Nestled in a remote yet stunning location near Embas beach, The Moso Vanuatu is celebrated for its uniquely private and chic atmosphere that seamlessly integrates with the tropical environment. Guests often highlight the comfort and distinctive design of the rooms, as well as the overall cleanliness and sustainable approach of the hotel.
The private amenities, including villas with plunge pools and opportunities for outdoor activities, receive high marks, just as the friendly and attentive service does. While the value for money receives mixed reviews, many find the luxurious touches justify the expense.

This is our second stay at The Moso. We stayed in May 2023 and again in November 2024.
In 2023 we stayed in villa 6 with a plunge pool. In 2024 we were in villa 7, a hilltop lap pool villa and then villa 2, with a plunge pool. Each vila has its own style and you can see the progression of Joel, Antoun and Andrew's design and construction skills as you rise up the hill with the hilltop lap pool villas being the most spectacular and absolutely worth paying a premium for.
How to get the most out of your stay at The Moso: If, like us, you snorkel then take the 30 minute walk over the spine of the island to Embas beach. We would walk over to Embas every day. It is best for snorkelling at 0.7m to 1.2m on a rising tide. At dead low of 0.1m there just isn't enough water to get over the coral so wait for a rising tide. There's an excellent array of soft corals in close 10-20m offshore. The best hard corals are found 400m offshore in about 3-5m of water. If you aren't confident to go out that far there is still plenty to see in close. Embas is an isolated gem, most days we'd have the entire beach to ourselves or on the odd occasion had to share it with one other couple. Every time we went out there was something new to see.
There is noting better than walking back from an isolated beach all hot sweaty than rinsing off in your outdoor shower then getting into your own private plunge pool.
The rooms are very comfortable and well appointed. The decor matches the tropical setting. All the staff are friendly and helpful, especially Nunes and Jason.
My secret guilty pleasure is reading bad trip advisor reviews and the bad reviews of the Moso do not disappoint. The Moso might not be for you if you don't understand that being on a tropical island in the middle of the South Pacific means things happen outside of everyones control. If there are insects and geckos in the room it's because you are on a tropical island in the South Pacific. If the restaurant doesn't have particular ingredient don't get mad rather think about where you are and that everything comes in by boat.
The Moso is a small boutique resort in a spectacular location. If you want to snorkel or trek up an extinct volcano in tropical splendour and then come back to private luxury then The Moso might well be for you. If you want shopping and a party town you are in the wrong place.
Joel, Antoun and Andrew are friendly, welcoming and great hosts.
We will keep coming back for the adventure of snorkelling at Embas topped off with the luxury and privacy of the excellent villas.

We recently stayed at Moso Magic Beach House as part of a large group celebrating a 50th Birthday at The Moso. The house is located next door to the resort so you can come and go as you please which is nice to be able to be part of the action but then when you need some timeout you can head home and find a lounge to curl up in and unwind.
Joel & Antoun were the ultimate party hosts and our whole holiday was effortless because of their care and organisation. We had wonderful long lunches under the trees and fully catered dinners for 20 night after night. The food was fresh and delicious and even though we were only a week after the two cyclones (without a lot of supplies available) you would never have known. The menu changed daily with delicious curries, pizzas, seafood pasta and of course the firm favourite of all the guests was the tuna carpaccio - especially as we all saw the fisherman delivering the fish straight to the kitchen!
On days that we just felt like lazing around at the Magic House we could order food and cocktails to be delivered to the house. Joel helped us before we arrived to pre-order some kitchen staples so we could just have a late breakfast by our pool or a cheese platter as the sun went down. The house has a great kitchen with everything you need to whip up a simple omelette or bbq lunch for a dozen people.
The house was serviced daily by smiling staff who quickly and quietly tidied up around us and then vanished like they were never there.
The Moso Magic Beach House has a wonderful outlook over the pool to the harbour where you can sit and read and sip champagne all day and if you feel like being a little energetic the snorkelling out the front is wonderful or jump on a paddle board and go exploring around the bay.
Thank you to all the staff at The Moso for making our group holiday so fun and easy and we cant wait to come back soon.

What can I say that hasn’t already been said, my wife and I have had the most amazing holiday at the most beautiful place. We stayed in the beach front villa and cannot fault it at all, it gave us a tiny piece of paradise to switch off, unwind and relax. This place is special and I don’t say that lightly, the staff are amazing so friendly and welcoming going above and beyond at all times, the owners Antoun, Joel and Andrew are so genuine and always ready to stop and have a chat. The island is amazing, pristine waters to swim in, as well as the beach in front there is also a private beach on the other side of the island you can walk over to, we spent the day there and felt like we were the only 2 people in the world. Every meal we had from breakfast to dinner was wonderful, the food really impressed me and considering the lack of some ingredients after the cyclones I can only imagine how good it will be when everything is freely available again, we stayed for 9 nights so we got to try everything off the menu and not one thing disappointed us. The resort offers an amazing level of privacy with only limited villas and the layout we really only bumped in to people at meal times, did I mention the food was good 😊. The bar was also a great little spot we had some amazing cocktails in the evenings. We will be back for sure we are already planning when. The day we left we did so with a surprising sadness like leaving family behind, the moso and everyone there really left an impression on us and we cant wait to see you again.

I want to be as fair as possible to the resort as I write this but my simple view is was this resort value for money? The answer is No. The accommodation is basic, not luxurious, concrete floors, wooden slatted windows with mosquito blind covers. But these didn't stop the rats getting in. We were visited several times during the night! It is a tropical island and one expects wildlife, but not in ones room! There is a fridge and a storage rail for your clothes, but that's sort of all you get. They are spacious with a lounge area, bedroom and bathroom. But our shower never got hot!
Our initial experience of the food was not good. Several meals were returned or left uneaten. Many of the dishes on offer on the menu were not available. Again I understand that this is an island resort and supplies will be a challenge, but this resort is charging top prices and giving less that top service. Our week cost over £2000.00 and the service could be improved. One of our waiters scrapped the uneaten food from our plates onto one before clearing from the table. he would have been shot at waiter school!
The location is without a doubt beautiful, white sandy beaches, warm water, definitely casual attire throughout the stay. But it needs to improve. If the menu isn't available then the menu should reflect that, not letting the guest order things that aren't there. That said it did improve throughout the week, but initially we thought about cancelling the rest of our trip and going elsewhere. Not good!
Costs of transfers need to be addressed. We booked some dives with the nearby dive resort and on the Moso literature it was quoted as a days diving including transfers as Van 17900. But the dive resort charged Van 18000 and The Moso initially charged us Van 3500 each person, each way. We did manage to negotiate this down to Van 1000 each BUT we shouldn't have to do that at all.
Overall would I go back, I'm very sorry to say that's unlikely. In my humble opinion things need to be sharpened up. If you are charging close to Aus $500 per night I would expect mush higher standards of service and facilities. Things shouldn't run out at that sort of price.
Sorry the Moso, but if people don't review honestly then things wont change. Good luck for you future.

Thanks for your feedback Peter. We are sorry you didn't appreciate our villas, but I guess that is just a matter of personal taste. Our design was based on simplicity. The villas do have Mini bars, Kettles, Nespresso machines, lounges, locally carved stools and tables, hanging egg chairs, bathrobes, lovely locally produced toiletries and really comfortable beds and pillows. Mice are part of our environment, we do everything we can to keep them at bay. Unfortunately when food is kept in the villas it attracts them, this is why we always suggest keeping all food in the fridge. We have also invested in Crim-Safe screens for the villas. All villas have hot water, and yours was tested the day your wife mentioned it, and it was working. Beyond this we didn't hear of any issues with the hot water. The fish that was returned was credited from your bill and you were given a fruit platter free of charge. Other guests who had the same dish that night, were completely satisfied with the dish, so maybe this was a matter of personal taste as well. Our pricing is determined by the cost of food here in Vanuatu, although we do use 90% locally sourced foods and our service has never been advertised as silver service, however we do take all feedback seriously to improve our teams service level. Also our menus are all listed on the website for guests to check out prior to booking. After our meeting on the beach the next day, it was clear you did not want to order from the dinner menu, your groups suggestions were: You could eat from the less expensive lunch menu - advised you could eat from the lunch menu if ordered by 3pm English people love curries - every night after we had a curry on the menu as a special More green vegetables for the diabetic in your group - the following day plenty of greens were available at the market The new staff member who scraped the plates in front of you, has been given additional training and doing remarkably well. Thanks for the feedback. Diving transfers - are not negotiable - although you did negotiate the price to what you thought was acceptable, even when the dives were not booked from the compendium in the villa. Room rates - you paid VT23,000 (AUD$294) per night - usual rate is VT30,500 (AUD$390) - not sure where the AUD$500 comes from? Peter, we understand that our offering is not for everyone, and after many suggestion box ideas from your party we certainly understood that we were not the right fit for you. Antoun and I discussed if we should relocate you to alternative accommodation early in your stay, and as you suggested above, this may have been a good idea. We are here to look after our guests and ensure they have a great time, but we cannot recreate our entire establishment to meet individual needs. Sure, we can modify menus to suit allergies (if advised in advance), and specific eating requirements, we can add items to your mini bar or customise a tour, but we cannot change the design of the resort or our entire menu based on an individual budget or desire. We understand that you won't be back to see us again, and we are comfortable with that. Apart from some staff training and some additional mouse proofing of the villas, we will not be changing anything else. We wish you the best.

Rarely do you stay at a place that makes you feel the way The Moso does. There is so much attention to detail geared toward the pleasure of their guests. You are welcomed on to the island with a delicious Ginger Rogers cocktail and made to feel at home immediately afterwards.
Joel and Antoun are the perfect hosts. The kindness and generosity that they both extend to their guests, is a true reflection of their love for hospitality. Every single team member is polite, considered and extremely well trained in their area. It was a pleasure to be served by Ricky, Lizzy and Frank each day sharing many laughs and smiles. Ricky C on reception seamlessly handles every guests itinerary allowing you to relax and enjoy.
On the island you are blessed with pristine beaches with barely a sole on them. You can take a short 25-30 minute walk to the other side of the island and enjoy Embas beach. Here you are treated to a breathtaking beach and coral reef to snorkel around. Take a hammock from reception as well as a book and appreciate untouched paradise.
The restaurant offers breakfast, lunch and dinner with a sensational cocktail list and well crafted wine list. Most meals you’ll find guests conversing between tables or swinging in a chair sipping Pina Colada’s together. The Moso provides a unique and inclusive space with Joel & Antoun often joining their guests for a chat. The food is delicious. Beautiful breakfasts, local Tanna coffee, fresh coconuts and fruit juices to be enjoyed. The lunch menu has an impressive Middle Eastern tapas offering as well as fresh seafood and salads. Thank you Antoun for crafting such a menu that you always leave sated and for introducing us to Manoush!
Now for the rooms, oh the rooms! We stayed in both the plunge pool villa and the hilltop lap pool villa. Rooms are spacious, breezy and tastefully decorated with Hamptons inspiration. Beds are incredibly comfortable with lovely Sheridan and Morgan & Finch linen. We slept so well for our 6 nights stay. The plunge pool villa has the most stunning out door shower and bath which we used daily. The hilltop lap pool villa is simply a treat! The views are breathtaking especially at sunrise. You can loose so much time staring into the distance wishing you didn’t have to leave. There is also an outdoor shower that provides you with quite possibly the best view you will every have getting clean. This villa is luxury.
6 nights really weren’t long enough. I will be missing The Moso and it’s beautiful people until we return again. Thank you, the pleasure truly was ours.

We stayed in the Moso Magic beach house for the weekend with two families. Staff were unhelpful and at times rude. Charges were added that we were never informed about (boat transfer fees to get back to the mainland-I suppose the other option was swimming) and when we queried this we were told management was “too busy” to speak to us. We then paid for two boats only for one to show up (no talk of refund for the no show). It has the usual lack of polish that everywhere in Vanuatu suffers from (in this case no detergent for sink, non-functioning dishwasher, bugs on the bed, dirty glassware) that I expected wouldn’t be there given the luxury branding and high price. We were inexplicably told to leave the restaurant promptly after our expensive lunch because of children, despite the hospital policy saying children were permitted between 10-4. We were about to leave anyway and if it had been done politely it would have been no issue. It is the type of place where you are made to feel like the hotel’s shortcomings are your own fault. It’s a real pity because the location is great and the food is better than most places on Efate.

Thanks for your feedback Miles. We are disappointed that you felt our team were unhelpful and at times rude. We certainly will have a chat to them about this. In regards to the bus and boat transfers, Nunes had messaged you about these charges on Whatsapp, he did advise there would be an additional charge if our transfer company was to collect you from your home in Bellevue, you opted to be collected from a more central spot where there was no additional charge. It was never suggested that the transfers were included, as they are not for any of our guests. You had extra transfers as both families arrived at different times. Max is our team leader and was dealing with your dispute. There was no need to go higher with the dispute as the messages on whatsapp advised what the communication had been. We will address the cleaning issues in the house, which is not part of the resort, it is a self contained holiday home. Thank you for pointing this out though, we value constructive feedback. We believe our Bistro pricing is fair and would like some extra feedback on what you thought was expensive. As you live here in Port Vila I am sure you are aware of the costs of things, but as a person who dines out in Port Vila on a regular basis, I would suggest that our pricing is less than many establishments, taking into account our location and transportation costs. Our Bistro policy is that we allow children under 16 to "dine" between 10am and 4pm daily. On this particular occasion we had several complaints from in house guests and a resident that lives up the hill about the screaming and uncontrollable children in the BIstro. Our hanging egg chairs were being used as swings and guests left the Bistro because "It felt like a children's playground". We are delighted you enjoyed the food on a positive note.

The Moso is a very special place not just a resort. The small size creates a hugely relaxing feeling of being a welcomed guest. Its villas are very comfortable, all privately set in the beautiful gardens and create a sense of being right away from things. The staff and owners were warm with their smiles, friendship and welcome and obviously had a sense of belonging and love of this environment they had built and are sharing with others. It was lovely to talking to the locals as they wandered from their village to work or to another village. The Moso offered trips and ideas for activities to go on or you can simple relax their in the sea, pool and walk to the other side of the island, or enjoy a spa treatment. The bistro had nice food catering for all tastes and they made beautiful cocktails. We loved our villa with plunge pool and outdoor shower or bath. Great decor and design features in what felt like a beautiful fale without being out of character with this beautiful environment. I was a bit worried about no aircon before coming but the fans were great and the shade and shelter of the villa was lovely. This place really has authenticity. Tips - bring boat shoes and own snorkel gear. Some available but for serious snorkelling bring your own. Plenty of paddle boards and kayaks for all. Would recommend highly as a top stop in Vanuatu - wish we had booked our whole time there, certainly out shone our other accomodations on every count. The owners and local staff have created something really special here! Sometimes you can’t describe it, you just have to go and feel it!

I wouldn’t go back. Yes it was lovely at times and a very romantic experience, But overall very expensive and not a lot to do on the island. If you want to explore port villa I would highly recommend it and we paid for a full 8 hour private driver for the day. Most of the staff were very lovely and accommodating. Some didn’t really seem to know what was going on when we ask for help regarding money or booking certain things on time. Food was amazing but again the portions were small and they were expensive for what we expected. The room view was amazing and it was lovely to have our own pool. But the room was average at best and not up to the standards that are in photos… We had cold showers almost every night we were there and when we asked about it we were told it had something to do with the solar… I wasn’t very happy and it felt like fancy camping. The rooms had fans that worked as hard as they could but considering the owner had 3 aircon units on his villa it seemed like the comfort level of the guests was not his main property. And as advertised they are building 4 new villas but could have spent some of that money doing up the villas they have already.. It was definitely the small details that upset me as we paid a decent amount for this holiday.

Hi Guys, we are disappointed that you did not enjoy your time with us, but, thanks for your feedback. Just to clarify a few things you have mentioned. We most certainly are not in Port ViIla, which is the appeal of being on a secluded island, this does not suit all, some people like to be in the thick of it all, but we certainly do not advertise that we are. Our hot water does not work off our solar system, and after quizzing the staff nobody remembers a conversation about the hot water, and we all know that the hot water is not solar. We apologise if there was no hot water, if this was mentioned we would have rectified the issues ASAP. The past few weeks have been very hot, as they have been in Australia, and the cold water temperature is certainly not cold, most guests have advised they would have liked the cold water to be colder to have a cold shower. We certainly do have fans in the villas for guest comfort, Late Jan and Feb are the hottest months of the year and this is why it is our lowest season of the year. You have mentioned that the owner has 3 aircon units, this is completely false. There are no aircon units in the resort, as we do run entirely on solar for all our power requirements, it is not physically possible to run aircon. We are not sure how you came to this conclusion and we certainly do not put our comfort above the guests, we had the same very hot and humid conditions you experienced. Possibly have a look into travel to the tropics outside of the hottest time of the year or book something that has air con if humidity and heat are not your thing. In regards to the villas not being up to standard, we would love to get your feedback on this, so we can rectify any issues. Also, if you could elaborate on the staff not knowing what was going on, this would be very helpful too. You can email me personally on joel@themosovanuatu.com so I can look into this. The cost of food and portion sizes - our pricing is reflective of most resorts and hotels in Vanuatu, and one must remember that we are in a remote location, so our costs to get supplies in from the markets and suppliers in Port Vila are higher than most other properties. We however appreciate your feedback on the quality of the food. In this instance, maybe The Moso wasn't the right fit for you, possibly a larger hotel with Air Con and Buffets would have been more suitable, also a resort that was closer to all the action may have been a better fit. Looking forward to your email with the feedback.

It was what we hoped for and more. A beautiful spot to relax and unwind, but equally offering the ability to immerse yourself in the beautiful environs. With a coral reef on your doorstep, diving with sea turtles became a common, beautiful theme for our stay. In terms of the hotel and its facilities, they are what you'd expect for a remote, tropical location with the added value of being clean, modern and well-equipped. The staff are friendly and professional, always keen to attend to your every need. As vegans, the kitchen had no problem in adjusting some of their menu to cater for us. You could perhaps make a case that they could add some more variety, but we weren't there for fine dining - we were there for an experience and to relax, and that's exactly what we got. We're definitely going back.

Firstly I would like to pass on my thanks to the local staff that served us whilst we were at the Moso. Amelia, Alvina, Alice, Frank & Nunez. My poor rating is absolutely NO reflection on these staff. My poor rating of the Moso is due to the fact that we did not recieve the accommodation my husband had booked & paid for. This holiday was booked by my husband as a surprise for me & he decided not to tell me about being in a DOWNGRADED room until we left the Island. We should have been in a beach front villa with sun-loungers at the front with a great view of the beach & ocean. What we got was the garden villa with no outside area for us to relax in and with absolutely no view unless of course you think the back wall of Villa 1 is a view. This meant we either had to sit inside our villa or sit in public areas, where we were not able to consume our own alcohol. Not sure what the point of the mini bar is if the only place to enjoy the offerings is inside, who wants to sit inside their villa whilst on a tropical island? What should have been a wonderful surprise holiday for me & a relaxing beach front holiday for my husband was ruined by the management of the Moso not providing the accommodation booked & paid for. We have travelled as a couple around the world for over 35 years & never before have we been downgraded at a resort or hotel, we have experienced many upgrades but never this. The final insult by the management at the moso is to offer as compensation only the difference in room rates! The Moso's website makes the garden villa sound quite pleasant but the reality is quite the opposite & this is something we should never have experienced. It seems from what we learned whilst at the resort that if you book directly you get preferential treatment no matter what the detrimental effect is on guests that have already booked via an agent. SO DISSAPOINTING.

Hi Stuart and Jane, Thanks for your feedback, as we have mentioned in several other responses to your reviews, we have contacted your agent and offered a refund for the difference in room rates and we sincerely apologise for the oversight in the mix up with rooms. To clarify a few things you have mentioned in your reviews and in Jane your wifes reviews. During your stay with us, not once was it mentioned that you were not in the correct room type, clearly we had made an error, and were not aware of this. You were not moved to the Garden Villa because of our regular return guests, they had booked 2 months prior to your booking coming through and we moved one couple to an upgraded Hilltop Lap Pool villa to accomodate these regular guests in the villa they always stay in. Your booking was a complete oversight on our behalf and we apologise for this. However if it was mentioned to us, we could have fixed the issue to avoid all of the disappointment and negativity that has come from this human error. The assumptions and accusations your make on several fronts are completely incorrect. 1. The Garden Villa is exactly the same as both the beachfront villas in layout and design, only the location is different. 2. We work as a team here at the resort, it is not staff against owners or management, or visa versa, clearly you are blaming the owners for the errors that occurred, reservations are made by the reservations team, they are overseen by the Rooms Division team leader, and then the owners. We all take responsibility for the error that occurred. Nunes has the same authority as Max the team leader and the owners. 3. The one night you met the owner you are referring to, you were having a sit down with Villa 7, Jane and Annette were greeted in the Bistro by the owner and all went home. It was mentioned by Jane that she would like Frangipani tarts the next morning as was referred to in her 5/5 review initially left on the day of departure, we had run out of almond meal and were not able to bake these for Jane the next morning. (reference back to Jane's initial review 18th October on Google Business) An situation that certainly was not witnessed by either you or your partner. 4. As a team striving for 100% guest satisfaction we cannot ascertain why you would think we would deliberately downgrade you. This is of no benefit to us or you. We have many return guests and much of our business is referral by previous guests. This makes no sense for us to do this, and as mentioned above if we were aware of the situation we would have upgraded you. Once again we cannot be more apologetic about what happened, we have offered the refund to Myvanuatu for the difference in villa prices, we just wish you had mentioned this during your stay so we could have rectified the issue, rather than ruining your stay and having to spend the next few weeks making accusations and assumptions via online forums that have no benefit to either party. Everything is rectifiable when it is mentioned at the resort, it is virtually impossible to rectify such situations when you are in another country and not likely to return. Regards, Max and front desk team.
