Situated in the heart of the Dedham Vale AONB, the hotel has 15 en-suite bedrooms combined with a buzzing bar/brasserie which is the heartbeat of the property. Open all day for breakfast, lunch and dinner with a no booking policy allowing you to turn up when you are ready. With its close proximity to the A12 and equidistant from Colchester and Ipswich the hotel is also good for the business traveller. As already mentioned, the hotel is in the Dedham Vale and right on the Essex Way so perfect for leisure and walking holidays and exploring this delightful part of East Anglia.

I’ve reviewed the restaurant separately and so this review is solely based on the hotel experience. The hotel staff are dog friendly, but the venue isn’t. There are no bins in the grounds and guests with dogs, deposit their poo bags in the flower bed, to the right of the main entrance. Get a dog bin and put it somewhere discreet in the car park. Decent owners won’t mind walking 100 feet to a proper bin. The bedroom was comfortable with a decent shower. It was however very much on the small side, and it was too warm. It does have air conditioning, but we were there at the very end of October - so who would expect to need aircon! It can only be down to the rest of the hotel being overly heated, making the room too warm. At breakfast (as we had a dog) we had to eat in the lounge. The lounge is geared up for drinks - not dining, with low tables and chairs or high tables with low chairs. In reality - dog friendly at Milsoms means - dogs welcome, and not “we’ve made an effort”.

Disappointing …..I booked this as a 50th birthday evening ..hotel stay and dinner …as it was advertised as dog friendly …I think dog friendly is misleading ..they certainly like dogs ..BUT …it all feels a second rate experience if you do go with a dog and it is a considered cost in these times……..Dinner was in the outside area ..covered with a tarpaulin ..it lacked any sort of ambience .patio heaters made it warm but it felt bleak ..garden style tables , no music ..and unfortunately big table of people who dominated the bleakness ..felt like no real effort has gone into this area ..an after thought .. it certainly did not feel a area that a special meal could be enjoyed .. so if dog friendly is ………sit in an area that will do or in a bar lounge that has low chairs for high table then it is not a place I would return to .That is a real shame as the food in the evening was very good and so was the breakfast .. so please Milsoms I have eaten there without my dog in the main restaurant and it is a totally different experience ..do not make guests feel second class ..it may not be intentional but think about that outside space and just make it a pleasant area to spend time in and not so bleak ……leave with you ….oh and the standard room I had was very small and extremely hot .. so dog owners a bigger room needed if you go there so not the best nights sleep ..again a shame ….

We booked there one night stay with room, champagne, dinner and breakfast package. We enjoyed our stay but there was many issues that I would not have expected to experience in such a highly rated and well known hotel. Reception- Arrived all excited and but no one was at reception even rang bell a few time till we had to flag down a member of bar staff to get someone to them be told the staff member was on the phone and she be another 5 minutes…. Not great customer service. The room - was lovely and not issue at all with the room and our champagne was ready and waiting for us! Perfect. Dinner- arrived in dining room and were seated to see a note pad and pencil on our table to be told by the waitress standing next to our table that we have to write down what we want and take it to the bar! That not the service we expected to get from here. what I found was odd was that the staff would take the odd drink order from us so why could they not take our food order??. There was no sense to this system as it can’t be covid related if the staff still took the odd drink order from our table and they are not wearing masks so this weird note pad service can’t be a covid safety feature for there stuff. We just did not understand. Food was great! We did have a issue that my husband was just finishing his starter and our mains were delivered to our table again that not the service I would expect from anywhere. Breakfast- the best breakfast we have ever had! It a pre order the night before and the choice was amazing and we order far to much!!! But it was AMAZING! The service in the morning from staff was great! They were much more organised that the evening staff I have to say sadly 😞 Check out- much smoother service then check in. Would I stay again ?? Honestly I don’t know.

We recently stayed at Milsoms - our first trip out really since lockdown so we were a little nervous. We booked their Romantic getaway and had the most beautiful room with a lovely chilled bottle of Moet waiting for us. We took the Moet out onto the terrace and sat in the sunshine and drank the lot! We then decided to stay outside for dinner as they had great patio heaters. Food and service was excellent and the very nice bottle of red went down a treat! In the morning the breakfast was also excellent and it was great to see all the ' COVID safety features' in place. We loved it so much I have now booked a similar night at their other hotel Le Maison Talbooth. Highly recommended.

We stopped here to eat on our way to Suffolk and glad we did. We found it by chance and luckily they had a table free. Service was a little slow but this didn’t stop us enjoying the wonderful food. I had the goats cheese and beetroot burger is amazing as is the homemade shepherds pie my husband chose. Would love to visit again and maybe stay
