Germans have a weird obsession with all things Italian. This explains why despite excellent local wines , both red and white, think Sekt Kessler, excellent Spätburgenders, Germans persist in drinking a nasty chemical tasting orange botanical liqueur called Aperol Spritz, an anaemic and unpleasant mixture of aperol, prosecco and soda. Disclaimer, the author is clearly in the Spanish vermut camp. The Italian obsession has also translated into a group of chain hotels - Medici named. For context the Medicis were a powerful banking and political dynasty from Tuscany from the 15 to 18th century. Despite Germany´s unnatural obsession with Aperol and Campari, the room did not have a mini-bar stocking these drinks or anything else beyond water. For those who prefer to work, there were no USB A or C plugs in the room to assist with charging. The LED lighting was unpleasant, both ghostly and eerie (see pictures). Most of the centre of the room was taken up a large rotating TV. Question from the author - who watches hotel TV anymore? TV channel selection in most hotels these days runs from ad-addled news channels, local news, Al-Jazeera and Russia Today. The ads also seem uniformly tailored to business travelling pushing out investment opportunities in far-off countries, “where the past becomes the future and the future becomes the present and where the opportunities are unlimitless. “ Heaven forbid you actually get a free football (soccer) channel. Everyone in our family has an ipad or laptop, with VPN, so not sure when a hotel TV would be used especially as they usually have sound. I would preferred that any space saved was put towards desk space and proper chargers. The hotel has clearly focused on grand entrances and hallways large enough to have fights in medieval armour in, huge naked statues in lift shafts but has forgotten about one key point - guests place value on the the size of the rooms and nice views, a feature which every member of our party complained about (especially given the price we paid for the rooms). The shower room, on the small side was actually a bit OTT with its shower fielding five different heads and knobs to work out. A bit of labelling on hot, cold, and water would have helped. The bar was buzzy although some of the drinks felt overpriced. The location is very central with a wide-ranging selection of fast food and restaurants so if you are still craving all things Italian, pizzerias are just around the corner en masse. The staff were extremely pleasant and helpful. One point of concern was that it was possible to access the first and upper floors without a "halt, who goes there" or the need to present a card, via the grandiose staircases. The bed room door itself did not have a dead-bolt, which for many travellers would be a deal breaker and is a huge minus-point for female colleagues. In short, if an Italian-themed Disneyesque building, short on security and room space is your cup of tea, you might like this. If not, it feels like times have moved on and the concept falls far short for the price.

Very nice, build in an old abbey, great fire place in the lobby, all kinds of different rooms type, courtyard arrival easy by car. Electric plug available. Located in the Old town, it is however a bit pricy. Brasserie is good too. Breakfast is excellent.

Stayed here while on a work trip. Location is pretty good, in the old town, ubahn station not far away. The hotel itself was a bit weird. It is quite big, so you can walk for miles to get to your room. But it was totally devoid of any sort of welcoming feeling. The corridors are lined with paintings of what looked like European royalty. The lights come on as you approach parts where no-one has been recently. I felt a bit like I could be in a horror movie. The room felt as if it hadn’t been updated much since the 1980s. It was (mostly) clean and in good condition, just old fashioned. My room was on the first floor, there could be quite a bit of street noise. Breakfast was ok. I stayed here as I booked my trip very last minute and most other places were already booked. I would not stay again unless there was absolutely nowhere else.

Located in the older part of town with walking access to the riverfront and lots of restaurants shops and markets. The rooms are older but clean and quaint. Almost has a museum like feel with all the art a d artifacts lining the halls. Refrigerator in room. Great showers. Nice breakfast with a large selection that can be added to the room fee. Dent fitness area with a wide selection of equipment. Spa services available.

A disappointing experience on three counts. 1. My reservation included a complimentary minibar however it contained only 2 bottles of local beer (my wife doesn't drink beer) and two bottles of water. No snacks or soft drink and juices or wines/spirits - as you would expect. When I mentioned this at reception I was told I could purchase the full minibar package at an extra cost. 2. The website promised a SAUNA and SPA however neither were open for 3 of our 5 day stay. Closed on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. This was not made clear at the point of purchase or in the reservation confirmation. If it had of been then I would not have booked. 3. I booked a DELUXE room which promised 248sq ft of floor space. I can only imagine they include the bathroom and wardrobe area in this calculation as the room was disappointingly small. Only 0.5m either side of the bed and less than 2m between the end of the bed and the furniture. No room to leave a suitcase open. See photos. The hotel is advertised as 5 stars and cost me GBP £440 per night but falls way below the advertised level of comfort and service you would expect at this rating and cost. I have made a complaint via the Booking Agency, who contacted the hotel, however they are not interested. This is a beautiful and interesting old hotel right in the centre of the old town with plenty of bars and restaurants in the area - which is a good thing as the hotel bar and restaurant doesn't open until 6pm each evening.

Dear guest, thank you very much for your review. Our hotel provides 4 complimentary drinks in the minibar for every guest. If you wish for other beverages or snacks, we have a small selection available on-site. Our sauna is currently only open at specific times, and this information is also indicated on the booking portals. Each of our hotel rooms has slight variations in size and amenities. Due to being situated in a historic building, it is not possible for us to offer standardized rooms. We apologize if the room did not meet your expectations. Our hotel is not star-certified and is not advertised as such. We regret that you were not satisfied, and based on your feedback, we will discuss and improve our services if possible. We wish you all the best!

It felt like staying the night in a museum. Even strolling through the hallways is a delight! The rooms were big enough and fully equipped. The staff was very friendly and the breakfast was well worth it. Even the location was pretty good. Would definitely recommend!

A somehow strange experience, as so ambivalent. Pros: Very beautiful building, castle-like with high ceilings. Rooms are beautiful and well equipped, including the bathroom (shower is great). Perfect location, at the edge of the famous Altstadt (old town) and very close to the river Rhein. Cons: They have clearly issues with the service personnel. We arrived very late, shortly before midnight. I wanted to call the hotel to give them a heads up, in order to avoid them giving the room away. I had to call 3 times (at around 10 pm), and to wait like 10 minutes in the line, until someone finally attended the phone. Next morning, same experience with the room service. No one cleaned the room, despite us putting the "please clean" sign at the door knob between 10 am and 1 pm. I had to ask the reception around 4 pm to please get the room serviced. The most annoying thing were the curtains. You have the fine transparent white curtain, and the heavy black-out curtain. The latter is so short, that it only covers half the window. In the moment the sun rises, it is as bright as day in the room (I am talking about room 223, in case the management is reading this). You either have an eye mask, or you are done with sleeping. Finally an advice: Despite the location, the hotel is very quiet. However, if you are in a room facing the road (most rooms don't), you will get your dose of old town-party noise, at least at the weekend.

Dear guest, Thank you for your detailed review. We are glad that you enjoyed the ambiance of our hotel, but we are sorry to hear that we were not able to impress you with our service. We appreciate your feedback and will discuss it with the relevant departments to improve our service. Regarding the blackout curtains in room 223, we would like to point out that in addition to the curtains and side drapes, there are also blinds on the windows that can be used for blackout. Unfortunately, it seems that you did not see them, which is why the short curtains were not enough to darken the room properly. Thank you for your feedback, and we hope that you will consider staying with us again in the future. Best regards,Your de Medici Team

Hotel is beautiful. Staff is very welcoming and pleasant. The rooms are small but well appointed, with good lighting, a desk & chair & large closet space. The bathroom large by European standards. Only disappointment is the glass paneled bath door - causing you to wake when anyone uses the facility during the night.

Thank you very much for your positive review. We are glad that you enjoyed your stay with us. The glass doors in the bathroom have been criticized before, and while they were part of the original design of the rooms, we will consider more discreet options for future renovations. We hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you back in the future. Best regards,

Great location, very comfortable room, valet parking, interesting works of art and canes collection from a connoisseur collector. Next time will use all possibilities as bar, breakfast room, pool, training maintenances aso. The French restaurant (more than a brasserie, since it became impossible in France to get this food quality and service) is a must.
