The Hillgrove Hotel & Spa appears to be a hit among guests for its spacious, clean, and comfortable rooms, although there are occasional remarks about noise and the need for updates. The atmosphere earns high marks for its welcoming vibe and tasteful decor, enhancing the overall experience. Cleanliness is a standout feature, with the hotel's pristine condition often highlighted. While the amenities, including a pool and kids club, are a draw for families, opinions on value are split, with some guests considering prices steep. Service is predominantly commended, despite a few noted lapses.

Wonderful overnight day in this lovely hotel. We availed of the midweek D/B/B offer at €109 pp, this even included a lovely glass of wine or beer! Incredible value especially as the 2 course dinner from a fairly extensive menu was most enjoyable & well presented. I cannot speak highly enough of the wonderful staff who obviously put customer satisfaction as a key component of their job. The bedrooms were spotless, spacious with comfortable beds & a fan provided in the event of the room being too hot. As we stayed during the glorious weather last week, this was greatly appreciated!
The leisure facilities were excellent & well maintained by welcoming & helpful staff. My only concern was that despite the presence of nonslip floor cover in places, I found that I had to gingerly walk about in my flip flops. Breakfast the following morning was served to you from a well presented buffet & on lovely warm plates!, a major change from many other hotels whereby it is a ‘free for all’ at the buffet station with only barely warm plates available. Well done to all at the Hillgrove Hotel. I will be back & have already recommended you to others!

Loads of parking. Beautiful decor in this hotel which was very clean, warm and comfortable. The robes in the bedroom made it an easy experience to head to the leisure centre which was well equipped. We used the Spa and the therapists were very professional, friendly and exceptionally competent. Very good facilities in the thermal suite.
The location is good in terms of proximity to the town which is within walking distance but Monaghan has adequate parking facilities if you prefer to drive. Lots of forest walks in the vicinity and not far from Armagh for a visit to the Planetarium.
Wonderful staff in this hotel who paid attention and went above and beyond to ensure a comfortable stay. Having multiple allergies it can often be very difficult to find meals with any variety. The chef took my list of allergens and prepared different meals for each day of our stay. Amazing service and would definitely recommend this hotel.

I was disappointed when we came as I had read the previous reviews and most had seemed very positive especially when it comes to family bookings. Our check in was impersonal and no sign of kids welcome packs that I had heard so much about in other reviews. The girl didn’t even guide us to where to go for food or for breakfast the next morning, simple omissions yes but they make your stay a lot easier when you don’t have to ask someone how to get everywhere.
Parts of the hotel are very grubby and hard to navigate. Sometimes you would step out of a lift and there would be no sign as to where you need to go. We were unimpressed with the lack of changing facilities at the leisure centre. To have to walk through a busy hotel in swim gear and a dressing gown is hardly what you’d expect from a 4 star facility. I understand that these changes were made because of Covid but after almost 3 years I don’t know of many other places still following the guidelines so stringently.

We ate in the room opposite the bar both evenings of our stay as with two small kids it was easier than finding somewhere else to go. Food was very tasty both nights with decent portions. Our first evening we ordered our food before 7:10pm and didn’t receive our food until almost 7:50pm. Our waitress (who was very nice) came by three times and seemed shocked we hadn’t received our food and went to hurry it along. In the end my husband went to the lady who seemed to be in charge to ask what the hold up was. On the second evening our food arrived promptly.

I found a lot of the staff had no idea where different amenities were in the hotel and so couldn’t help me when I asked for directions. There could have been a lot of seasonal staff on as it was Christmas but I think it’s a measure of good management that all staff are well versed in the hotel layout. Reception couldn’t help with kids club questions and when I eventually got info from reception as to how to get to the playground I was told I couldn’t access from inside the hotel and had to go outside and open an emergency exit gate by squeezing my hand through the bars to open (was told to do this by reception!) We used the kids club for our 5yo for one hour (scavenger hunt) He really enjoyed himself and the girls were lovely.

I’d like to note that the swimming pool was lovely, very nice and warm and very suitable for kids and adults alike. Our room was small but very clean and the cleaning lady was very friendly and helpful when we required extra milk, etc.

All in all there are definitely lots of things the hotel could do better, Monaghan town itself is well worth a visit and I would consider returning in future if the Hillgrove improved on the points that I mentioned above.

We got a very warm welcome when we arrived and our room was lovely. A very comfortable bed and nice fluffy towels.
The Hotel has a ‘clean the planet, not my room offer’ with 5 euros dining credit slipped under your door every day you avail of it. This is a very responsible and sensible thing to do in our current climate crisis, and they are to be commended for it.
The location is excellent, easy to walk into town, and the Greenway is on the doorstep. The local forest park is superb, the hotel should make more of a point to promote these.
The food both at breakfast and in the restaurant was very good and the wine was reasonably priced.
The leisure centre was good, and they are upgrading the changing rooms so it’s a nice facility to have use of.
All in all, we had a lovely stay and will definitely go back.

We stayed 1 night B&B for the Jimmy Carr show. I was delighted to see Jimmy was performing at local hotels instead of big city arenas. He was really good. Check in was excellent and the girl told us the doors open at 7pm for the show. We dropped our bags up into the lovely big bedroom and had a drink at the bar before the show. The hotel was very busy and there was a girl playing piano in the lobby area. We headed over to the show room and got our seats early, nice and close but not too close! My husband went to one of the bars and it was slow going. There seemed to be 3 bars in operation within the function room but really long lines. You would think an hour would be plenty of time for everyone to get a seat and a drink. During the interval I went to the toilet but didnt attempt to go near the bars so was very hot and thirsty during the second half. There was bottled water provided in our room and beds really comfy with option of opening windows. The walls must be really thin as we could hear our neighbours at 4am, wont say what they were doing but we could hear EVERYTHING! Breakfast was really good, we prebooked 830am and it was quiet. Buffet spread hot and cold really fresh and you could even make your own pancakes! Check out was easy and on our way out we noticed the coffee shop was open with some great looking peacan pie! Might try that next time

Our trip to the hillgrove started great as we booked ourselves into the spa on arrival and the girls were extremely accommodating, friendly and professional. Unfortunately things went downhill fast from here. Service from most (not all) in the bar was awful, from being ignored to staff on there phones at times it was shocking. Next day my key card stopped working after we returned from a walk in the local park as my girlfriend, so I had to go down to get a replacement and leave her at the door. I was told when calling reception the week before that tables were first come first serve, which was not the case, but unluckily for us they were not busy. No drinks order taken and we were sat there for about 25 mins before somebody came near us. Said we would go to a bar for a drink where there was kids running around until approximately 11.30 pm, and also a man playing that wasn't very good, but was extremely loud. Was told breakfast was stopped serving at 10.45 am on check in, so went down at 10.35 am the Sunday morning only to be told hot food was no longer being served, so grabbed some pancakes, and fruit. We were sat down for about 5 mins when a female restaurant manager came over asking for the table back, when I went on to explain what we had been told about food being served until 10.45 she became very patronising. I would go for the spa experience, but leave straight away afterwards.

Been going to hillgrove for 10 years.
The leisure complex is badly run down .
Lockers damaged , tiles broken all over in the steam room and showers are really poor.
This is my 2nd time in a year going for two 40th birthday celebrations and no notice that facilities like outside hot tub not working
And other facilities not working.

The lack of communication is poor when
Customers paying a lot of money to be let down when they arrive to find that facility’s not available.

Love the hillgrove and it’s sad I won’t t be back
