Wingrove House. Originally built as a family home in the mid 19th century, this recently refurbished colonial-style house offers restaurant and rooms within a relaxed and stylish destination in the beautiful and historic village of Alfriston, East Sussex. Run by a small team, offering a personal and friendly service, with airy verandas, candlelit bar and brasserie and pretty rooms, it's a real antidote to the rush and bustle, yet just over an hour from London.

What a special place! It’s a beautiful building, perfectly located. It has a gorgeous garden offering al fresco dining in addition to an elegant dining room. The bedroom was lovely with a stunning bathroom. We were walking the South Downs Way and celebrating a very special occasion. The team went out of their way to make our stay one to remember. The service was warm and attentive. The food is delicious. Can’t recommend highly enough.

Visited the Wingrove for a meal with friends, what a great evening - food was fantastic, staff attentive, overall a really relaxing evening. Would highly recommend Wingrove House, sitting out in the garden on a summers evening with a glass of wine - excellent

Treated my friend to Afternoon Tea, we sat in the beautiful garden, food and service was absolutely excellent, we couldn’t fault it and nothing was too much trouble. It’s a beautiful setting and has a car park at the front which makes it a very accessible place.

Very friendly staff with good service. An excellent breakfast with a wide menu choice. Enjoyed the garden area and a comfortable well appointed lounge with daily newspapers. The superior room was pleasant but the bathroom is really in need of renovation.

This is a 'tucked away' gem that more than holds its own in this small, but well known village. It has old and new features which complement each other rather well and, despite being next to a busy road, it has been well thought out with the recently added rooms. The restaurant, however, is exceptional and a rare treat in this part of Sussex.

Having never been to Alfriston we immediately fell in love with the village. Can't believe we've missed out on visiting here before now. The hotel is as pretty as it looks in the photo's but is also right on the road of the High Street which can cause a noise issue when you are roadside and need to open windows because of the heat. The heat in this hotel on a warm summer's day was, for us, the main negative. We were there on an average summer's day and I do not think the outside temperature was much more than 23 degrees, but wow the rooms we were given were like ovens. Fans are supplied but in some rooms they simply aren't enough. The duvets are almost winter thick and need to be far thinner if you want to sleep under a cover in the summer months in those rooms. I think the hotel would be wise on sunny days to close curtains and blinds in their rooms and open windows to get through air flowing. We were unable to cool two of the rooms very much at all by the time we returned from dinner. The dining/restaurant staff are friendly, helpful and efficient, and we enjoyed some excellent food there. The decor is very nice, bright and welcoming (although I'm not a fan of the "legs" on the reception walls!). The hotel is very clean. Whilst the heat was the main negative to consider I was rather disappointed that the allocation of several rooms I booked seemed to go all wrong, despite discussion at Reception beforehand, with every single one of us getting the wrong room. In the end we sorted it amongst ourselves but much climbing of stairs was involved to do so. As there is no lift and one of my group was 85 years old I do think some help with luggage wouldn't go amiss at this hotel. Having said all this I would definitely stay there again, for the great location, food and staff. But my tips would be, air you room on arrival if you come in the summer and close your blinds, make sure you have a fan and ask for a summer duvet. Don't miss out on dining here though. We will return in slightly cooler weather next time and I am sure have another enjoyable visit.

A pleasant and comfortable overnight stay, in a historic former colonial style house, within a beautiful setting. My compliment to the chef for the perfect poached egg at breakfast. My only regret was that I arrived late and had to leave early morning.

Had a really lovely one night stay here yesterday. Staff exceptional, room and dinner was fabulous. Everywhere was spotlessly clean and Donna was so helpful for the whole of our stay. I have now booked again for my mums birthday in August. Thank you!

We really enjoyed our night at this lovely hotel and definitely intend to return. The staff were, without exception, outstanding - made us feel very welcome and well cared for. The room was lovely - spacious, lovely view towards the church, very quiet, huge bed, very comfortable. Excellent bathroom too. Breakfast also good.
