2023 Travellers' Choice Best of the Best
Fingal opened in January 2019 in the historic Port of Leith as a unique addition to Edinburgh’s hotel scene following a £5 million development. This former Northern Lighthouse Board ship, begins an exciting new chapter offering beautiful cabins, dining and entertaining space. Developed by The Royal Yacht Britannia, Fingal’s 23 luxury cabins are each named after Stevenson lighthouses, inspired by her rich maritime heritage. Sleek corridors lined with lighthouse images lead to the choice of cabins, from a luxury cabin with access to the deck, a duplex cabin with comfortable living space or the stunning Skerryvore Suite with extensive outdoor space to relax and entertain. Carefully considered design offers the highest specifications of craftmanship and finish, with nautical touches and polished woods. Sumptuous Scottish leathers and the finest linens are in colour palates inspired by Fingal’s journey from land and sea.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

One of the reasons I chose to go to Edinburgh in the first place, was that I came across a picture of this fancy ship that was turned into a hotel, and I thought it would surely be fun. But the visit has exceeded all expectations! I was greeted outside and addressed by name, and I had to "fight" to be "allowed" to wheel in the suitcase myself (...being Norwegian, and a bit too reserved for such a degree of service-oriented behavior, you know!). Every person I've met has shown with their whole being that they will do their very best to ensure that I have an amazing stay at Fingal in every way possible. What's a bit unusual as a Norwegian is that the staff there seem so genuine, not just friend ly and helpful because it's their job to be. The ship itself is also very nice and elaborate, and if you like old ships and stuff, the staff is more than ready to tell you about Fingal's history. The food is very good, and it should be mentioned that they also make one of the very best Amaretto sours I've had (and I have a good basis for comparison...). So in conclusion: If you DON'T like high quality, nice cabins with large bathrooms, comfortable beds (and even better pillows), or having extremely pleasant people who make you feel very well taken care of, then you should stay far away from Fingal!!

Dear Jonathan G, Thank you for taking the time to review your stay onboard Fingal. We are delighted to read you enjoyed your stay with us. Our passionate and dedicated crew love sharing the story of Fingal with our guests, whilst providing the highest possible standard of service. Fingal was lovingly restored over a 5-year period, using only the finest materials sourced locally and from around the world. You will find lots of nods to Fingal's past as a Lighthouse Tender, such as the roped bannisters on our spiral staircases to the Telescope in our Bridge, which was kindly gifted to us. We hope to welcome you back onboard Fingal soon. Kind regards, Callum Rees Guest Relations Duty Manager

Fingal was very luxurious but we felt comfortable there. The cabins were spacious clean and had everything you could need. All the staff were so nice and helpful, they made recommendations too. Breakfast was excellent with a really good choice and great quality food, we also ate in the restaurant one evening which was a little expensive but so enjoyable. If u arrive by plane or train you can get the tram which stops right by the boat, very convenient.

My wife and I came here for a meal in August 2023. The food was amazing.we had salmon to start, steak as the main and a lovely desert. It was probably the best steak I've ever had. The setting was also nice. Very luxurious. We would definitely consider returning.

Slightly late review . Stayed in mid May for my 60th birthday. Had a duplex cabin which was really lovely. Pre booked champagne was chilled in the cabin for our arrival. The hand written card was appreciated as were the chocolates. We had cocktails and a lovely meal at night. Breakfast the next morning was spot on . All in all it was a lovely stay , highly recommend .

We had a superb dinner in the Lighthouse Restaurant aboard the superyacht Fingal. The ship itself is stunning, decorated in art deco style. The staff were extremely welcoming and friendly. Food was very good; the Tarte tatin was exceptional! Graham and his team provided top notch service. This place is well worth seeking out!

It’s said that first impressions count, and Fingal has certainly taken that to heart. I find it very irritating when checking into a hotel that I’ve stayed at several times before to be asked, after giving my name, “Have you stayed with us before?” This does not happen on Fingal. My wife and I first stayed in August 2021 and were so impressed with the friendly service, great food and amazing cabins we knew we would return the next time we were in the Edinburgh area. Unfortunately, due to matters beyond our control it was February this year before we made it back. When we arrived and I gave my name, the chap checking us in immediately said “Welcome back”, quite amazing and impressive after 16 months. That chap was Rui, and when we returned in July on seeing us, he even greeted us by name and remembered some of our preferences. It is obvious he enjoys interacting with and assisting guests as do his colleagues in Guest Services. Their service is first class, on arrival a member of Guest Services took our luggage to our cabin, Rui checked us in and then escorted us to the cabin. This level of service is maintained throughout the hotel with all staff members greeting guests with a smile & cheery word. We chose to eat in the Lighthouse Restaurant because although Leith has a multitude of eating places, some operated by well-known chefs, the chefs on Fingal can more than hold their own against them. The food was delicious and the service from Graham & his team was attentive but unintrusive. Fingal is a very special hotel and the staff, or should I say crew, make the guests feel special.
