Detailed Reviews
An excellent place. Great decor (a matter of taste of course, but it is a style we like, so we enjoyed it) and an attention to detail that I wish other, even higher class, hotels would have. Let me start by ranting a little: I always have an issue with clothes hangers in hotel closets. They are usually dreadful, even in very good hotels. Here, finally, I found a hotel with solid, wide-shoulder hangers suitable to hang suits or just to hang whatever you have without getting it wrinkled or marked in the shoulder due to the thin hanger (and you can consider yourself lucky if it is wooden since in most cases they are just dire plastic). I would already give this hotel 5 stars for providing real good quality hangers. Another detail that I never find in hotels but which this one provided is a hook in the wall to just hang coats when entering the room. I think it is the first time I see this, but definitely not the first time I have missed it. I want to be able to just casually hang my coat when I arrive to the room, and not having to put it in the closet (with a dreadful hanger) or drop it on a chair. Another detail I appreciated immensely and for which I would give the hotel 5 stars alone.
We had a deluxe room facing the canal. The room was beautiful, clean and quiet. The bed was extremely comfortable so we had a good rest and sleep after walking in Hamburg for hours each day. The bluetooth speaker was a plus to play our own playlists from the mobile. We did not have breakfast, neither used the spa or other hotel facilities, so I can not review that. But this hotel provided a pleasant place to come "home" in the evenings and a good rest when needed. All in a beautiful environment with attention to detail and with quality materials. We did not have the need to interact much with the staff, just on checking in and out, which was unproblematic. They were polite and pleasant. I should add that I think the photos in the hotel website reflect perfectly the real thing. We will definitely be back if we return to Hamburg.
Location: this is quite a personal issue since it depends where one needs or wants to be. But it is close to the old harbour area and to the town hall square. You can easily get to the hotel by the S-bahn from the airport at least if you just have hand luggage (line S1 to Stadthausbrucke, and then walk 700 meters according to Google).
One thing though: if you are the type that gets nuts by tilted hanging paintings, even if slightly, you will have a hard time. There were about ten paintings in the room and I am not sure there was even one that was hanging straight. And they are fixed to the wall, so you can not correct the skewness. Note to management: maybe someone with a level can take the herculean task of correcting this in all the rooms? I am sure there will be people who will immensely appreciate it. I just noticed it but it did not bother me to the point of disturbing me (just to the point of trying to, unsuccessfully, correct it)

This place is perfection. We spent a weekend in Hamburg in December and couldn't have been more satisfied with our stay at Sir Nikolai. On arrival we were greeted by super friendly and charming staff. We were checked in by Csaba who made us feel more than welcome after an exhaustive trip to Germany. He offered us a welcome drink, arranged dinner reservations for us and instantly made us feel at home. We booked a standard room category but were kindly offered an upgrade by him which we accepted for an extra charge and we were not disappointed. We got a big room with a nice view of the canal and a huge bathtub in the living room area! Absolutely worth it! Modern, cosy interior - very well designed. Super comfy bed and everything very clean. The room alone mad our stay one to remember. Highly recommended!

The check in was perfect; welcome drink and a lovely chat about what to expect of Hamburg and recommendations for places to visit. The hotel has a lovely feel (and that luxury aroma). Although we had the lowest category room, (but with a view over the canal) it was just right. The shower and wc are separate and the sink area is in the main room, but designed so that it felt like a different space away from the bed area. Loads of interesting pictures and artefacts expertly displayed. There are cheaper options available but this hotel is well worth any extra.

Stayed for 5 nights…met by Annika the front desk who was so kind and helpful after a long day of travel. She and all of her colleagues are very knowledgeable about the city and eager to share their insights. Special requests were no problem and unlike other hotels I’ve stayed in Europe, taken care of of quickly and completely.
Note to Marriott Elite members: Your elite benefits do not get you free breakfast at Sir hotels! You do accumulate points and they do provide a bottle of water, but that’s all for the most part. I say this because the breakfast, while very good, is expensive, I believe 20 euros per person. There are also snacks and liquor on the cart in the room and in the minibar, but there is no price list to explain the process or how much each item costs. Had a few surprises when we checked out to say the least! Suggest the hotel maybe provide a list or make that more clear.
The rooms are small but decorated very nicely with a trendy but not too over the top collection of art and collectibles as well as books that were very interesting .
Suggest you opt for a Sir Suite which give more space and ask for a room with a canal view. The Nikolai church memorial and tower are right across the canal. It’s a beautiful and stark reminder of the pain and cost of war.
All in all a good stay…the staff really make the difference! BTW, there is no gym but they have a rate with Fitness First for 10 euros and its a full service gym a few minutes walk. Full set of weights for any lifter! The location is also good for many Hamburg attractions like the performing arts center which is a see if there is a show you’d like to attend while in town.

Dear Badgerhound, Thank you very much for your positive review. Your feedback gives us great insight that we as a hotel can learn from again. We have shared your positive findings with our colleague Annika. It brought a big smile to her face. We probably forgot to mention to you that you can access the guest service directory by scanning the QR code on your key card holder. In it you will find all the hotel information and prices of the minibar. We look forward to welcoming you back to Sir Nikolai Hamburg in the future. Best regards, Your Sir Nikolai Team

I booked a suite for June 3rd-5th. The hotel is located in a side sreet to the Speicherstadt, a lively area with many restaurants, cafes and sightseeing attractions. The dramatic and somewhat confusing entrance leeds into a wonderful and uniquely furnished space. My suite consisted of actually 2 suites which, as I was travelling alone was too much of a good thing so I requested at the reception a correction. However I was advised that this was the reservation and chnages could only be made for the 2nd day and credit would be issued.
The suite was wonderful, spacious, well and efficiently equipped. Everything was in good taste and of the highest standard. The room was dead quiet despite the a/c running. A well appointed and stylish bathroom with many little thoughtful accessories which made the palce truly enjoyable. The complimentary breakfast was generous and varied, the service excellent and the restaurant/breakfast facility had two balconies suspended in air over the canal below. Well done. This could have been an otherwise wonderful experience iff not for that little mix-up with the room. Upon departure I paid full fare but was advised (it was a Sunday) that a credit would be issued to my credit card on Moday. Well Monday has come and gone Timon, who is the manager and I am still waiting for that credit.
It would be a shame if an otherwise wonderful stay would be clouded by a silly thing like this.
Despite my grievance which I hope w i l l be addressed I wholeheartedly recommend this gem.

+1
We had a long weekend at Hamburg and decided to stay at Hotel Sir Nikolai for 2 nights. It was a great stay. The personal was welcome and despite the constraints due to the pandemic, we felt very welcomed there.
The location was great for exploring the city. The hotel is located 10 min walking from the city center and you can reach the Harbour as well by foot.
The room was exceptionally clean and included a coffee machine, which we appropriated. The decoration in the room was very tastefully put and I really enjoy to stay there. The view from the room was some tall building and a channel with a bridge. The bed was amazing and overall we could have a good rest there.
The breakfast was somehow limited. Due to the pandemic we had to chose our breakfast from a menu and to point out at what time slot we want to eat our breakfast. The food was very delicious but I found the menu somehow limited for the price of full buffet breakfast.
I did‘t feel so well on the day of our departure and the hotel personal was so friendly and allowed by boyfriend to bring the breakfast to our room. Also we asked to check out an hour later after the standard time and our wish was fulfilled without paying anything extra. We were very grateful for that as I had some health problems.
Overall, I would recommend this hotel for a nice stay in Hamburg near the city center.

Dear Zafina, Thank you kindly for your review. We truly appreciate your positive feedback and we are thrilled to read about the good experience you had whilst staying in our hotel. We understand that you were dissapointed with the breakfast policy. Unfortunately this was out of our hands due to the Covid regulations we have to adhere to. However, we still very much appreciate the feedback and we will take it into consideration should we have to go back to pre-ordered breakfast again. We believe that health is more important than anything and we are happy to have been able to contribute to you feeling better on your day of departure. We hope to see you again in the near future and also hope that you have recovered from being ill. Best regards, Team Sir Nikolai

We stayed for new year. The hotel is a good base for sightseeing. We didn’t have breakfast as it was very expensive compared to most breakfast prices. The room was quirky but the bathroom door didn’t shut properly and there was no handle on the inside and the shower door leaked water onto the floor outside. It wasn’t cheap but all hotels were similar prices by the time we booked. We would stay again

This was one of the best hotels I have ever stayed in. I was welcomed with an invitation for a welcome drink and checkin by two receptionists who were exceptional. The large room had a separate shower and a separate toilet (don’t be fooled by the mirrors). There was also an alcove for the sink with numerous amenities. My room was quiet, immaculate and creatively decorated. The breakfast was an extra 25 euros, but wasn’t your standard buffet. In addition you were also waited on and asked if you wanted to order an omelette or eggs benedict. Coffee and tea were available in the room if you didn’t choose breakfast. There is also quite the assortment of purchase items in the room, including your very own minibar drink shelf with top shelf drink selections. Sir Nikolai was within walking distance of many of the popular sites like the Rathaus, Speicherstadt, Miniature Wunderland and Chocoversum. I would absolutely stay here again if I return to Hamburg! It was one of a kind.

My stay at Sir Nicolia was very disappointing. The services was not good, you had to specify if you want to have breakfast and order the exact breakfast before 9pm on the day before. There were no enough staff to provide a proper service at the hotel and their manager was really arrogant in addressing the issue claiming that “All Hotels in Hamburg” have no staff because of Covid. I informed him that I will be returning back and staying at Atlantic Hotel and he claimed that his girl friend works there are no staff there which was complete lie. Room AC was not working properly and no one was available to help and also they didn’t replace the toilet paper and I had to go down and get more from the restaurant toilet!! This was a big disappointment

We have been at the hotel sevwral times, and loved it.
This time we got bad service at the reception. And the worst breakfast ever, lasr time we got lovely breakfast from the restaurant, the restaurant has now closed and now the hotel try to make the breakfast... Very bad at 22 euro pr Pers.
Be side the hotel there was contruktion, building New house or hotel. There was so much noice at our room. We got a New room, besidde the main ventilation, the sound was crasy, like staying in the bottom if a old ferry. Then we got a New room, crazy contruktion noise from 06.30 every morning. The hotel should write on the webside that there is contruktion noise,or send an e-mail to us, so that we knew and maybe book anohter hotel. Vere bad service
