The Black Swan Inn, with its quirky old-world charm and historical ambiance, seems to resonate with travelers appreciating its low ceilings, beams, and the cozy allure of a large fireplace. However, some visitors have expressed concerns over a perceived dip in character and cleanliness in the rooms, which are otherwise comfortable. While the garden area adds to the inn's appeal, guests warn that the service can be unprofessional and slow. Additionally, many have found the food, drinks, and parking overpriced, which has led to some dissatisfaction regarding value.

Me and the missus recently had an overnighter at this place, we took our youngest son at his insistence (he and my wife had been a few weeks prior) It was full of character, the staff were helpful and nice and the price was hard to beat in the area.
We stayed in the cottage (name of the room not an actual cottage), the staff said it was their best room and I had to agree it was quite nice. I wasn't sure about the layout of the room but this is understandable in such an old building. We had a massive 4 poster bed and in the partitioned part of the room there were 2 singles. The place was operating with covid restrictions in place which I have to say, I hate, but I do understand the need for them and the staff made it very easy to stay socially distanced. We ate in the venue on the evening and in the morning, the food was excellent and very reasonably priced. Drinks were good value and while we didn't drink a lot, everything was table served and the young lady who served us was very helpful and couldn't do enough. I will definitely be going back as I thought it was a really nice place and york itself has loads to do.

The Black Swan Inn is a great pub I've been to a few times on previous visits to York, always had a great time and so it proved on our latest visit .
A classic 15th century timbered building, interior is superb ,an ancient looking serving bar ,many original features retained such as the beautiful fireplaces, etched glass windows and the like ,great decor and furnishings throughout this multi roomed pub and plenty of seating options, all in all a great pub to chill out in.
We were here on a Tuesday early afternoon ,pub had just opened and we were the first customers of the day so we could really appreciate what a fine looking pub this is ,greeted warmly by the barmaid,we had a study of their real ale's and my twin brother Stephen and I both opted to have Timothy Taylor's " landlord " , these pale ale's were served in excellent condition ,we kicked back ,chilled out and planned out the day ahead while sipping our ale's.
My pale ale was really good,a golden, crisp, well balanced pale ale ,hints of citrus ensuring a slight bitter finish to the taste which we both enjoy ,a classic British pale ale indeed,it was just so good being in such a great pub enjoying a quality real ale .
We both really enjoyed our pale ale's in here before we moved on and as on every previous visit to The Black Swan Inn we had a great time.
The Black Swan Inn is easy to locate along Peasholme Green.
Opening hours are;
Monday to Sunday ,open from midday.
A great traditional pub, most definitely well worth seeking out if you're in the area or planning to visit York.

Stopped by for a meal and drinks. The meals arrived in good time and were very reasonably priced. We all had different meals and they were all nice and large portions.
The only complaint We would have and the only reason we will not return tomorrow we sat for 2 hours outside and there was dirty dishes on tables when we arrived and those plus others who left just mounted up. It was attracting all the bees so instead of staying for more drinks we moved on.

We visited the Black Swan for an evening meal after a long day walking around York. We were greeted by a young lady and forwarded to one of the front rooms after being told the bar was busy (it wasn’t). We asked for a menu and sat down. I then visited the bar to get drinks but unfortunately due to covid they had no beer/lager or cider and could only offer bottled beer or wine. We understood and bought what they had and also ordered our food.
A good 35 minutes later our food finally arrived (odd as it wasn’t busy) and that was when we realised we had made a mistake. I had a burger of the day (cheese burger) my wife had a jacket potato with beans and cheese and my son had Mac and cheese. Simply good as you can see, Well not so. The burger was wrapped in a stale damp bun garnished with a limp piece of lettuce and a tasteless cheese. The burger was obviously cooked for half an hour because I had to use a steak knife to cut it after removing it from the bun. My sons Mac and cheese was a tasteless bowl of wall paper paste but in fairness was piping hot. The good news is my wife’s spud was ok, not that easy to mess up I guess. Anyway, we ate as much a as we could stomach and left. We suggest a new chef would be in order. Avoid.

Been to this pub several times in the last few years as they were famous for their pies.
We visited last week with relatives who were visiting York and we were so disappointed.
Only 2xpies on the menu-chicken and a veggie one. Don't bother checking menu online as staff told me when I rang up that it is not what they serve, so why bother having it online.
The pub may be very old but it is not clean.
The bar area smelt of drains, we sat in another room where the tables were not very clean and the seats we sat on were covered in stains.
We ordered food from staff which seemed as if they could not be bothered to serve you. It took ages to come and my wife had to ask how long after we had waited nearly 30mins.
When it did come it was ok but to be honest not worth what we were charged, the fish+chips in Wetherspoons at half the price is much better.
The chicken pie was a slice and not an individual cooked one.
A pint of Carling, £5.80-rip off.
Avoid this pub unless it improves drastically

Drove to the Black Swan in Peasholme Green York this evening 23/12/2021 with my partner and our son. We had already decided we would stay in the Black Swan for the evening. After 3 or 4 pints I asked the young barman if it would be okay to leave my car overnight and I would pick it up the next morning. I was told unless we were residing in the pub it would cost £8.00 to leave my car overnight but we would have free parking while we were drinking in the pub. Basically we were told to either pay an £8.00 parking charge or break the law and drive while over the drink drive limit. Whilst I can understand the need to stop people parking at the pub and then perhaps walking into town to drink elsewhere I would have thought having spent over £70 across the bar we would be allowed to leave the car at no charge. I would have thought that at this time of uncertainty with lockdowns looming common sense would have prevailed rather than expecting customers to break the law. Also the site on Trip Advisor states free parking. My family and I will certainly think twice before using this establishment again.

So my Nan had planned a lovely family get together for my mum’s 50th birthday meal. The food was lovely and we even met the gorgeous cat! Myself and a few from the party went into the smoking area and could hear barking, constant barking. I had a look into a nearby window to see if I can see the dog and didn’t realise that there was a separate flat (which I now know is the landlady’s flat.)

When we came back in doors we were chatting about the dog and a lady came back to clear the plates (which we had stacked up for her all neatly, making it easier for her!) basically had a go at us and told us to not wind up the dog and it will be her that gets ‘bollocked’… we literally didn’t even know what to say, with that we finished our drinks and left a lot sooner than we would’ve liked too.

It was my mum's 50th birthday and due to covid we haven’t had a lot of time with each other and it really did upset my mum the way that lady spoke to us. We didn’t want to stay anymore which is why we left quickly. Such a shame as we do love coming to your pub but we definitely won’t be coming back. The lady didn’t even acknowledge that we were leaving, she was stood with her back to us on her phone.

Message to the rude lady- learn some manners! I work in management and if my staff ever spoke to any of our customers the way you did, I would be mortified!

Me, my partner and children visited on 12/6/21. We firstly found the staff quite rude and didn't feel very welcome. We ordered drinks and I ordered a diet coke and it tasted awful either really cheap or like it had gone off so asked for a lemonade which was again horrible! No kids menus and not much choice. As we were waiting for our food a table next to us ordered some drinks and the man was trying to have a joke with the waiter to which he replied "I'm not in the mood for jokes mate I'm extremely busy!" thought that was uncalled for! When our food finally arrived it was horrible my toastie was smothered in butter and I couldn't eat it! The kids chips had so much salt put on already and my partners mixed grill wasn't much better! I complained at the end and the waiter gave me an email address. Emailed when I got home to find out it was the wrong email phoned up and was given a different email. No reply! Phoned up about 3 times to speak to a manager to be told she's not there and to ring back later. Needless to say will not be returning!

First time in this pub thought we would take advantage of the half price food. I had pigeon pie for something different as everything else on the menu didn't exist. The pie was fine but could of made an effort with something with it dollop of cabbage you would not have paid £10.00 for this and service was terrible plus empty plates all over which at this time should be collected straight away won't be rushing back.

So our first mini break in 9 months. We wanted somewhere with character, a bit olde worlde, with great reviews, and we found The Black Swan. There’s another inn that’s meant to have a haunted history, but having also visited there, we just didn’t get it. The Black Swan however looks the part, and feels the part! Great staff, really amazing breakfasts, comfy room, and a genuinely nice feeling throughout. Pretty sure local ghost Matthew had a little fun with us, turning our tv on twice and knocking on our wall one night, and moving the curtains around an ornament the next.
We stayed in Stag room, which was almost perfect. The one minor gripe would be the constant sound of a generator or aircon or similar outside. The wife managed to tune it out though.
The Black Swan is pretty much within 10minutes of everywhere you want to be close to, and has free parking!!! Will absolutely stay again.
