A delightful Haven of authentic Scottish highland hospitality since 1695 , The Moulin Hotel embraces a warm and welcoming world of peace, tranquillity and traditional Scottish hospitality. Perfectly sited in the village square of Moulin, an ancient Scottish waypoint, the hotel sits peacefully just 3/4 of a mile away from the bustling and perenially popular tourist town of Pitlochry.

I stayed at this hotel for two nights in September. I was visiting the Pitlochry for a family party which was a couple of miles from the hotel. When I arrived I was greeted by Gill at reception. I was told my room was up a few flights of stairs (it was also the furthest from reception) and I have a disabled hand so said I wouldn't be able to manage to carry my suitcase etc up to my room (there was no lift). Gill asked a member of staff to help and this lovely fella (sorry I did not get his name) carried my suitcase up for me. The hotel was built in 1695 and it feels like it! It was part of the charm. I had no complaints about my room. If it was cold there were plenty of heating options including bedding, a heater and a heated towel radiator in the bathroom. There was a TV and all the other normal hotel things you may need. Wifi was only ok and I found my phone's 5G data signal was much better than the wifi. I was not aware of any other noise going on in the hotel and it was very peaceful despite being fairly busy. During the evening when myself and friends returned to the hotel, we had some drinks in the bar and spoke to Gill and Fiona. They were great fun and also very knowledgeable about the hotel and area. The breakfast was great and Gill (who appears to wear many different hats) served it. She was lovely and very hard-working. Nothing was too much trouble. She is a wonderful asset to the place. On Sunday, after staying the second and last night myself and family came down to breakfast and there was a different lady serving it. She didn't seem to be in a very good mood and was frosty, and unfriendly and my family and friends felt a little scared to ask for anything. Not sure what was going on there. I guess we all have off days. All in all, I would recommend this place. it was amidst beautiful scenery and whilst there hundreds of serious ramblers were all over the place enjoying the highlands. I fell in love with Pitlochry and will certainly return one day.

I took my wife to the pub bar at the hotel. The gluten free options were small but she found something new to try which was delicious. I tried their Orkney Scampi which was tasty and lots of it. For dessert she ordered a gluten free sticky toffee pudding and was served by a young man and as she took a spoonful , Melissa our server stopped her and said 'that does not look like our gluten free one. ' She whisked it away and replaced it with a delicious gluten free one. She was full of apologies and a short time later a chef from the kitchen came and apologised for his mistake. There was no problem with us as Melissa stopped anything unpleasant happening and we were grateful. Thank you Melissa as it would have caused my wife extreme pain and suffering. It was so reassuring that in such a small place that such care is taken and staff being so pleasant and the food was excellent and not expensive. Accidents happen. A pleasant evening even with the amount of local residents and their dogs in the bar was not unpleasant. This is a centre of the community hotel with a great selection of food and drinks. It really is worth a visit and we really enjoyed our visit and will return in the future. Thank you to all the staff.

Scored three because the beer and company were excellent. Sadly the occasion was spoilt by the unfriendliness of the staff who shoed us out to ‘enjoy’ our drinks in the cold as we weren’t eating, despite tables then becoming available. We would have been more than happy to have given them up for full diners and did contemplate ordering a portion of chips to qualify for such indoor luxuries. Sadly won’t be back to try the fare without a warm duvet coat.

On a recent visit to Pitlochry, I was looking forward to having a meal at the Moulin Hotel. The menu looked good as was the traditional setting. How disappointed my wife and I were with the meal. I started with the Cullen Skink, which had good flavour but was spoiled with very hard pieces of potato in it. We both followed with the slow cooked casserole of venison. Oh dear !! Mine, while edible, lacked any flavour which you would expect. My wife could not even cut any of the meat far less eat it. The staff apologised and after checking in the kitchen confirmed that the cut of meat served up was not acceptable. A very disappointing experience. We won’t be back.

Hotel accommodation is good Selection of foods traditional and local cuisines is dog Friendly good value for money not the cheapest. Can get busy at times so waiting for food can be lengthily (The waiters advised us so we knew what to expect). Good selection of beer and malt whiskies.

I should caveat this review with the Covid restrictions in mind. Not easy to offer the best service. With a heavy heart i say The Moulin Hotel is not good enough. I can only imagine what Gordon Ramsay would say. I want Pitlochry to be the best holiday destination in Scotland. It’s also the heart of Scotland’s abundant food larder. But the hotels in Pitlochry other than the Fonab are in my experience all utterly living in the past. This hotel couldn’t be in a better setting in the Heart of Scotland . Why then do I rate it poorly. It starts quality of reception, moves into quality of bedroom accomodation and finishes with quality of food. Even for a three star hotel none of these are good enough. To be fair the managers and staff are trying their best but this could be so much better. Take the Welcome at reception seriously . Refurbish all the bedroom accomodation, ditch the squeaky beds and sort the acoustic separation, squeaky floors with a complete modernisation. Ditch the tartan and flock wallpaper and prepare freshly cooked Scottish food as they do at so many better hotels. Visit Gleneagles or the Fonab for an example of a great breakfast. Visit the Old Mill for great food. Sorry. Please aim higher and better.

Response from Clara Tomlinson, Owner at Moulin Hotel
Responded 19 Oct 2020
Hello there, Firstly having read your review I believe you very much so choose the wrong hotel for your required standards. I'm unsure how you can possibly compare a 3* 1695 Coaching Inn/Pub to Fonab and Gleneagles, both five star establishments. There is a reason you would pay £110 for a night with us in comparison to £300-500 a night at Fonab and Gleneagles minimum. I can say on behalf of ourselves and the majority of other hotels in Pitlochry that we focus on good traditional Scottish hospitality which is what the majority of our customers are looking for, no frills attached. For those looking for a more luxury vacation they do indeed book into Fonab. Also being a family owned and run hotel there simply is not the money to do a "complete refurbishment" which would take away from the traditional character and many original features of our Inn which is what brings thousands of people a year into our premises. You may have noticed that our reception, dining room and public areas have in fact just undergone a refurbishment whilst keeping the hotels character and these were progressing throughout the upstairs of the hotel when lockdown begun and obviously now we have to get back on our feet before we continue these. On speaking to our manager on duty when you checked out you stated everything was fine apart from the restrictions being more strict than when you initially booked, unfortunately this is the Scottish Governments control and not ours. Regarding your food choices which I believe was Macaroni Cheese served with Chips and a Wild Game Curry perhaps if you were looking for a more upmarket dining experience you could've chosen something else from our extensive menu. Thank you so much for your negativity in these hard times and I hope next time you do pay £300+ for your hotel to meet your standards rather than criticising a small Inn which never advertises to be anything different to what it is and certainly not 5* but with staff who do provide 5* friendly service who go out of their way to look after our customers, many of whom come back time and time again.

The prices were very high and the quality of the food just average. (The menu is unexciting) I ordered scampi and chips and they were not served with tartar sauce and when I asked for some was given a small sachet. A glass of below average Zinfandel wine was over £7. A burger and fries was £17, the bacon flabby and the fries were clearly cooked from a frozen packet. The service was pretty unfriendly and at the end we were sitting with dirty plates in front of us for about 25 minutes before I decided to the head to the bar and ask for service. When the dessert menu was finally given to us the dirty dishes were ignored so we had to move them to another table. I’m giving two stars for the atmospheric cosy interior and pretty beer garden.

All the staff are very friendly and helpful, they try their best to for fill any guests special needs or requirements. The pub offers a very good choice of food and drink. I had the patty to start with, which is a generous portion and very tasty. Then for a main course, I had the stake pie with veg and mashed potatoes. It was very tasty. I finished off with ice cream and toffee sauce, very tasty. I sat out in the beer garden which had background music playing and had a friendly feel to it. All the serving staff wear face masks at all times. I especially liked the way the staff had decorated the front of the building with very nice flowers. I would highly recommend trying the Moulin Inn for either a drink or a meal. It’s great to know that with all the COVID-19 restrictions and being closed for the duration of the virus lockdown, the staff and the food is just as good as it was before lockdown.

We have just spent a most enjoyable 2 day break at this lovely Hotel just out Pitlochry, our visit was both business and leisure as I was conducting a wedding ceremony at another venue in Pitlochry. We were greeted with a most warm and genuine welcome by the lady at reception given our room Key (7) which suited our needs perfectly, we enjoyed a lovely bar meal in the (Moulin Inn bar) and the food was simply delicious, breakfast on both mornings was served perfectly with plenty of coffee provided. With special thanks to the great staff for making us so welcome. To other trip advisor reviewers please take a little time to consider what these hard working individuals have to deal with in regards to the situation that we all find ourselves in just now, people are most certainly not rude or show bad manners they are just trying to make sure that one they manage to keep their customers safe and deal with all the ongoing rules which changes on a daily basis.

What a fantastic place to stay!! Phenomenal views from a fantastic old building - dates back hundreds of years. Our room was a double with corner bath and shower over - with a view of Ben Vrackie and the burn running below our window. The food was excellent and the atmosphere and home brewed beer in the Moulin Inn (part of the hotel and supplied in part by its own brewery) was outstanding. However, what really makes this place stand out is the staff. I have never experienced such friendly and attentive staff who go out of their way to provide a great experience. A special thanks to Debbie who was a ray of sunshine this morning at breakfast and who brought my wife her handbag (after she had left it in the dining room). Simply fantastic - we will definitely be back here.
