great hotel, but my experience and surprise with that was great. Will come back on my next visit.

After a couple of days in Munich in October we realised that hotel rooms would be hard to find before getting back to France. We checked our usual chain hotel and fell back to this one. Really, we fell forward ! Better value, nice hosts, comfortable and fantastic breakfast ! Parking is very reasonable too.
