#7 of 91 hotels in Newcastle upon Tyne
Travellers' Choice
A grand house with contemporary style, a leafy setting near the heart of the city. Jesmond Dene House is neither a townhouse nor a country house hotel. It's simply 40 well-designed bedrooms and suites in a richly historic building offering understated luxury and rather good food. Overlooking the wooded valley of Jesmond Dene, the privately owned hotel guarantees peace, escapism and a refreshing change. Newcastle's city centre, however, is only a five-minute drive. The hotel recently received 4 red stars and the AA Hotel of the Year 2008-2009. Our restaurant Fern is an upmarket neighbourhood Dining Room and Bar, with generosity and the highest standard of produce at its core. Our food is; contemporary, non-fussy, and prepared with love, care and attention. We offer relaxed, informal Geordie hospitality, and memorable dining experiences. Ferns uncompromising approach to the finer details of hospitality makes Fern the ideal place to, meet, eat, drink & celebrate.

We stayed here before and after a operation at nearby hospital. The service and staff were excellent. We were given a change of room as I couldnt walk as unwell. The food room and staff was very good. We had personal service to help us and nothing seemed too much trouble. Every member of staff was pleasant , helpful and did everything to make our stay comfortable. ,many thanks for your kindness.

Stayed Friday and Sat night and have to say was hugely impressed. The gardens are beautiful, the buildings stunning and the rooms unbelievbly oppulent and comfortable. I can wait to return. I also ate in the Fern restuarant and the food and service was michelin star standard! I can't recommend the hotel and restuarant highley enough.

What a hotel. The staff were incredibly friendly, the building and finish just stunning, room was phenomenal view a lovely view of the grounds and the dene (often you go to a hotel and a pokey shower with poor water pressure and 3/4 bath leave you disappointed, but this was the best I have ever stayed in). We had a meal in the fern restaurant on the Friday night and the food was absolutely out of this world. Sommelier had fantastic knowledge and insights on the perfect wine accompaniments. Could not recommend the place more highly.

A lovely converted grand house - comfortable, clean rooms, with modern facilities. Well-appointed bathrooms with welcome touches like heated towel rails. Service in bar/lounge area was hit-and-miss, albeit it well-intentioned - sandwiches were dreadful, drinks were fine.

The suite was well decked out, very comfy, everything you would expect. Excellent toiletries and very comfy bed. Lovely to arrive to the music already playing and the room lit and cosy. Final touches are amiss… stray body hairs left in the shower tray, two bathrobes in the closet - one white and fluffy, the other cream/grey/well worn and sandpaper rough, balcony/deck needs a light/working light to enjoy the balcony paid for etc The staff are attentive, friendly, a little too rushed to take your order for food while having just ordered pre dinner drinks. Slow it down and don’t stress your guests! Lots of similar comments amongst the guests in the bar. The food was the most disappointing part of the stay. It was fine but nothing special. Quite one dimensional and not in keeping with the price range. The wine list is excellent as is the wine cellar on display. A wonderful hotel… needs the odd tweak here and there and a little consideration to the smaller important details.
