Beautiful old building is now another run down seafront hotel. Carpet in lobby held down with gaffer tape. I was struggling with my case due to having a broken toe but nobody offered to help, despite a man walking right past me who looked like a bell boy. At £200 a night for a Sunday and Monday night I expected more. Room furniture was shabby, bed spongy and pillows awful. The 1920 lift is charming until the doors open and you find it’s carpeted up the walls and in desperate need of a clean. A beautiful window with a stained glass feature next to the lift is filthy, could be a real feature if someone bothered to clean it. Staff were pleasant but uninterested. As I checked out nobody asked me if I had enjoyed my stay, if they had I would have told them about all the above. They do provide earplugs but even with them you can still hear the singers outside on the terrace (directly below). Finally, was afraid to use the fan as it looked like it was going to come away from the ceiling it was wobbling so badly. Avoid Room 221.

Stayed at this hotel for several times over the years, always chose this as it’s near the lanes on the beachfront and proximity to the pier. Was rather disappointed to find no more room service. We use to always order room service and have our breakfast in the room. The information booklet that’s in the room still states that they do room service. We was in executive seaview double which is a lovely size unfortunately the hotel seems to have gone downhill as this room looks like the team from 60 minute makeover have decorated it. Stains on the carpet, nothing matches. Still the same curtains etc from when I first started coming here in 1997. All the curtains look faded. Mattress was quite comfortable but my god the pillows were horrendous. Both myself and husband had bad necks the next morning. Top shelf in wardrobe is very dusty. The room needs a total renovation with new carpet, curtains. Bathroom is looking dated. Please bring back room service. On the plus side the addition of the pod coffee machine was a pleasant surprise. On the whole the room was quite clean and receptionists and restaurant staff are fantastic

After reading the reviews I was a bit nervous but I’m so glad I ignored them! We stayed just one night and it was wonderful in every way! Very helpful and friendly staff - the guy running the carpark was super-nice! Excellent room with sea view, superb dinner and wonderful breakfast. The terrace on the front, facing the sea is just awesome - and the wonderful live singer just made it so special - to sit having a cocktail with the singer belting out magical songs was just gorgeous. Yes the lift is slow but who cares! It’s old! I will definitely be back every time I come to Brighton!

Dear Lynn Thank you for your review of our hotel. It is such a pleasure to receive this kind of positive feedback and I will be happily sharing your review with the whole team, whom I am sure will be as happy to hear it as I was. We live in every changing times so to find that good traditional hospitality is still appreciated and welcomed in a modern world is an absolute joy to learn. Kind Regards Jason Bramwell General Manager

We didn't stay here but we love having a snack/drink out the front. It has a lovely relaxed atmosphere and in the evenings music/singers. Great for people watching . Lovely, friendly bar staff. Close to main hub of town and across the street from main beach.

Thank you also for your lovely comments about Petre. I am very proud of the whole team here and when a guest takes the time to particularly mention how a team member has looked after them, I know my pride is well justified. I will make sure that Petre is given a special mention in our internal news and included in the nominations for Team Member of the Month. Kind Regards Jason Bramwell General Manager

After reading so many good reviews, we were really looking forward to staying at The Old Ship on a recent visit to Brighton. Our holiday got off to a bad start when the hotel managed to “lose” our suitcases, not only containing our clothes and toiletries, but very vital medication! After a day’s travelling, it would’ve been nice to have a shower and change for dinner. It was not until late evening that the cases appeared in our room - they had obviously been left in the wrong room. No-one apologised nor offered us a bottle of wine as recompense for the inconvenience and upset caused. Our room was very basic and the window was so difficult to open. Considering it is supposed to be four star, it lacked the little touches such as plenty of toiletries, tissues, biscuits on the tea tray, etc etc. It is no good using the excuse that the hotel is “very old” - it is just poorly managed. The worst thing were the trays of food left festering outside Room 417. Evidently the person inside had Covid and had to have room service! The trays of food plus bags of goodness knows what, sat outside the room for at least three days, we had to walk past every time we left our room. It was not until my SECOND complaint to Reception that the rubbish was cleared away. It may have had something to do with the photograph I showed the girl on Reception! She probably thought I would be putting it on Facebook! On a positive note - all of the staff were friendly and polite, good breakfasts and most of the evening meals were good. The wines we tried seemed poor but pretty expensive! I would not stay there again, nor would I recommend this hotel, despite it’s great location.

I am sorry to hear that your hotel was not the standard you expected. As you will have seen, The Old Ship is a traditional hotel with parts that herald back hundreds of years. As much as we try to stay ahead of any issues, inevitably we are caught out occasionally. Please be assured that I have noted your comments and will be ensuring they are addressed by the Reception Manager as quickly as possible. All I hope is that this will not deter you from visiting us again. Kind Regards Jason Bramwell General Manager

I’ll be honest after reading some of the reviews (after we had booked) we were not sure what to expect about noise and condition of hotel. We need not have worried, ear plugs were supplied but not needed. It was a Sunday night at height of season and we had a sea view room but no issues sleeping. Room a bit tired but good size, comfy bed and plenty of hot water etc. best thing though were friendly efficient staff. I’d like to mention Steve in particular who is in the Garage and a credit to the hotel. Very helpful. Also impressed that they pressure wash the seating area at the front the hotel daily. The man doing this (not his usual job) also went out of his way to be friendly. We would definitely stay again.

Stayed at the Hotel on a 3 nigt Brighton Rocks deal which was great value. I travel quite a lot but the girl on reception Delia was the most efficient and likeable person I have ever dealt with, but I must say all the staff in all areas bar dining and cleaning were all a credit to the Hotel. Had a room on 5th floor that overlooked the Jurys Hotel but also had a slight sea and pier view. Good size clean room and bathroom. Breakfast and the one dinner we had at the hotel were all very acceptable without being outstanding. Part of the deal was an afternoon tea which was first class. So all in all a very good stay which I would definitetly do again if on offer.

It lifts the whole team when one of our guests takes the time to make a special mention of them and, as their General Manager, I know the pride I feel is well justified. We do have some characters here and I know it is all part of what makes us unique. I will make sure that Delia is aware of your comments and make sure they are considered for the next team member of the month. Kind Regards Jason Bramwell General Manager

This is an old and weary hotel with creaking floors and dirty walls. The carpet, which covers all the hotel floor looks dirty and dusty (it might be clean, but it is just so old looking). All hotel passages create some kind of a maze, and as we were given two rooms at opposite sides of the hotel, we needed to find our way through. Lift is old, but it functions. The room smells of fungus, though the bathroom was clean. The hotel location is good and there is a paid valet parking.

I know this this is an old historical hotel, but it is in dire need of repair. In places we found it was rotting and filhy. Our bathroom was full of mold and was falling apart. Given the high price we expected more, and basic cleaning and maintenance would be a start. Also if you want a good night's sleep don't come here. It is a noisy area of Brighton and the hotel's response to this is to give you earplugs.
