I booked this hotel in advance because I am a legal and had to be in Birmingham Crown Court for a couple of days. An hour before check in a Lady calls to inform me I must have a letter from my employer identifying me and the reason for my travel. OK so we all support covid rules etc but really this should have been flagged up BEFORE booking. Yes they know if they did so no one would book. I stay in hotels all the time and no one has asked for a letter. The problem is that she was arrogant and genuinely could not care a less. No letter no stay. I asked her to call the company or email them for confirmation. Noway not her job letter or no stay. I told her I would ensure that all the companies I worked for were made aeawre never to book the Copthorne Hotel again. She said thats really no problem at all. She then informed Booking.Com that my card had been declined. IF YOU ARE A BUSINESS TRAVELLER AND ARE BUSY AND YOUR CO IS REMOTE WORKING AND YOU CANNOT GET A LETTER WITHIN ONE HOUR THEN DO NOT BOOK THIS HOTEL. INFACT NEVER BOOK IT AGAIN. I will ensure that all my companies never book this hotel again and goodbye arrogant customer services. PS Can you tell that I am annoyed ??

Response from Simon Doyle, General Manager at Copthorne Hotel Birmingham

Dear James, I'm very sorry to hear of your negative experience and we will work hard to better communicate the current government restrictions to all our guests. There is in fact a banner at the top of the Booking.com hotel page that clearly states the hotel will need additional documentation to validate identity, travel itinerary, and other relevant information to adhere to current government guidelines? This should be in place along with other measures at all hotels but I can't speak for any other establishments. The team call arrivals to ensure that this message has been seen, read and understood to prevent this from causing issues on arrival at the hotel where the team, unfortunately, face regular verbal abuse for upholding the government guidelines. Even though hotels are officially closed, like many hotels, there are still a number of people that try to circumnavigate the restrictions to stay for leisure purposes putting other guests and the team at potential risk. As a hospitality business, turning away guests is not what we have all been trained to do. The past year has been a huge challenge financially and having to understand and implement ever-changing guidelines and restrictions has been challenging. With the impact of trading, we run on efficient team structures, the health questionnaires and other documents that have to be completed add to the check-in process and it is the guest's responsibility to have the documentation available on check-in. I really wish things could be simpler but until the restriction are lifted, like many, we are doing our best to stop the spread of the virus by adhering to the current government guidelines. I will share your comments with the team as we do always look to better what we do and it's clear in this instance there should have been a better positive outcome if things had been dealt with differently. Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. Kind Regards Simon Doyle

Dear 291Lalitk, I hope you are well. Your recent review has been mistakenly posted to the hotel in Birmingham and not the property in Dubai. You may wish to repost this to the correct property or alternatively, I will pass on your comments. Kind Regards Simon Doyle General Manager

This hotel is in a perfect location for Birmingham city centre, within minutes of walking you can reach the station, broad st or the bull ring. Our room was perfectly sufficient for what we needed and even had a bath. I'd recommend this hotel for anyone looking for a city break.

After seeing the previous post about the Copthorne lacking in Covid response i felt i had to put things right with a review of my own. I regularly use this hotel as a base whilst i carry out my acoustic work at sites around the Midlands. I've stayed here 3 or 4 times since they re-opened in September and have felt safe on every occasion. From my experience the staff wear face masks at all times and there are sanitiser dispensers everywhere, notably outside the lift on every floor which is very useful as the lift is where i feel most at risk. Sanitiser is again provided in your room and the one way systems are simple to follow. Please continue to provide these services as it takes some of the stress out of working in an area of the country where coronavirus levels are high.

Excellent value. The room was very clean, with a great city view of the building work, offices etc. Although the work did start at 7am!! The hotel has plenty of hand sanitiser etc. and even a little personal bottle in the room. The staff were lovely. Breakfast was £10 and cooked to order. Had dinner at Dishoom a few steps away - excellent Indian restaurant. The only downside? The idiots who thought it was okay to flout the rules about wearing masks and using sanitiser when wandering around the hotel. Sadly, that was the vast majority of guests, at a time when Birmingham has a high number of cases and rising. Massively irresponsible but not the hotel's fault. Wouldn't hesitate to stay again and hope for better fellow guests next time!

Hi Cbh1978, Thank you for taking the time to review your stay. All the team is extremely pleased you enjoyed your time at the hotel and we really do appreciate your positive comments. As you will have seen during your stay we have plenty of signage advising all guests to wear masks and inform all guests checking in that we require them to wear masks at all times and we have masks available if a guest has lost or misplaced their mask. All the team attempt to enforce this as safety is paramount but has no legislative powers and are not able to force guests to wear their masks. The hotel has sanitization stations throughout the hotel and we have a robust cleaning regime focusing on increased cleaning of all the high touch point areas throughout the property. The hotel has had such positive comments regarding the measures we have in place and have had the majority of guests happily comply with COVID protocols and we will continue to do all we can to enforce protocols. I look forward to welcoming you back to the hotel in the near future. Kind Regards Simon Doyle General Manager
