Really lovely little place. The main building has a lot of character and is 17th century with wooden beams. We stayed in a small lodge outside of the main building for a wedding and it was immaculately clean, with wonderful views and had everything we needed, including hairdryer, DVDs, books, tea, coffee and biscuits. We would actually go back for a few days rather than just one night in future as it was such good value for money. The owners were very helpful and friendly. The breakfast was enormous and nothing was too much to ask. Overall a gem of a place and would definitely recommend!
In 2017 the pub closed down and carried on as accomodation with the current owners taking over late 2020. We stayed in Beacon View which is a ground floor apartment style accommodation set in what used to be a car port/garage bar. The accommodation Beacon View comprises Double Bedroom with an en suite fully tiled spacious bathroom with bath and shower overhead. There is a wardrobe and doors opening onto the deck. The main area has a kitchen with hob, oven, toaster, kettle, microwave and fridge with ice box and plenty of cooking and dinning supplies. There is a small table with 2 chairs, a sofa and a good out single bed for an extra guest. Again there is double doors onto the deck. The deck has a bistro patio set with four chairs, plenty of space around and views over the fields towards the beacon as the name suggests. Really stunning and peaceful. Alciston is a very small village intersected by several footpaths and has just a single narrow road in and out, can be a squeeze if you encounter a tractor....which we did 😲. Bed was lovely and comfortable, there are a few DVD's (TV has built in player), some games and books. We had a chat with the owners when leaving and they seem really nice. There is also WiFi and we had no problems with any of the facilities, plenty of parking too. We would definitely like to come back again.…
We booked this last minute to visit family. The room was lovely, and bed comfortable. This is a lovely setting in a tranquil village within easy reach of Lewes, Brighton and Eastbourne. Ideal for those who like walking also. The owners were friendly and keen to ensure you were happy. A good hearty breakfast is also available. We will stay here again when the weather improves so we can sit out in the lovely gardens they have. If you want something Tranquil, in rural then I would highly recommend this property.
Recently stayed here for a walking weekend on the South Downs with two friends. We stayed in the loft room above the garage. Lovely views, parking, clean, warm lots of hot water and comfy bed. Even a kitchenette that was fine for cooking, and a TV...what more could you want for a walking or cycling weekend? We had a cooked breakfast one morning in the inn , delicious... sitting at a table next to an open fire, and lovely friendly owners. Will defo go their again. Alfriston is a 5 min drive away to pick up the South Downs way or to eat in the many pubs. You could probably walk?? But it was dark and raining.... so car was the better option.
Date of Stay - 6 July 2019 for two nights. I was due to arrive earlier, however due to traffic and other issues I arrived very late. I called the premises and told the gentleman apologetically I would be late - he joked he'd been waiting in all day for me and would be in bed by the time I arrived - this made me chuckle, he seemed a jovial character as it's the kind of joke I'd crack with someone! Helpfully, he gave me directions to my accommodation for the night and inquired if I wanted breakfast in the morning - which I did not. Upon arrival (circa 22:30 hrs), I parked my car and did as he suggested and safely arrived at the Garden Room without disturbing the owner - I was keen not to disturb him from his rest/sleep although he did say I could if I got lost. The Garden Room is in a sort of annex away from the main cottage. When I arrived the room was unlocked ready for me to use. It's decent room - with a TV, two tables, fridge, hob, sink (complete with Fairy washing up liquid), plus a miniature bathroom consisting of a small sink toilet and shower cubicle - toiletries are provided. The thing that stands out the most is how CLEAN the place is. It's in the country so there is the odd spider hanging around the corners of the ceiling but that doesn't bother me. I'm quite tall so found the bed very low, however it was comfortable and provided me with a decent sleep. The only thing that disturbed me was the clipperty clop of horses and vehicles passing by in the morning. Also I could hear water gushing from next door , I think it may have been a toilet being flushed? The ONLY criticism (more of an observation) was that the plumbing system is not working properly. I found what looks like poo in the toilet - I think it may be some flashback from the other adjoining toilet, it wasn't mine as I didn't poo there! While a bit off-putting I'm a grown lady, so I just flushed it away before I used the loo - not a big issue, but does need to be looked at. I chose not to spend my second night there, but that was because I wanted to hit the road and head home rather than struggle with A23/M23/M25/M40/M42/M6 traffic in the daytime. I stayed on my own, but my room was OK for a single person and just about OK for a couple, but no more than that. The views of the countryside in the car park are lovely and I spent some time just hanging about there. However the Garden Room has zero views, but I wasn't there fore the view outside my window, I was just there for a bed to sleep in! An OK stay. A great location for the Love Supreme Festival I was attending at Glynde Place.…
Great night at this lovely quaint place. Very welcoming hosts and a fantastic hearty breakfast. Lovely clean rooms and a very peaceful night's sleep near the beautiful village of Selmeston. Well worth a visit and highly recommended.
Visited for a place to lay my head for a nearby wedding in Firle. Great choice. Very clean and comfortable room. I will remember this place for the breakfast! Freshly made for when you need it, delicious. Great coffee and lovely relaxed environment to enjoy it in. Cheers Keith. Would fully reccommend!
Comfortable en-suite room, small but detached and very private with own entrance ... excellent ..! Please note that the Pub and Restaurant are now closed, the Rose Cottage Inn now operates as an excellent B & B ...
Booked the Beacon View apartment for a week in May 2019 for my birthday back in July last year. The cottage inside is clean, tidy and warm. I booked this on the basis that we would have a beautiful view of the sussex countryside, this was the case when we turned up, but on the Monday of the holiday we were informed that some building materials would be delivered and placed at the side of the cottage, the next day, which was my birthday, 3 giant bright orange gravel bags turned up and were placed on the patio, totally ruining the view we had from the apartment. When I questioned the owner we were informed that they needed to 'sort out the patio as its an eye sore and its needed to be done for other holiday makers'. WHY NOT DO THIS WHEN THERE IS NO ONE IN THE APARTMENT?? Please do not waste your money on this place, if there is a problem, the owners do not care.…
We had to stop in Newhaven overnight and wanted somewhere special. "Special" turned out to be an understatement. The Rose Cottage Inn is charming old Half timbered ex pub. Our 'room' turn out to be a mini cottage. Equipped with fitted mini kitchen with hob, sink, fridge, microwave etc etc. There is an excellent shower and loo. The atmosphere is war and cozy. Splendid. Our genial hosts provided us with the most amazing 'English' breakfast that I have had in many years. They are both most excellent hosts with lots of helpful advice. The area is excellent for walking and hiking. The little village too is a charm. We will be returning to stay longer and take advabtage of the beautiful surroundings.
