Detailed Reviews
Called here for an evening meal in the middle of the week. Booked a table and was served very efficiently by the owner who said she was from Bulgaria.( I had to apologise by asking if she was Polish!) Why do we always think everyone with an accent is Polish.
The meal was very nice and the decor was contemporary and classy. The only downside and this is not the owners fault is some of the other diners were scruffy, jeans and trainers and noisy. I avoid Whetherspoons and Pub grub establishments to get away from these types. The portions aren't big but they are served quickly and piping hot. Wine was expensive but in line with restaurant prices. Would visit again if in the area.

What a lovely place. We have called in a couple of times for drinks only but it’s always got a great vibe to it. Separate area for birthday parties etc which didn’t disturb anyone else. Great bar staff. Lovely furnishings. Clean. Would definitely recommend. Good selection of draught beers.

Just been to the Horseshoes for a light Sunday lunch (we have been several times before since it's refurbishment some time ago). As always a very friendly welcome and good service. We like the general ambiance of the Horseshoes whether you go for a drink, a snack, or a full meal --the place has a relaxed comfortable feel to it. The food is of a good standard --in our experience. Outside area for drinking and eating in good weather and welcoming log burning warmth when very cold outside!
Would recommend to all.

Newly moved into area and visited here for several meals. Always a lovely warm and friendly atmosphere and the food has been exceptional quality. Well done we will definitely be back again and again. Toilets accessible on flat ground floor and very clean and well stocked.

We booked to stay at the Horseshoes in Dorrington on Saturday 13th August 2016 on a personal recommendation. I apologise for the length of this review, but I believe it is necessary for you to understand the total situation.
We booked one night’s stay for a special occasion; my daughter’s wedding, being held in nearby Ratlinghope. The wedding was an early event so when we booked back in June, we cleared it with person who answered the phone, that we would be able to get changed in the room, to be able to leave the Horseshoes at 12.30hrs. As happens with most plans, it turned out that we were able get changed elsewhere without having to put the Horseshoes to any inconvenience.
Having been a hotel manager in my past working life, we felt it prudent to call into the Horseshoes, after a nearly 3 hour journey from our home in Newbury, just after midday, on our way to the wedding venue to let them know that we were in the area & still required the room that night, although we would not be arriving until about midnight. We were leaving our car at the Horseshoes, by previous arrangement, so that I, understandably, would be able to have a drink at the wedding since my disabled wife does not drive.
I spoke with a woman, who I now understand to be the owner, Tan Georgieva, after she had finished serving coffee to three ladies. I stated who I was & that we were booked in for that evening. She stated that the room was not yet ready, to which I replied that was not a problem but had just wanted to ensure she was aware that we had arrived & would be returning about midnight. Not a problem was her reply as she was working that night. Great I thought & I left to go & enjoy my daughter’s nuptials expecting to return some 12 hours later to an establishment that looked up to the standard I was expecting for the money we had paid.
After a very enjoyable afternoon & evening we returned to the Horseshoes just a few minutes after midnight. To our bemusement the entire establishment seemed to be locked up & closed. There were a few lights on downstairs so I naturally assumed that the woman would be somewhere in the building. Unable to find a door bell on any of the doors, apart from the one that stated Post Office, we knocked on the windows & on the door knocker at the front of the building. No answer. I then tried calling the Horseshoes on the phone, we could hear phone ringing inside but there was no sign of life. By now we were become more than a little worried, as a night sleeping in our car was not very appealing plus the temperature was dropping & we had not packed for outdoor sleeping. I couldn’t drive anywhere else since I was certainly over the limit. I tried calling on the phone at least 6 times thinking that perhaps the woman had fallen asleep. Nothing!!
We ended up phoning a friend, who came to collect us from a few miles away, and we were able to, sleep on her FLOOR as she only had a one bedroom apartment. After a very uncomfortable few hours of cat napping we stiffly returned to the Horseshoes, at 08.30, to find out what had gone wrong & to get a refund for the night we had not spent with them. Feeling rather exhausted, we were not ready for what we eventually were faced with.
The owner finally arrived just after 09.00am, she arrived with a face like thunder, looking totally ready for an argument. Unfortunately she was going to be disappointed because it takes two to argue & I was not prepared to get into a slanging match with anyone. I stated what the problem was that she had not been there the previous night as she had stated she would be. Her comment was that I should have asked for keys to get in if I was going to be that late & that she had been there until 23.30hrs the previous night & that she had told me that we had said we would be back by then. I reminded her that she had said that as she was going to be at the Horseshoes so there was no need for me to ask for keys & that she had made no mention of them. Her comment was then she thought I had seen her Manager & got keys from him. If that had been the case I replied why, would I need to find out that SHE was going to be there if I had some keys. Plus I stated a simple check would show that there were no keys given out to me.
She stated her manager was in the building until 23.30 which was the same thing as her being there & that is was totally my fault for not asking for keys to get into the accommodation. Needless to say I refuted this & requested a refund for the night we had not spent there as I consider it to be their fault. I also stated that I felt some form of compensation was in order since we had had to try to sleep on a hard floor through no fault of our own. My wife is disabled with metal plates in her back & uses a mobility scooter to get around & I have had Multiple Sclerosis since 1975.
She then disappeared to her office for about 10 minutes. When she returned she gave me an A4 sheet of paper folded in half with the money we had paid in the middle. She stated “There is your booking money plus a voucher to return here to stay one night in the future”. I took the money & put the voucher down on the bar & my response that there was no way would we be returning & that I felt that financial compensation was more in order. She did ask what I wanted & I stated the figure I considered to be fair. There was no attempt at finding any common ground & she stated that there was no way that she was paying that. My response was that I would sue. Her reply was “See you in court” We then left.
I have never come across an owner, who cannot accept any criticism or blame. It seems that it is the customer fault, not the establishments. I can understand not wanting to openly accept blame but I cannot understand blind stupidity, or treating your customer like dirt unless they accept your way of doing things & your opinion. How this was our fault I cannot imagine. The fact is that Ms Georgieva not once apologised for any possibly error, & she was already blaming us when she arrived. It was not her who offered the refund. That only came after I had asked for it.
I honestly believe that this establishment & its owner needs to be shown how to treat its clients with some respect. The point of being in a successful business is accepting that sometimes things go wrong but you must satisfy your customers. There has been no attempt on Ms Georgieva part to satisfy her clients here. Despite the offer of one night’s free accommodation in an area & place we were unlikely to return to.
Ms Georgieva the ball is in your court. You can still do the big thing & contact me to resolve this but somehow or other I don’t think this will happen.
My recommendation is, on the Horseshoe’s at Dorrington, if you enjoy bad service & a rude owner then this is the place for you. You are welcome to it.

Response from 210tan, Owner at Dorrington's Horseshoes
Responded 2 Sept 2016
Dear Sir I would like to make it clear for you and Everyone who is reading this-("This" because this is not a review, you actually havent stayed at the Horseshoes so you cant review the place)- what actually happened; You arrived at 11:45 at the Horseshoes to check in-Our official check in is after 14:00 so the room wasnt ready. You looked like you are rushing so you asked me if you can come after the wedding,The response was Yes you can but make sure you are shown to your room and you you have keys to enter the Premises ,So i pointed you the man behind the Bar,who was able to help you.You also asked me if you are fine with your parking and i Sad Yes.i havent seen you after that.Just to let everybody know there were another four rooms and the guests came earlier but they asked for their keys and to be shown to their rooms because they are expecting to be back after midnight. and our official check in is until 23:00. On the next morning i was at the Horseshoes at 9:00 and you were greeted by me saying Good Morning and the response was shouting at me and My Chef ,who even asked you very kindly to stop shouting and being aggresive to him.I APOLOGIZED three times and asked you if you would like more drinks or breakfast but you were only asking for cash compensation .So i run to the office and came back after no more than 2 min and gave you 70.00 pounds in cash and voucher for 100.00 to spend at the Horseshoes any time you or your family,or even sell it-but you started shouting at me that you want 200.00 pounds cash and if i dont give it to you you will take me to court.I do believe that you were still over the limit Sir,especually when you were swearing at me saying that i am from Abroad,Thats rasicam . Everyone know me in the area as a person who will do anything for everyone, and my customers are more than a friends to me,they are my life and i DO LOVE EVERYONE OF THEM.I am not english but my country is England and i love it. Once again i do realy feel sorry for the situation but being a Hotel Manager you should know the check in procedures and the Hotel Policies. Wish you all the best in the future and scaring people to take them to court is not the way to take some cash in hand,we live in England not in the Middle East. Best Regards

Overall, not really an experience to be repeated. Disorganised on arrival (check-in weren't sure who was in what room, so we were handed a number of keys and told to sort ourselves out). We also weren't told at check-in that there was no breakfast service (despite info in the room to the contrary - this info was then removed from the guest information folder when we were attending a local evening function) and were only informed that it would be a continental breakfast in rooms when we asked where we should go in the morning. This was cornflakes/muesli, juice carton with straw, apple, banana and longlife milk. Not what you expect for the price you pay and when full english breakfasts were advertised online. Also woken by the cleaner downstairs at 4:30am vacuuming and crashing up and down stairs.
Bed was extremely comfortable - no complaints there. Rooms furnishings were lovely and the quaint character of the sloping ceilings was cosy. Location ideal for local wedding.
When mentioning the lack/quality of breakfast at check-out, we were told that the online booking company should have informed us. When then highlighting that we weren't even told at check-in, there was a complete lack of apology as if there was nothing they could do about it.

This was our first visit to the Horseshoes, we were a party of 4 and all local.
The food was very disappointing, the soup was bland, and was lacking flavour. The main course mixed meat on the Sunday lunch menu comprised a small portion of very thinly sliced pork and beef, which looked suspiciously like sliced meat purchased from a butcher.
Overall poor value for money, and overpriced wine.
The only one in our party that was satisfied had Fish and Chips and that was OK.
Needless to say we will not return.

We came for a wedding in May and it was not a great experience at the Horseshoes. When we arrived, we had booked three rooms separately, but came as a group and they did not have one of our bookings. They gave us all rooms anyway, but one of my friends did not get the room that she had booked. When we came back between the ceremony and the reception to get cards and presents and things, they decided that it was at this point that they should get us to pay and so we were a little late for the reception. The worst of it, though, that I got very little sleep due to cockerels across the road and also the room being extremely light. Then, there was not a cooked breakfast available in the morning, and just cereal, UHT milk, and fruit to eat in our rooms. We went out for a lovely cooked breakfast elsewhere, but it was just not what we were expecting from the B&B.

I have recently moved to the area, and this week I had family stay in the Horseshoes. Firstly, I have to say that the pub facility and the food are both excellent, and I would highly recommend stopping here to eat and drink. However the bed and breakfast element of the establishment leaves a lot to be desired, and is very overpriced. The room itself was average, very small but nicely decorated, however the bed linen was stained and snagged. Breakfast was served in a small fridge in the corridor, and was comprised of a few pieces of fruit and some crusty croissants. My relatives were also instructed to exit via the fire escape, where there is a overwhelming pong! In the end, my relatives decided to leave a day early. This B&'B' charges hotel prices for a youth hostel service and experience. We were planning to use this establishment intensively over the next few months, however we will now be looking elsewhere. Highly disappointed.

Room was lovely, food is good but having an air conditioning fan whirring loudly away half the night right outside the bedroom window meant sleep was severely disturbed on the first night. The following night the cleaner came loudly crashing into the building at 4 a.m. and after emptying bottles into the recycling continued to vacuum the lobby! That and the reappearance of the air conditioning fan noise meant another night was spent tossing and turning.
Lack of staff on the premises overnight/first thing in the morning made checking out a bit of a farce.
Very disappointing!
