Once again in Birmingham, UK, writing, researching, reading and reflecting across several areas of science and medicine. Quite a few amendments to go through. Feels quite daunting, but Shientist is getting right into it. Happy to have read over a few further grant ideas. Came across this accommodation and it's a welcoming plane. Nice working and cyclone trails. Room is little small, but cozy is not a bad thing. Nice Pod- like shower area. Secure portal to stairs and lifts system which is excellent for accessibility. Loving the art work and creativity around the shops and souk (markets) near by. Close to New Street Station. Shientist is all about linking healthcare for walkways and care pathways. Friendly staff, available to answer questions. Also arranged to meet up with student following viva-voce following dissertation submission. Always supporting best practice. The Ibis Hotel - a place for all, including key healthcare workers, LabZtorm scientists.

Stayed for three weeks here in Birmingham during lockdown, the location was excellent, everything within walking distance and the nightlife and shopping center. Unfortunately everything was shut around the area but the hotel staff were excellent, room.service 24 hours was extremely useful and they have on site parking. This was one of the cheapest hotels in Birmingham and I would say it's amazing value for money. The staff were extremely friendly and accommodating and I would definitely stay here again. WiFi was great and the TV channels were decent and the room service menu was varied.

The two staff members (man & woman) on at the evening reception of 30/11/20 were very Rude staff at the reception who are not really using common sense at all but just trying to act as the Covid-19 police before one enters their hotel as if they own the place. People were coming in dressed in their work clothes and showing IDs but the staff members were really not reasoning at all just saying you need to show a letter as proof of work to stay at the hotel???? People checking were really not impressed with their unreasonable attitude of clearly not bein able to clearly see and reason with people including my self telling them that we were at the hotel due to work purposes. would definitely not be staying at this hotel ever again.

As a regular guest of Accor Hotels throughout the UK I was surprised to be extremely disappointed with the Ibis Hotel Birmingham New Street; this was far from welcoming nor was it comfortable and I had issues relating to its COVID 19 procedures and protocols. Yes, the reception team were efficient and professional yet lacked that friendly touch, certainly were not the ‘superheroes’ or ‘The team .... prides itself on always going above and beyond’ that the hotel website portrayed the team as; I did not feel welcome, certainly not a valued customer and got the impression that I was just another guest number to process and forget. A demand for a fifty pounds room deposit came as an unwelcome surprise; not a normal practice is undertaken in my experience of Accor Hotels; why does this matter to me? The deposit can take up to twenty-eight days to be returned to a bank account which most undesirable. The location is central, not far from the New Street or Moor Street Stations, close to the main bus routes and the Digbeth Coach Station. Chinatown and the city’s gay district is on the doorstep as are the famous Bull Ring markets and the massive shopping centre; however, the exterior of the hotel and its surroundings are not the best I worried about my safety walking back the hotel on the evening of my stay. Onto the room; this was more akin to student accommodation than a three-star hotel, I have experienced far superior accommodation at an Ibis Budget or Travelodge which I would pay less for. The hotel website describes the hotel as:- ‘Inviting, modern and cosy, with a comfortable bed and a functional bathroom. The ibis room has got everything you need for a pleasant stay.’ In reality, the room was sparse, white walls and nothing much else, definitely not inviting or cosy; modern is stretching it a bit, more cold, uninviting and in need of an update. The television was mediocre, missing lots of the Free view channels, as for the website promise of satellite and cable TV not present; the Wi-Fi was very slow compared with other Accor hotels that I have stayed in (thirty minutes to download a small pdf file). The lack of bedside power was disappointing. The only chair in the room, a desk chair was extremely uncomfortable, sleep also not possible when the noisy room heater was in operation; you had no choice but to turn it off to permit sleep. The compact bathroom was nothing special and a tight squeeze. The towels resembled sandpaper rather than a pleasant fluffy experience. Make sure you have a mobile phone as the room telephones have been removed, again despite the website promise of this amenity; you are required to WhatsApp reception for any required assistance, which in my experience they ignore. My biggest concern was the hotel’s procedures and protocol relating to COVID-19, yes the hotel has made an effort to make the hotel compliant and safe; yet whilst the management has acted very well in some circumstances, like the social distancing and mask required signage in the reception area, yet there was no signage about the usage of the lifts as an example. Lots of the room amenities have been stripped out including all clothes hangers, all the hotel information including that concerning restaurant and bar I understand that this is to assist with the battle against COVID yet if this is the case why leave the hairdryer and have the spare pillows in multi-use plastic bags. Unfortunately, the overall impression I got from the Ibis Hotel Birmingham New Street was very poor, the management gives the impression that they can use COVID as an excuse for the lack of customer service and provision of amenities, seeming to believe that as the quest is paying less they do not need to provide the normal levels of service or amenity. Finally, this is, without doubt, the worst Ibis Hotel I have stayed in. Just to add. I sent this review prior to posting to the hotel management to allow them to comment. I never heard from them, just confirms to me the level of customer service and respect.
