Detailed Reviews
I found this hotel where I find most of my European hotels, at [--] which is an excellent site. I was a little concerned since the room was only 48€ , but once I got here, I was very pleased. There is no lift, no air conditioning, and the room is the size of a tiny third bedroom in the US, but for less than 50€, it's *totally* worth it. The bathroom, bed linens, carpet, and the room are all tidy and clean, and the location is outstanding, right in the middle of the downtown pedestrian district. The front desk person was super helpful, and they gave us a little device to get Ethernet over the power system. It's not the best connection in the world, but it's way better than no connection at all.
I love saving money on hotels, so I can spend more on dinner!
We drove here, and since so many of the streets are inacessable, we decided to park at the Marche des Grandes Hommes which is a block away.
For a night or two in Bordeaux, this hotel is worth more than its cost. The pedestrian area means the street is quiet, and there are very large windows in both the bedroom and bathroom. The location is impossible to beat.

I stayed at this hotel for a week in September while attending a conference. The hotels on the official meeting list were all Accor properties, and although I don't generally mind them, a search here at Tripadvisor suggested that the Bordeaux properties weren't perhaps the very best (and subsequent queries to my colleagues that used them confirmed this impression). They were also on the expensive side for me, due to the very poor exchange rate with the dollar at that time.
So I chose Hotel de France based on price, location, reviews here and elsewhere, and what little I could glean from the hotel web site. I was, in the end, quite pleased with my experience.
Booking was easy (via internet). I arrived to find that my room was apparently the last one available, but fortunately I found it acceptable: room 106, a single two floors above the entrance (the breakfast room is directly over the entrance) with french doors opening onto a small balcony. The road is very short, and although not pedestrianized receives very little traffic, as it dead ends into the pedestrianized main drag. No bars or restaurants on the road, so very quiet at night (I slept with the windows open). The view from the window is pleasant enough: apartment windows across the street, basically, as well as a pretty facade of some sort that I never bothered to identify.
The room was not huge, but actually large for a single, and possibly a room that had at one point been used for a double (in which case it would have been very small). Clean (especially clean by Bordeaux hotel standards---I was appalled by a couple in which I ended up visiting the rooms), with a comfortable twin bed. The bathroom was fairly standard tiny French economy hotel issue: getting to the shower required a bit of wiggle to get between the sink and the toilet, but all of the fittings were new, and there was very good water pressure and plenty of hot water. Small cable TV with channels in most European languages worked well. Closet was an alcove, but with plenty of hangars.
I didn't eat breakfast at the hotel, but the breakfast room itself is lovely and large, with large windows facing the street. During the day it's used as a lounge, with a large flat screen TV. Candy and current periodicals are available, as well as some guide books.
The staff were generally quite pleasant (I speak French, so can't vouch for English skills). There's no night clerk except for on weekends, which was fine with me as I found the night clerk less pleasant than the remainder of the staff.
There's some construction work going on nearby, and the noise from that starts fairly early in the morning. Not a problem for me, as I was going to work early each day, but possibly an issue if you're on holiday.

This is a 2 star French hotel in a superb location right in the center. The room was smallish but cozy we had a separate bathroom with a shower and WC. not too much storage room but we managed. The room was clean and the staff were very helpful. It was perfect for us at a reasonable price.

We spent a wonderful weekend in Bordeaux at the hotel de France. The owners of the hotel are charming, extremely helpful, caring and attentive and we really appreciated this. It was like being at home.
The rooms are pleasant, spotless and bright. The hotel is perfectly situated being in the very center of Bordeaux. We loved our stay there.

From the outside this hotel looks very nice, a nice compact reception, located in a good part of town, a friendly welcome. We booked here for one night. When we booked she asked for our card details to hold the room, but she did not mention taking a deposit or charging us up front.
On arrival we were two hours early but were told the room was available. Please note that this hotel has no lift and it is a minimum climb of two flights of very narrow stairs - not ideal if you have any luggage.
We were shocked to see that the room was tiny, dirty and desperately in need of redecoration. Like something out of a holiday nightmares programme. This hotel obviously ensures that their public areas lead you to wrongly assume the rooms are of a similar standard. While we were standing in the room discussing whether or not we should reject the room there was a very quiet knock at the door. I opened it and a very shifty looking man tried to put his head inside the room to look around in it, his eyes darting everywhere. He then said sorry wrong room and pointed to keys with another room number on it and left. I was somewhat spooked by this as why would he be knocking if he had a set of keys. I then noticed that the door had no security devices on it apart from the main lock, and we decided that it was not somewhere we would feel safe staying in.
We returned to reception and explained our fears. The women behind the desk (who had been so pleasant when we arrived) became very irate and tried to suggest that the man was not a hotel guest but was a tour guide for some Russian "students"! She got angrier when we said we were not happy with the room. No alternative was offered by her. She then started telling us that we would have to pay for the room anyway. At this point her husband turned up and starting insulting me too. We immediately left the building and told them that we were not willing to pay for substandard accommodation. Bear in mind that it was still about an hour before our official check-in time.
On return to the UK it has emerged that the hotel made an unauthorised charge on my credit card for the room after we had left the hotel. Having ready many other reviews which also describe people being charge for extra nights after leaving the hotel because of how poor the rooms are I would suggest that this place is best avoided at all costs.
Beware the initial warm welcome - this place is horrible!

We stayed for a long weekend in the Hotel de France and I can throughly recommend it. The hotel is very well located on a quiet street in the heart of the old quarter, just minutes away from the shops and an easy walk to the main sights. Yes, the bedroom was small, but it was clean and comfortable with a pleasant shower room. The breakfast was excellent and the staff were friendly and helpful. We will definitely be back.

We loved this quaint hotel in the center of Bordeaux. The room was clean and the bathroom was big compared to most 2 ** hotels in Europe.
What makes the place special though is the staff who were extremely friendly and even willing to help us book tours at the local vineyards.
We plan to stay only one night but we ended up staying 3 nights!

We stayed here for 4 days. Excellent central location. Only problem was the stairs. We had heavy luggage and didn't realise 2nd floor was actually the 3rd floor. Have stayed in French hotels before so understand the older ones won't have a lift. Very small room and very hot but adequate for our purposes. Comfortable bed but tiny shower. It would be less comfortable for more than 4 days stay. Nevertheless good value for money in such an expensive city.

We enjoyed the benefits of being in a large room, with free of charge cot, for our 20 month old. The location was so central that we found interesting things to see within a few minutes walk.
The central location means that there is noise at night, from people and midnight rubbish collections. However we used ear plugs and our daughter slept through it so it didn't bother us.
The bathroom was small but had a good shower and had got water when ever we needed it. The staff were friendly and helpful.
We didn't try the breakfast.
