This hotel is so shabby it’s almost embarrassing……we had stayed here 5 years ago and don’t remember it being as scruffy as it is. For nearly £300 for two nights we had expected a little more luxury. We stayed two nights and originally booked a standard room. This room turned out it be adjacent to the kitchen extractor unit, we asked to change but we’re told there was nothing available facing away from the unit. So we bit the bullet and asked for an upgrade to a premier room for £30 per night. This gave us a room facing the cathedral but bizarrely with no drawer unit which had been in the other room. The mini bar had two small bottles of coke and two small bottles of water but no bottle opener. There was a Nespresso machine with espresso cups…milk and coffee sachets and a kettle were in a dresser. Check in was awkward, we arrive at 2.40 and as we expected waited for a room by getting a drink in the bar but paid, ready for the room to be allocated at three. At five past three I was told the room wasn’t ready and I had to check in, I explained we’d already checked in and suddenly the room was available. There was a catch which we found out the next afternoon, rooms are not made up unless you request it…..we were not told this on check in but there is a small notice on the front desk which we saw this morning on check out. The upgrade fee was refunded. Breakfast was excellent, Rebekah is cheerful and hard working. I’m attaching photos of worn furniture and carpet in the premier room and stained carpet in the corridor outside our room. We cannot think we would ever stay in such a shabby hotel again, it’s a shame as it could be wonderful. Although there is a sign asking guests to wear masks in public areas this was never requested.

Seems a common theme here to what I experienced. Room cancelled due to a technical issue over card pre payment not happening (despite messaging hotel to flag issue & solve), room cancelled then ‘you’re welcome to rebook, the room price has doubled though & we won’t budge from that’. If you really want to stay here suggest you pre pay at time of booking.

When I booked this hotel a few weeks before staying I ended up paying £291 for 2 nights. To my amazement this did not include breakfast. The hotel boast being 5 stars and when you enter the lobby you can be impressed , however from there it really goes down hill. The carpets are disgusting, the rooms are very jaded , the furniture is old and looks delapidated . The pillows are terrible just foam. The floor tiles in bathroom are cracked . When I checked out they did the usual thing of asking have you enjoyed your stay but no acknowledgment when I said no. Staff and service poor .what really rubbed salt into the wound one of our party left it until the day before to look and got the room for £130 including breakfast and car park. Be warned

Complete indifference from the young man at reception upon arrival. Breakfast room staff left a lot to be desired. The man responsible for our room on the second floor and numerous others was really hardworking and helpful. Corridor carpet had some absolutely disgusting stains - I shudder to think what they were. Room furnishings have seen better days. The bed was comfortable.

4 star. Er, um I think maybe it had been in the 1970s however the intervening period has been unkind. No air con no mini bar limited cleaning ability of staff. I have added a selection of photos. Maybe it’s a look that they are going for and I missed it
