Detailed Reviews
We went for a Sunday roast after taking our dog on a fantastic walk around Wotton under Edge. The roasts were excellent, chicken and beef were tender, good selection of vegetables and very generous portion.....plus a large gravy boat on request! Food was served fresh and relatively quickly given the number of customers on the day. Good selection of beers and wine....meals were very reasonably priced and I feel excellent value for money. Service was good and staff were polite and welcoming. Hotel is dog friendly which is a bonus! Overall a very nice Sunday lunch and would highly recommend

We booked a night, and I mean rare nights away. Thinking of convenience we chose to have the two courses at the restaurant on arrival and include breakfast. Even a few days after booking we decided to upgrade to a four poster room. When we arrived, even though we had paid for a two course evening meal there was no booking for a table for us. Thankfully they had a table. When we came for dinner we were shown a menu and was happily choosing when we were told it was a different menu as a we had the two courses. It was a lot more limited with fewer choices. Made the best of it. Breakfast was the same, a menu in the room showing eggs royale etc only to be face with a full English or omelette. Nothing wrong with the quality but choice is limited. At breakfast I must admit the customer service from Cameron at front of house is a-lot to be desired. However I appreciate it’s the first weekend back after being opened. In check out I said the room we upgraded to (four poster £135) the shower didn’t drain and almost flooded the bathroom “oh yes room 7 we’ve had trouble with the drainage in that one” So they knew this when we paid for the upgrade? All in all, nice town, food is good but limited on pre order and customer service and facilities could be addressed.

Stayed one night here while walking the Cotswold Way. Although a little quirky we found it one of the best accommodations on our 10 night trek. The rooms were absolutely fine, clean and comfortable and the whole operation seemed to run very well, especially considering that the whole restaurant front of house and bar seemed to be being run by three very hard working and polite teenagers, who were doing an excellent job.
Despite the restaurant being busy, dinner was served very quickly and although it was pub-style food it was perfectly acceptable quality for the price.
Would recommend.

I have been coming to this hotel for over 4 years. There have been problems in the past, however as it’s the only hotel in the village I have overlooked these. However the hotel in now run by different people and the problems are too big to ignore. A cooked breakfast used to be included in the cost of the room, however now it’s a continental breakfast and you have to add £7 per person per night it you wish to swap to a cooked breakfast. Which to be honest is not the most appetising around. Since I have been visiting the hotel there have been signs apologising for building work, they could have knocked down and rebuilt the hotel by now. My biggest concern is that I went out for the day on Saturday and came back to find a do not disturb sign on my door and the door unlocked, when I entered the room it hadn’t been cleaned. I complained to the manager who said he would look into it. I was concerned as my belongings had been left in an unlocked room. The manager was nowhere to be seen when I checked out and have still not had a response from him.

Response from David Harrison, General Manager at The Swan Hotel
Responded 23 Mar 2022
Dear Elizabeth130, Thank you for taking the time to write us a review. With regards to your first comment, we cannot find any record of you staying with us ‘for over 4 years’ - you have stayed with us twice; once in November 2019 (where you were refunded £60 for a complaint on one evening) and again in March 2022 (which this review is about). The hotel is not run by different people, the owners/directors are still David and Deborah; both of whom are very much involved with the day to day running of the business alongside their team. To clarify, full cooked breakfasts stopped being included within the room price as standard as of 2020 and we decided to do this to avoid putting our room prices up (which is why our prices haven’t increased since 2019). As for your complaints regarding the quality of our breakfasts, we’re saddened by your dissatisfaction and wish you would have bought it to our attention on either morning so we could have had the opportunity to rectify any problems. We do have ongoing building, maintenance, and renovation work throughout the hotel, (which is part of the nature of running a 17th century building) and we feel it necessary to keep our guests informed, hence the signs around the place; although we’re pleased this didn’t affect you directly as our hard-working maintenance team took last weekend off. Moving on to your ‘biggest concern’ regarding your room, we have investigated fully with all team members on shift at the weekend. One of the managers attempted to contact our head housekeeper throughout the afternoon after you’d raised the issue with him. We’re sorry you didn’t get an instant response. Our head housekeeper has since informed us that she was supervising two of her other housekeepers that day and when going towards your room at around 12-12:30pm, they noticed that you had put the do not disturb sign on your door and, as such, they did not touch the door to your room. This means that, when you left, you must not have locked the room properly (or locked it and then accidentally unlocked it before removing the key) and also left the sign on the door with the wrong side facing forwards. Our head housekeeper has also said that she waited until 2pm to try to service your room but, as the do not disturb sign was still on the door, she was unable to do so. We thought you’d appreciate our other manager servicing your room when you went out for the evening and leaving you with a complimentary bottle of Sauvignon Blanc and luxury chocolates as a goodwill gesture - we notice that you neglected to mention this in your review or thank this same manager who served you breakfast and checked you out on the Sunday morning where you had further opportunity to let us know about your dissatisfaction before rushing off home to leave a negative and in our opinion unfair review. Additionally, we notice that you also neglected to mention that you received a free upgrade to an executive room when you initially complained about the bed being too soft in the room that you had originally chosen when booking through our website. On a closing note, we’re disappointed that you won’t be staying with us again and can only hope you have a better experience next time you’re in the area staying at a neighbouring hotel and leave them a more positive review. Yours sincerely The Team at The Swan Hotel

Stayed here this weekend and we loved the room, the hotel itself was lovely. Really well equipped and comfortable.
Being just out of lockdown it was a little nerve wracking going to a hotel but they had lots of provisions in place to keep everyone safe.
There are lots of steps up to the rooms so if you have mobility issues, make sure you ask when booking.
The only problem we encountered was the thinness of the walls, being able to hear the neighbouring guests TV until 1am and then the staff moving around downstairs at 7 meant I struggled a bit with sleep.
Overall it was a lovely place though.

We booked this hotel as we were visiting my grandsons and their families who live in nearby Yate . We originally had booked room 12 but for some reason were put in room 1. On Saturday we had booked a table for 4 adults and 3 children and were given a table in the main bar area. It was quite busy with people coming in and out and a group of girl hockey players in dirty and sweaty . The food was good and served in good time and we had to pre order week before as there were so many of us. The only problem we found was parking and the WiFi was intermittent and lights in the bar area kept flickering during the two days we stayed there . Our room was above the main bar area so we heard a lot of noise from the bar area . Our bedroom was ok but we found that the shower did not drain very quick and when we first went into the room the drain smelt. The staff worked very hard all the time we were there and were very accommodating.

Sunday lunch for 2 children / 4 Adults .... took 20 mins for drinks to arrive and 30 mins for food to arrive. The restaurant had a table of two and a table of four in also eating and empty tables.
On the plus side , food and plates were piping hot and plenty of veg ( cauliflower cheese extra cost )

The room had a very strong smeel of fabreeze type air freshner and whilst appeared clean the bathroom smelt like an animal had perished in the walls. There were also blue bottles flying around which further supports this, as the hotel was fully booked we didn't push a complaint to try and change rooms and it was managed by simply keep the door to the bathroom shut.
However, despite keeping the room in good condition with no rubbish, mud or anything else left anywhere and the beds being almost as they were (just left unmade from sleeping) the hotel has decided to charge us for THEIR issues with smell and fabricted extra cleaning requirements and inability to use the room tied to this!
Do not trust this hotel, complete scammers. Ruined a good stay.

Response from David Harrison, Owner at The Swan Hotel
Responded 19 Jul 2023
Don’t trust awful guests! I have tried to get this review removed due to the nature of how these guests left the room in its was not a pleasant site to see, and then have the cheek to say it was our fault. At no time in their stay did they even mentioned any of the above ONLY after their stay because we charged them to clean up their discussing mess, after we had emailed them AND sent photos of how they have left the room. So, my response is this, Don’t Urinate on the beds, bathroom was in such a discussing state my wife decided to clean it as it was unacceptable to let the housekeeping team to clean, and then take everything possible from the room that is to use at the premises NOT to take every tolerises, toilet rolls and every hot drink, sugar, tea etc. We had to fumigate the room because it stank of URINE, all the sheets, covers had to be binned, and the room was closed for 2 days before we could use the room again In all the time I have been in the industry 40 years, I have never experienced this type of miss use of a hotel room before.

We had a very warm welcome on arrival. Our room was spacious & airy and the bed extremely comfortable, which we needed after our days walk. The Swan Hotel is a genuinely dog friendly hotel, a huge thank you from Bella. We ate in the hotel also, food was lovely, the steak pie and cottage pie were wonderful, great service throughout. Breakfast again, well organised had everything you wanted, I really liked the idea of having a "lite" breakfast in the price of the room. This consisted of porridge, toast, yoghurt, orange juice, pastries etc....so plenty to be honest, however, you could purchase other options for a more fuller breakfast if you felt you needed it. The customer service received throughout our stay was excellent, always ensuring we had what we needed. We would highly recommend staying at the Swan Hotel, we hope to be back in September.

Customer service needs looking at here. We were told on arrival we could not check in until 3pm even though our room was ready as we put our drinks on our room thanks to a helpful other member of staff. The room was lovely and clean, but breakfast was a huge disappointment. We were greeted by a monologue of words from a member of staff who did the exact same robotic speech with no care or attention, no good morning and no how did you sleep. I could not hear properly nor understand what he said. Rubbish stewed filter coffee and fake croissants too and the cooked breakfast was extra!!

Response from Kristine Ozolina, General Manager at The Swan Hotel
Responded 28 Jul 2023
Thank you for your feedback and we are glad that you enjoyed your room. As discussed via our email responding to your direct review submitted via our booking system, being allowed to charge your drinks to your room does not indicate that the room is ready. As we knew which room you were going to be in, we were happy to let you put the drinks on the room prior to check-in (you did then respond and elaborate that, even taking this fact into account, you were still more unhappy with the conduct of the person who initially greeted you, for which we are sorry and we will talk to them about this). We are also sorry that you were unhappy with your breakfast experience and will speak to the member of staff who worked that day. We are sorry that that the filter coffee was not to your taste, though we will say that it is made using the same coffee grounds that we use for all of our coffees and, based on the time that you came down for breakfast, was still fresh. We initially opted to use individually wrapped croissants/pain au chocolat for the purposes of hygiene and avoidance of wastage, the former being especially necessary during the pandemic, and they went down so well that we decided to continue using them. We hope that you choose to stay with us again if you revisit Wotton-under-Edge.

Hi Alan,
We are a pet friendly hotel. With meals, we allow dogs in the bar and snug areas. With accommodation, there is an extra charge of £10 per pet per night.
Many thanks,
