Detailed Reviews
I stayed at this hotel last September with a friend for three nights and we found it to be an excellent choice. The small size of the hotel ensured that we received individual attention, the meals were delicious and in summary we were just delighted with the hotel and will be returning again this September. I have also recommended it to friends who are travelling to Scotland this year.

Have just spent another week at the Birchwood Hotel, Pitlochry. As usual the service was excellent. Viv and John go out of their way to make one's visit comfortable. They take into account that we all grow older and adjust the service they offer. They helped with a problem I had with my car. Another memorable stay with the Holmyard's.

We spent 2 nights here and loved it! The staff are very friendly and helpful. The rooms are spotless and nicely decorated. The hotel is perfectly situated in the centre of the town.

My husband and I are just back from a two night stay in this hotel. We had booked a superior room and were very surprised by how spacious the room and en suite were. Both were very clean and cosy and had extra touches such as shower gel and chocolate biscuits added to tea making facilities. There was a king size bed with extra pillows and electric blanket if required which all helped a good nights sleep.Breakfast was very good and plentiful and piping hot.We did not eat in at night so cannot comment on evening meal although there always seemed to be somebody in the dining room at night. The lounge had a real coal fire burning at night and drinks were reasonably priced.Overall the hotel was a great place for a relaxing weekend and we would not hesitate to return in the future.

Thanks Diana L for your delightful review. A fine start to the new season. It would be a great pleasure to welcome you back and tempt you to enjoy the evening meal.

We spent two nights bed and breakfast here recently during a week long tour of part of Scotland. This hotel is well situated at one end of the main road running through the town but being in its own grounds it was very quiet and peaceful.
The owners were very welcoming and helpful throughout our stay. We paid extra for a superior room which was very large indeed with a very comfortable bed (and the pillows were fine too!) and with a huge bathroom. Everywhere was very clean. It would have been nice to have had a couple of single chairs in the room to put clothes etc on (and there certainly was the room for them!)
I agree that the atmosphere is perhaps more suited to the more 'mature' guest but that suited us as we wanted somewhere quiet after busy days touring around. There is a small bar in the lounge and they do evening meals if wanted. We did not eat here but the menu looked very nice.
Breakfast was not buffet, everything was waiter served which made a nice change. The food was delicious and set us up for the day.
One thing I would perhaps recommend is that when you are doing your next refurbishment a new bathroom suite for that room would be a good idea, I have not seen that colour mushroom for many a long year!
A very pleasant stay and would happily return.

Stayed one night in a superior room which was very spacious and pleasantly furnished. Plenty of storage and a nice touch with twin electric blankets on the double bed. Hospitality tray provided, with fresh milk on request. Evening meal, ordered in advance was very good with four courses all well presented, sensibly priced wine list. Breakfast was also very good. However the bed, which was two singles fastened together, was so hard that we had a very poor night's sleep. This spoilt our enjoyment of what would otherwise have been a very pleasant stay.

My parents had stayed at Birchwood and recommended it to us, although they did suggest that it might be more suited to the more (ahem) mature guest. There is a slightly old-fashioned air to the hotel, for sure, and the sheer amount of patterned wallpaper is a bit mind-boggling: the décor certainly wasn't my cup of tea. BUT: everything was very clean and comfortable; the proprietors are extremely friendly and helpful; the breakfast was absolutely great. (If you like black pudding, you'll certainly like their black pudding: delicious, as was the porridge.) Recommended.

Hi Chris_Abram and thanks for your revue. Your comments following the word “BUT” are greatly appreciated. We're sorry the décor got to you and we'll bear that in mind when future redecoration is under consideration. However, the number of guests who return year after year suggests there are significant numbers who might just be happy with it as is.

clean tidy place not for the younger person, we booked for 2 night bb but was asked when we checked in if we would like evening meal and we said yes,we were asked for our order there and then as its cooked fresh which was fine. pillows were very soft and not comfy. we thought we would return until we saw what we were charged for that evening meal, it was £60.20 and in no way was it worth that not even with the 2 half glasses of wine added, i was asked to check my bill before we left but as i had no specks on i sayed it was fine otherwise i would have refused to pay that amount., so no we wont be back.

I am sorry that Doris 029's stay at Birchwood was not entirely satisfactory. We teat our guests' concerns with the utmost seriousness and, to this end, the Information folder in each room requests that they draw our attention to anything we can do to improve their stay. Moreover, I make sure that I greet every new guest at breakfast with an enquiry as to how their night has been - an invitation to point out any problems they have encountered and an opportunity for Doris 029 to request a change of pillows which would have been gladly attended to. However my recollection is that Doris 029 and her partner both just said their night had been "lovely". With regard to the “overpriced” dinner, the Birchwood, in common with many similar establishments throughout Scotland, serves a fixed-price, 4-course meal plus coffee/tea. Although almost every Trip Advisor review emphasises the excellence of Viv's cooking, not every diner (a tiny minority) feels able to cope with all 4 courses but none quibble at paying the fixed price. My memory is that Doris 029 and her partner only had 2 courses plus fruit juice and declined coffee or tea, which, of course, is not a cost-effective option, although they again agreed the food was "lovely". However I have to acknowledge that the implications of their choice was not adequately spelled out when they placed their order and they obviously assumed (but did not enquire) that ordering half the offered meal would result in a commensurate price reduction. In conformity with our aim to meet, or exceed, our guests' expectations I have made a refund of £20.00 to Doris 029's debit card. Many thanks to Doris 029 for drawing my attention to an aspect of our business that needed attention and has received it.

We recently had our annual break (our seventh) at the Birchwood Hotel in Pitlochry, and, as always, we had a thoroughly enjoyable time. A warm welcome, comfortable accommodation in a beautiful house in a lovely setting, hearty breakfasts, delicious dinners, a good choice of wines, and a blazing fire in the lounge when the evenings turn chilly -all these await you at the Birchwood, and at a very reasonable price. If you want the perfect base for exploring Perthshire, or just a relaxing break in peaceful surroundings, then I thorougly recommend the Birchwood. If you visit the Birchwood, I'm sure that, like us, you will be keen to return on a regular basis.

Thanks HDMCP - we appreciate your taking the time to write your reviews. We look forward to your next visit and, to whet your taste buds, we've got a new bourgogne which I think is even better than our previous one.
