We stayed at the Cardinal for 4 nights in mid-October. It was a wonderful stay. It was our first time in Bordeaux, and we couldn't have asked for a better introduction to this beautiful city. The Cardinal is located right downtown and is close to everything: the more upscale shopping area, the St. Catherine more average-priced shopping, the St. Andree cathedral, and a short walk or bike ride away from most everything else. We rented bikes several times from the short term rental bike stands that are all over the city, including close by the hotel. We also had a car for part of our stay and used public parking in one of the nearby garages - very convenient and relatively cheap.

The Cardinal itself is cute as a button. Very discreet from the outside, it's easy to miss. Right inside the door though you will be greeted by some of the nicest hotel staff I've ever experienced. They always had a smile on their face and were always eager to please.

The breakfast in the hotel works a bit differently than in most other hotels: they don't have a breakfast room, so by default breakfast is in your room. They would come up with a cart, lay out a white table cloth on the table in the room, and then set the table beautifully.

If and when we come back to Bordeaux I won't waste time looking for any other hotel. We'll be staying at the Cardinal.

We loved the hotel. It’s in the perfect location for the old part of town with tons of restaurants and cafes around it. The room was extremely comfortable, clean and modern but with old world charm. Breakfast is delivered to your room and was delicious, we added eggs to the breakfast which were delicious. The staff is really friendly and helpful. We took the #1 bus from the train station and it dropped us off minutes from the hotel, you can also take the tram which involves a transfer (quite easy to do once you understand the tram system). The only thing to keep in mind is this is literally a hidden gem/diamond. Finding the hotel at night isn’t easy, it doesn’t have a “hotel sign” outside just a tiny letter-sized poster that advertises its rooms and room rates. So take note of its address as that’s the only way you’ll find it (like i say it’s literally hidden). We would definitely recommend the hotel.

Hotel Cardinal Bordeaux is a beautiful all-suite boutique hotel located on a quiet street in the city center. It is walkable to all the main attractions (literally around the corner from the cathedral and Tour Pey-Beyland). I like to walk so the 40-minute walk to La Cite du Vin was not a problem for me. My suite was spacious and lovely. The staff was top notch (courteous, friendly, helpful). They arranged my private vineyard tour. They made great recommendations for restaurants. The hotel also offers Clarins products in the rooms which is what I use so that made me happy. A lovely touch is the handwritten notes and yummy goodies they leave in the room every night. They provide umbrellas by the front door. It's the little things you know. I can’t say enough good things about this hotel. I’d stay there again in a heartbeat.

For those who might care, they do not have a restaurant on site. That didn’t bother me because I typically don’t eat at a hotel. They do offer breakfast in the room but I never tried it. I loved walking to the corner boulangerie Jocteur to get my croissant and cafe au lait.

This was our first trip to Bordeaux, we have a 5 year old daughter and also took our pet. We wanted something close to the key tourist sights, town and staying in a quality place. Our stay at Hotel Cardinal was lovely. We didn't realise how central it was to town and everything was within walking distance. Public transport was also super close - in fact we caught the tram to and from the station (way easier than even getting an UBER).
On arrival we had some gifts for our 5 year old which was a great start and came in handy to keep her occupied. We did have trouble with our aircon and they moved us immediately to another room - no trouble. The service was outstanding, nothing was too much. Breakfast was set up on our table in our room and was lovely - great quality, clarins products, fresh towels. The room menu had an extensive wine list which was great. I would also say that this is really a boutique hotel or apartment hotel. Great quality fittings and rooms but no common areas.. so just something to keep in mind. We would definitely stay again.

I absolutely, positively loved the Hotel Cardinal! For me it hits the sweet spot of a really lovely place that is unfussy. As far as I can tell, it’s an apartment building that has been converted into a hotel. There’s not really a lobby, there is a small space, but it’s not really a place you can spend more than 2 minutes in. There are no further property amenities, no gym or pool. What there are are top notch, 5 star polished “rooms”, and incredibly attentive staff. I’ve out rooms in quotes because we had a 600+ square ft apartment, plus an outside deck. We had a substantial kitchen, while we didn’t cook, it’s pretty fantastic to have a dining room table that could seat 6, so we weren’t squeezed around a tiny table. We worked at that table, hung out, and had our simple breakfasts.

A few negatives, the hotel doesn’t have parking, they do tell you where reasonably priced parking is located, and it’s a few minute walk. But when you’ve driven in from far away, figuring out both where the parking lot is, then finding the hotel, dropping my family with luggage was still not ideal. Also, our room had low ceilings is significant portions of the space (3rd floor).

That said, these were the only negatives, the finishes truly spared no expense, I’ve stayed in Ritz Carltons with less. The design choices are a mix of modern and classic (mostly modern), but everything was truly lovely, and functional, not just pretty. They put books in the shelves, and we all actually opened them up at some point because they were actually cool, interesting. The staff just couldn’t be nicer or more helpful, both before arrival, and after. It’s really hard to define what this experience is, it doesn’t feel like a hotel, it feels like an Airbnb, but with support, and a guarantee that the place will be exceptional. The polish of the room, the amount of space we had, unfussy support added up to an ideal stay for me, and my family.

Centrally located across the road from Cathedral St Andre and just a few minutes’ walk to stops for two of the city’s four tramlines. My Mauriac Suite on the ground floor looked onto a terraced garden and was extremely quiet. Well decorated, a classy mix of modern and classical. The bed was wonderfully comfortable, and there is a modern bathroom with a hot, strong shower and a lovely small kitchen with everything you need for a few days’ stay. All impeccably clean. Without exception the staff were extremely friendly and helpful, and all spoke English very well. Overall, a delightful experience and very highly recommended.

The room had a strong odor of sewer gas. The expensive continental breakfast was served with stale bread and a fruit salad of consisting of only sliced bananas and diced kiwi. In addition, no one was at the front desk on two occasions when our key wouldn’t unlock the front door and we were forced to call the hotel to be let in from the street. For a cost of almost $400 a night, we will never return to this hotel.

Wonderfully welcoming and friendly staff with clean and spacious suites. We enjoyed our micro-kitchen with dining area off from the living space, separated from the bedroom. Perfect for breakfast or a place to catch up on emails or a work-cation. The breakfast was high quality, and I especially enjoyed my coffee with hot with croissants and jam. Luxurious Claris bath products left us feeling fresh and stylishly fragrant when we set off every morning for a day of leisure or wine tastings.

Five star in everyway - impeccable attention to detail! The staff was highly accommodating, even going out of their way to schedule, cancel and reschedule chateau visits. The breakfast...don't even get me started - it is delivered to your room and set up with a white tablecloth and white cloth napkins (get the slow coffee and drink it pure, it is exceptional). As a matter of fact, we slept in one morning and woke up to breakfast all set up in our room! The only thing I would change about the breakfast is the options - it got a little monotonous having the exact same thing every morning (we stayed for 4 breakfasts). The bathroom amentiies are Clarins products and smell like a spa. They gave us a goodie bag of samples to take with us! The location is perfect, just a few doors down a side street from the main cathedral.

The hotel was very conveniently located to walk to the local restaurants, attractions or to catch the tram to those which were further afield.
The staff were very friendly and helpful. There were some extra little touches provided that elevate the hotel to the next level, and they were appreciated.
We stayed in the Leopold suite and it was handy to have a kitchenette, even though we didn't cook. The room was a bit dark as it is painted dark green and faces into a coutryard/light well, so there is no view.
I am happy to recommend this boutique hotel.
