As much as I liked the old time grandeur of the hotel, it remains still only a three star hotel. If you come and don´t expect more than three star accomodation, you will have a good time.
My husband and I can highly recommend this hotel. We will get back soon.
Since we stay for a week or ten days we want a home not a hotel room and Vorbach provides that if you ask for it. My wife and I actually rent two of the flats on the top floor so that we mainly have it to ourselves. This time we rented all three and it was great having the whole floor. We converted the smaller studio into our work out room, we have an office, a nice kitchen and two living rooms, one with a balcony. This might be extreme but since we are both working we need our space and the very reasonable room rates make this comparable to an upscale hotel.
We do not eat the breakfast as it is not very good, although the eggs are fine. We prefer to make our own and we buy our food at Al Natura the health food store and enjoy breakfast at home.
Staying here, you have all the benefits of the campus, which is quiet, and side streets filled with small restaurants and shops. Just a few blocks and you are at the Alstersee with miles of walking along the water with green meadows and ponds filled with ducks. Adirondeck chairs are scattered around along with benches if you don't wish to sit on the lush green grass, or jog to a cafe afterwards.
Staying here you can actually walk to downtown, the pedestrian mall, and the streets filled with high end shops and yet live in a quiet leafy neighborhood.
The hotel is made up of several interconnecting town houses. They range from just a bedroom to a fully furnished two bedroom apartment with kitchen, living room and great bath tubs. We stay at number 69, which is the last building that is part of Vorbach. It still is mainly inhabited by long term locals, but the top floor is part of the hotel and more like an apartment house than a hotel. One caveat: the small elevator only goes up to the floor below the top, so it does take walking up the last flight of stairs. For check in or check out the women who run the hotel are happy to help carry the luggage.
was the location and having a kitchen (so that we could do some of our own cooking) that were important to us.
We were very pleased with the Hotel Vorbach. It is located in a nice area; there are quite a few consulates along Rothenbaumchaussee, and the university is nearby. There are numerous restaurants and coffee shops within a short walk. The hotel is about five minute's walk from the Dammtor train station (which we wished we had known before arrival; we walked from the central station, two S-bahn stops further
away from the Dammtor station), or about ten or fifteen minutes' from
the old town area. We especially liked walking through the Colonnaden, with all its shops and cafés, to get to the Aldstadt.
The hotel occupies several adjacent older buildings about four or five storeys high, and is nicely modernized but still feels old and charming. I never saw any of the standard rooms, but can describe our suite. It had a large bedroom/sitting room with a king-size bed, a small kitchen, a large entry/hall and a walk-in closet with a safe,
as well as a large-ish, nicely finished bathroom that had both a bathtub with shower, and a shower enclosure. The hotel must get a lot
of business travellers - the bedroom/sitting room had a large desk/work area, complete with a fax machine. The kitchen was well-equipped, with small stovetop and oven, microwave, fridge, cookware, dishes and cutlery etc. A small table and chairs provided a place to sit.
The kitchen even had a clothes washing machine. There was no dryer, but there were drying racks provided. We appreciated having the washer as we were able to leave Hamburg and start on with the rest of our holiday with clean clothes, but we didn't realize then what a bonus that was! We soon did though, as one of the few "difficulties" we had for the remainder of our trip was finding laundry facilities.
There was a small balcony off the bedroom, overlooking the treed courtyard. The ceilings were easily twelve feet high, and everything was nicely finished and decorated, so although it is not "fancy", it feels old and spacious. There were numerous windows that opened for fresh air, and lots of radiators for heat, which we did not need. We did notice a faint musty smell in the hallway upon entering one day, but never noticed it again; we put it down to just one of those things that comes with being in an old building in a damp climate.
The building was quiet - we rarely heard any sound from other occupants (unlike Canadian hotels, in which you can often hear your neighbour's TV, and water running in the shower etc.) and with our windows opening into the courtyard, we did not hear a lot of city noise. We found the bed very comfortable; the linens were good quality and we loved the down duvets.
The staff were friendly and helpful, and most of them speak some English, which was a good thing as our German is limited to "guten morgen" and such. Housekeeping was quick (our room was done most mornings while we were at breakfast) and generally thorough. One day, they forgot to replenish the toilet paper so I called the front desk. Within a couple of minutes, there was a knock at our door and we were handed a bag (how discreet!) with five rolls inside. (I'm not
sure why they brought us so much - do North Americans have a reputation for excessive use of T.P.? We used less than two rolls in our entire six night stay.)
The nightly rate includes breakfast in the upstairs breakfast room. There was lots to choose from, and it was a pleasant, calm spot to begin the day - sunny and bright, with pastel mint-green decor and glossy painted woodwork. Buffet-style, there was an array of cheeses and sliced meats; various breads, croissants etc.; cereals/muesli; yogurt, quark, milk; fruit cocktail and various fresh whole fruits; juices, coffee, tea ... and the server brought us a (very) soft-boiled egg each day (apparently standard for breakfast in Germany; we were offered an egg for breakfast everywhere we stayed... I like eggs, and don't mind a runny yolk, but prefer the whites to be solid ... most were a little too runny for my taste).
We did eat our other meals in for much of our stay. There is a little
convenience/grocery store at one end of the building (the far end from Rothenbaumchaussee; there is also a bank and ATM in the building, on the corner facing Rothenbaumchaussee) and a full grocery
store about ten or fifteen minutes' walk away. The Dammtor bahnhof also has some shops - including a meat & cheese shop, a bakery, and a take-out place (good rotisserie chicken!), although these were more expensive.
At about 125 euros per night, our suite at the Hotel Vorbach was a bit of an indulgence for us. The only "deficiencies" - and this is probably more a reflection of us not having been to Europe before and comparing to Canadian & American accommodations - is that we would have expected a room at this price to have a larger TV, bathrobes, and internet access. But as we travelled more through Germany and Austria, we found that at all of the places we stayed, the TVs were small (and CNN was invariably the only English channel), none provided bathrobes, and in-room internet access is not something that seems to have really caught on over there, at least not in the middle-of-the-road price range we were looking for.
We certainly recommend the Hotel Vorbach, and would stay there again if we ever return to Hamburg.
