We stayed at Hotel Sonne because it was a great location to get the bus to visit Neuschwanstein, but we were so impressed by the hotel and staff that we extended our stay. The rooms are beautifully appointed and very clean - we were lucky enough to have a corner room that overlooked the street below and it was perfectly situated for people-watching. The staff was wonderful and Fuessen is such a quaint, charming town that we never ran out of things to do or places to visit.

There seems to be nothing uniform about this hotel in Fussen, including the staff. When I saw the guy on reception in a flat cap I raised an eye but on the whole the staff were pleasant, the room was clean and tidy and there was a lounge/bar. My room was accessed by the "furry" lift (carpet on the wall). There was no logical layout to this place, a bit of a warren really but all added to the "Quirky" feel. Quirky décor, some rooms had strange artwork or even a vintage uniform or dress in them. The small lobby had costumes of the period of Ludwig II and there were rooms named after characters from his life. Only issue was my room was over the main street. The monastery bells rang at 5.30 every morning (to wake up the monks; I am NOT a Monk! at least I was wide awake and didn't miss the breakfast which was very good and again some thing different. I have never seen ratatouille for breakfast and then the next two hours are taken up with street cleaning machines and shutters being opened and bins being emptied. If the weather had been better I could have taken advantage of the terrace although this was not a large beirgarten style area. I would stay again.

This hotel gets 5 out of 5 for their good understanding how to make (potential) visitors happy. We booked this hotel in Germany as stop over for one night on our journey to Austria. Two days before we would leave home, the government of Austria changed the rules that people must comply to to be allowed to enter the country (COVID omikron). We could not get our third vaccination in time so we could not go to Austria. We needed to cancel our complete trip, including our night in hotel Sonne. The Hotel understood our situation and cancelled our room free of charge even though according to the reservation conditions we should pay 90% of the daily rate. This is what good hospitality is about!
Hotel Sonne understands very well that long term earnings are more important than short term earnings. Because of this we decided to book a longer stay in this hotel as soon as the COVID conditions are fully in control again. I want to thank them again for their great service.

Hotel Sonne is right in the centre of Fussen, well located for cafes, restaurants and so on. It's beautiful inside and out, and has clearly had lots of money spent on its recent refurbishment. However, some of the basics for a good hotel were missing or poor:
- You need to book parking spaces in advance, but this was not made clear to us at the time of booking. There are not enough spaces for all guests to park their cars, and, because the hotel is so central, other parking is hard to find.
- There are no tea, coffee (or any) facilities in the rooms, only an overpriced small shop in the lobby
- The restaurant plays loud music until late, which will disturb guests on the first floor

On the plus side, breakfast was very good, and there is an (almost) free to use washing machine and tumble dryer available for guests.

Oh what a nice place this could be.
If only…

I knew that the tiny basic rooms don‘t have A/C when booking the room. But in the summer heat, they are heating up like crazy. Sleeping with the window open is not an option, as there is noise the whole night from the pedestrian area and road crossing beneath the room. Why isn‘t there at least a ventilator?
Even the bathroom (in a ‚refurbished’ room doesnˋt have a vent in it).

The comical small in-room fridge which didn‘t cool my 2 bottles of coke was also so hot outside that the room heated more up. Add a heavy smell from renovation works on the same floor and you can imagine how bad the three nights have been.
Questions for a paid upgrade to the rooms with A/C have been declined with ‚we are fully booked‘. Yet, I would have been able to book these rooms on their web page.

I have never ever felt so uncomfortable in any hotel I‘ve been. Including stays in 2 star hotels in southern countries in the 90s…

Response from Sebastian Daidone, Geschäftsführer at Hotel Sonne
Responded 29 Jun 2021
Dear Mr. Jobager, thank you for stay in our hotel and your hones review. We are very sorry for the heat and the smell of renovation in your room. We updated all of the rooms during the lockdown, so 95% of all rooms are now equipped with a/c. As to the high request on rooms on the weekend you stayed in our hotel, we were not able to move you to another room that was equipped with air condition. At least we had offered you to move to another room in the same category, this was denied from your side. We are sorry, that we could not meet your expectations regarding the room. Be sure, we took action and fixed all problems that showed up at your stay. Again, we want to apologize for the problems this might have caused you. We would like to welcome you again in our hotel. Please contact us directly regarding your review and we will find a good solution for your next stay. With very best regards, Sebastian Daidone GUEST RELATION

Fussen was a great location for our day trip to Neuschwanstein and Linderhof castles but in comparison to the other hotels we stayed at during our Bavaria week long road trip it was okay. I can’t recommend it but given the limited options in the area keep your expectations low if you do stay here

The room’s air conditioning didn’t work making the sleep quality awful and decor was sparse and the pillows were also extremely bad.

The staff was helpful and a clean hotel. It was nice they had a bar but it was full of flies.

Have your eyes wide open if you decide to stay here

The good :-
1)Hotel Sonne has a great location, just a short distance from the central train station.
2)Breakfast is very good.
3) Staff was friendly.
4) Aircon worked despite it being winter! Many hotels in Europe we’ve been to switched off their aircon system in winter which many times left the room too warm and stuffy.
The bad :-
1) We got a medium quadruple room for 4 persons. It is not very big. Just enough space for 4 persons if the luggages are not opened..There is no room to accommodate 4 opened luggages at once.
2) The flooring is made up of what looks like vinyl tiles and feels hard. I’m not sure what material it is. It looks badly stained but the reception staff told me it is not stained. He said its vintage design makes it seems so. Whatever, it makes the floor appear dirty and makes me uncomfortable to go barefooted on it.
3) The shower is squeezed into a small corner and it shares a swinging glass door with the toilet. Not only is this impractical, the door cannot keep all the water in the shower stall. Depending on where one directs the shower head while showering, water can seep out and create pools of water in the toilet. There is also no lock in the door that leads to bathroom stall cum toilet stall.
4) There are no hooks or ledges to hand towels or clothing in the bathroom.

So many reviewers have talked about Hotel Sonne's great location (close to restaurants, shopping, etc.) and the friendly and helpful reception staff, and we agree with all of that. But what really impressed us was how wonderfully quiet our room was, and we were on the first floor directly over the busy main street and traffic circle. When we walked into the room for the first time, we actually groaned, fearing that we would not have a minute of sleep during our 3-night stay. They must have the best window glazing because we never heard a thing (and I'm a pretty light sleeper). The only negative I can mention is the odd bathroom configuration. It is very open (with just a thin curtain, rather than a door) and a frosted glass window that opens up into the bedroom. When the bathroom light is turned on, the light shines directly onto the bed so it's impossible to get up early and get ready without waking up your sleeping partner. Other than that, though, we had a really good stay and would recommend Hotel Sonne to anyone visiting Fussen.

We chose the hotel primarily due to its location in the centre of Fussen and in close proximity to Neuschwanstein. It's the perfect base - literally on the main street of Fussen and on the main road leading to Neuschwanstein area within 5 min' drive.

We found the room to be quite small (bathroom too) although it did come with a balcony. We wanted to use the spa but when we visited it was totally deserted with a screen closing off the area (it was supposed to be open though) so we left due to the lack of atmosphere.

Front desk staff are always smiling and very helpful. We had both dinner and breakfast at the restaurant RIWA and the breakfast particularly was a highlight. Amazing spread with great variety and the best coffee machine I've seen. Food at the dinner was ok but they make some killer cocktails, with a great ambiance. Seems to be a popular place with locals which is always a good sign.

Most people who visit Fussen come to visit sights. This hotel would be a good choice. It is located close to a lot of things: restaurants, sights and bus stop.

The room we were given was big. It had a huge shower, a bath tub, a separate toilet and a generous sink with counters. We were so happy that we had so much space in the room.

We were given instructions on how to check in but unfortunately, the parking spaces at the side to drop off bags were full. Luckily, we got to go into the underground parking and my husband stayed in the car while I walked up to inquire about our parking space. The personnel in the front desk was very kind and understanding and explained that we could park on a specific slot and told me to ignore the name - the next day it was our names on the wall of the parking slot. Check in was fast and efficient. If you have a car, suggest you reserve a slot when you make your booking.

The front desk staff was very helpful in giving information about the sights, the bus schedules and the restaurants. This is a good place to stay if you are planning to spend a few days in Fussen
