We stayed the night at the Essex Arms after spending the day at Hampton Downs Race Track for the Ferrari Festival. The building is a fantastic old art deco building that has been beautifully kept with a lovely entrance way and reception. The rooms were very clean and tidy and were a very good option when all we needed was somewhere to sleep after a big day and before travelling home again. The service we received at the Essex Arms was fantastic, The man at reception was most accommodating - taking the time to show us the different room options before we decided what room type we wanted to book, he also took the time to walk around and personally show us the secure guests car park and the various features and facilites the Motel offered. The restaurant adjacent to the Essex Arms is called the Odd Spoon and the service we received in there was also exceptional and the food was wholesome with very large servings. The only problem we had was that the curtains were quite thin and there was a lot of street light coming through ther windows - making it difficult for a light sleeper, however it was very quiet and the beds were comfortable.

Good budget accommodation. Loved the staircase and domed roof reminded me of a grand old English pub. The room was large, showers great and bed very comfortable. We only stayed for one night and had tea at the local RSA. so didn't really try the local cafes. This place has a secure car park (a bonus) and or though next to roads and railway it was really quiet.

Room Tip: The rooms on the ground floor are large and would suit people with mobility problems.

Stayed here for 2 nights as a solo female traveler with a backpack, although I chose to go with a double room (I believe I was in room no. 4) instead of the backpacker option.

If you're going to visit Huntly, which isn't exactly New Zealand's hottest tourist destination, this hotel is the ideal place to stay. The location is fantastic, especially if you're traveling by bus: the bus stop is literally right in front of the hotel entrance. Since it's on the main street there are lots of food options within walking distance; go one way and you'll find the local restaurants (and a small produce store called the Fruit King), go the other way and you'll find the chain restaurants like McDonald's, KFC, etc. And if you're really lazy the hotel has a restaurant attached to it. Also within walking distance is the river, which has a path across a swamp-like area and views of the coal mines. Also within easy walking distance over the highway using one of the overpass bridges is Huntly Domain and stunning Lake Hakanoa.

I got some great sleep while here, partly because of the blistering cold conditions. The room wasn't particularly luxurious or modern, but it was very cozy and clean. No central heating, but there was a powerful space heater that kept me warm. Flatscreen TV, electric tea kettle, coffee and tea, and basic dinnerware were provided. Kevin and Gael, the owners, were very friendly and easygoing. No wifi available and no wired internet access in my room, but being disconnected was a welcome change. There's an internet station down the street if you get really desperate, though. Since I traveled via Intercity bus I can't speak to the parking situation at the hotel. One thing to note: the hotel can be prone to power issues, particularly during winter, due to all the rain and insane winds. Although they take credit cards (note that there is a surcharge fee), the credit card machine was down when I was there so I ended up paying for the entire stay with cash. Not a big deal, but you may want to come prepared just in case.

I don't know if I'll ever have a reason to visit modest little Huntly again, but if I ever do, I will definitely stay at Essex Arms again.

One night in Huntly and a very limited choice of eateries. It is all fast food with the exception of The Essex Arms. We had low expectations and were blown away about how good the food was. The pork infused with bourbon is a must and the chicken with quinoa was also excellence. Limited choice of wine and beers but well worth it for the food alone. The art decor building is lovely to look at too.

Over the last few years I have stopped many times at the Odd Spoon Cafe in the Essex Arms when in this part of the Waikato on Business , I had watched this business build up over the years to the point where I considered it well worth a stop if you were anywhere around , a very sharp operation with excellent fare and great service , the baking was very special and the cabinet displays could have been in Parnell or the Viaduct, i had not been in this area for quite some time so the staggering change I encountered when calling in the afternoon with an associate in late March was hard to believe , Where has the Gold Gone should have been written about the Odd Spoon Cafe , it was so bad and so different i would suggest there is really no intention to operate it as a drop in Cafe, literally there was nothing there on display and nobody in the place , Probably new ownership but i would suspect it will only be for a very short time , Time to look for somewhere better and cross this one off the list.

People were very welcoming, very friendly and the decor is well done. The steak was delicious and the desserts were excellent. Easy to find on the mail street of Huntly and quite a surprise to find such an up-market restaurant in the a town like Huntly. Good place to stop for a meal or break your journey from or to Auckland.

Carpet in room needed a good shampoo as lots of marks on it. Bed was comfortable and room was a good size. Service was very poor and couldnt find anyone around when I wanted to check out. There was a sign that said office was open from 7.30am. Went away and came back several times and still no-one around at 10.30 when I came back to hand in my entry to room card. Meals very average.

The Essex Arms Restaurant was recommended to us by a work colleague. Despite being fathers day we were served in an acceptable time frame. The food and service was great. The decor is a little tired and could do with an up date though. Great value for money dining.
