As yearly visitors to Lille around this time of year for the Christmas market and shopping, this time we found it very difficult to find an affordable place to stay that wasn't either miles away from the centre or wasn't room only (no breakfast). When we spotted this place with it's marvellous location (A stone's throw away from Lille Flandres station/ the main shopping mall) we booked without hesitation. We expected it to be basic. After a horrendously delayed Eurostar trip, we arrived at reception 3 hours later than scheduled just in time for the football. We walked into the bright reception area, was greeted by a friendly member of staff who gave us the key and we took the lift up to our room on the 4th floor. So far so good. Opened the door to the room popped our cases down and switched on the tv - Modern wall mounted set with a great picture. Two beds in the room one double, one single, a desk and chair small alcove with a couple of shelves for clothing and hanging rail with a few hangers, there was plenty of lighting, the room was lovely and warm thanks to a very efficient heater - Then there was the "bathroom"! I opened the door to what I thought was a cupboard to find a toilet, sink, and a very basic shower (which was a slightly recessed dip in the floor for drainage and a pull across curtain). There was a cigarette paper's gap between them all. It reminded me a lot of the sort of facility you mind find in a small caravan, or on a boating holiday, there was a slight step to get into this room and if anyone knows what I mean, you did get that weird sense of vertigo you get with this sort of cabin! Unfortunately, there was also a fairly mild aroma of drains, I sprayed some perfume around which kept it at bay somewhat, however, this smell did intensify as the stay progressed (only stayed 2 nights thankfully) and by the second morning, the smell had worked its way into the main room. Breakfast was extremely basic, coffee machine (lovely coffee though), orange juice, yoghurts, bread, brioche, baguettes and sachets of jam, no plates, so you had to eat straight from a tray which I wasn't that keen on, there was a couple of dispensers of cereal (no bowls?!) Ok I guess I could've found someone to ask but it was only corn flakes, and cheap looking choco flakes, so I didn't bother but it was something to set you up for a couple of hours. Would've liked to have seen some fresh fruit and some croissants, but never mind. There was no tea/coffee facilities in the room which was a bit disappointing too. In all, the hotel's in a convenient location, the beds are comfy and the room is warm - but the bathroom facilities were absolutely awful and because of that, I most certainly wouldn't consider staying there again.…
