The decor is a mix of traditional styles, and will not appeal to those looking for something Zen, (although they will find solace in the Koi carp pool on the terrace at the rear, which has some of the largest Koi I have ever seen) but the beds were exceptionaly comfortable, with fluffy duvets and once the window issue noted above was solved, we slept very soundly. I don't understand the reviewer complaining about breakfast; although we had the simple Continental breakfast, bread and coffee were refilled on request without extra charge. The real attraction is however dinner and the exceptional wine list, which is of about 90 pages and has the most impressive range of German wines imaginable, often offering the same wine in several vintages. The range of wines available by the glass is also far above the norm. The cooking is not as exceptional as the wine list, but is very good, offering a short selection of imaginatively executed variants on Swabian cuisine. Food and wine is not cheap - this is Stuttgart, but it is not excessive for such a location.
Bed was soft and comfy, another Germany quirk is no top sheet but just a duvet. A/C worked well. Breakfast was just ok, lots of breads and cheese and the waitress asked if we wanted an omelette and it was a decent cheese omelette but honestly, we skipped the breakfast the second day because we were underwhelmed.
The Koi pond in back was beautiful! A nice surprise.
Parking was TIGHT so if you have bigger car good luck. Onsite parking was great to have though (for a fee).
I didn't have an ipad in my room but my friend did and she said it didn't really do anything. I also didn't know I had a mini bar in my room until checkout... probably a good thing ;)
All in all enjoyed my stay - staff was very friendly and made me feel welcome.
I absolutely hate to do this, as I have NEVER had to write such a negative comment ever before, but after the situation I went through I feel it's important to share this information to save pain for anyone else.
#1 they say they are PET FRIENDLY but this is not the case.
They have strict pet policies not specified earlier (online), you are not allowed to leave your pet in the room unsupervised. This is ridiculous and to me does not mean "pet friendly".
I went for lunch and left my 5 Kg dog in the kennel.
I was LECTURED IN THE MAIN RECEPTION AREA about this walking in from lunch!
SWF here, old enough to know better young enough not to care... I had informed the hotel I would be out late. He seemed friendly enough at the time and said I could come and go as I please, just not to forget the key. WELL.
I went out late on a Saturday night. I had every intention to go have some fun and probably come back drunk... My friend brought me back to the hotel and the manager CHASED ME around the hotel and FORCED HIS WAY INTO MY ROOM to "find" my friend who was NOT ALLOWED to stay OR visit me. I was not offered to pay a stipend for a late night visitor, but instead was yelled at and chased around the hotel at wee hours of the night. The fact that this large burly old man BARGED into my room (actually pushed his way into it while I was trying to shut the door) was SCARY and definitely not the way I would want to feel in ANY hotel establishment.
*No visitors past midnight, also not mentioned. Oh, and no sex allowed apparently. (this was made clear by his commenting later on how he knew what I was up to and that kind of behavior was unacceptable. How did he ever have children? Sheesh.)
He embarrassed me the following morning (when I went expecting an apology) by YELLING AT ME me in front of his staff (and anyone else to walk through the reception area) about the state of my room, condoms in the garbage, leaving my dog alone in the room, and using the back entrance to remove my luggage. (supposedly also forbidden.) At this point I was so infuriated I demanded to check out a night early, but was still charged 2 full nights. I paid 300$ for 1 night and a horrible experience! I felt like a child being reprimanded for not knowing the rules.
Which, I should mention, the manager will make up anything to be a rule if he doesn't approve of you or your lifestyle. I would NOT recommend this location to ANYONE under the age of 50 or who is sexually active, drinks alcohol, or is seeking pet friendly.
I was so disappointed as this was to be a treat, and it is a lovely hotel with a good location.
Just be careful with the old man, clearly he has left his youth behind long, long ago.
Our timing was a little off, we arrived just as the restaurant was closing for two weeks for their annual vacation. Don't make the same mistake - the restaurant has a very high reputation with our friends who lived in the town, and you should make plans to eat there. Even though the restaurant was closed for dinner, it was open for breakfast every morning. The buffet breakfast had dozens of choices, including many different kinds of fresh local breads and cheeses, jams, meats, etc. It was quite filling and very tasty.
I would stay there again in a heartbeat!
Don't forget to leave your key with the front desk as you leave each day, and retrieve it when you return. There is only one key per room, and if you take it with you, then they can't enter the room (e.g. the "maid" can't make up the room). Not a big problem, as soon as they saw us enter, the "maid" made up the room right away.
-Staff are friendly and helpful
- We stayed in an apartment room for 4 with a balcony viewing the hotel's garden
