The Grand Hotel, Swanage is a classic Victorian seaside hotel that nestles in the heart of the beautiful Isle of Purbeck and dates back to 1898. It commands spectacular views across Swanage Bay and Peveril Point and many of the bedrooms and public areas take advantage of these delightful views. On summer days the garden is the perfect place to soak up the sun, whilst enjoying a refreshing glass of wine or dining Al Fresco. Stroll along our private sandy beach, which can be accessed directly from the garden.

The Grand Hotel Swanage is often celebrated for its prime location with magnificent views of Swanage Bay, which guests love for both the scenery and the convenience it offers for local exploration. While the value is seen as a balance of high-priced options and more reasonable deals, some visitors find meals and drinks to be costly. The vibrant atmosphere, particularly during festive events, and the inviting ambiance are standout features.
Rooms are recognized for their cleanliness and comfort, boasting modern amenities and sea views, though there are occasional reports of noise and discrepancies with online descriptions. The hotel's service garners positive comments for its friendliness and professionalism, and while the cleanliness is generally applauded, some guests have noted sporadic issues with daily housekeeping. Amenities such as the delicious breakfast and recent upgrades are also well-received.

Detailed Reviews
We are here at the moment, and are all having a brilliant time, from age 75 down to 8. The hotel is scrupulously clean, with anti bac gel dispensers everywhere, temperatures taken on arrival and restaurant and bar tables spread far apart with staff in masks. Comfortable beds, incredible location with gorgeous views of the bay and access down to a beautiful beach, beautiful views from the light and airy conservatory where we ate dinner and played cards (particularly recommend the sticky toffee pudding!). To top it all the staff were excellent - friendly, efficient and attentive.

We stayed for 2 nights on 26,27th February using a travelzoo voucher. We had an inland room on the top floor with views of the purbeck hills. The room was spacious, providing all the necessary things, tea tray with biscuits, iron and board, toiletries and an extra heater as the room did get chilly. The bathroom was modern with lots of hot water. The bed was comfy, but mind your head! If you did not want your room serviced a £5 voucher was issued to use in the bar or restaurant. We ate in the lovely conservatory overlooking the sea. The food offered was a good choice, lovely and hot, the staff were attentive and friendly especially the 2 young men. Breakfast was equally as good with good choice. The views from the hotel are stunning, with private steps to the beach, walking distance to the town and coastal paths. There was a brilliant gym, pool, jacuzzi and sauna in the basement. I would thoroughly recommend a stay here ,very relaxing and calm, we will be back.

We had a very short stay here, just one night. The hotel was lovely. The greeting on arrival was warm and friendly. Our room on the top floor was bright, and spacious. Both the room and the bathroom appeared to have been fairly recently decorated, it was all very clean and there was no sign of it being 'tired'. Lovely white fluffy towels were provided for the bathroom, which had a lovely shower with a large fixed rainfall type shower head, and a conventional handheld option. We did not pay extra for a sea view, but enjoyed a lovely view over to Ballard and Nine Barrow Downs instead. Complementary tea, coffee, and chocolate drink were provided in the room, with 1 pack of 2 shortbread biscuits. 2 packs would be nice, that coming from someone who likes a biscuit or two with my tea. Reception were happy to give us extra milk when we asked for it.
Our stay was on a room only basis so did not include their 'award winning' breakfast, and we decided as we are not big breakfast eaters the £9.95 pp supplement for breakfast was not for us. I am more of a coffee and croissant person, so we headed into town for breakfast after checking out.
As we were only there one night, on a short walking break, we did not use the hotel leisure facilities, but we would if we stayed longer. We enjoyed an evening drink in the comfortable spacious bar, the staff here like all our other encounters with staff, were friendly and efficient, and the bar prices were reasonable.
Parking is very limited - it is much easier to drop your things off at the hotel then head 1 min drive (3 or 4 min walk) to the North Beach car park, where there is plenty of space and only costs £6 for 24 hrs.
The hotel is a beautiful old building, with a lovely garden, a great conservatory area with wonderful sea views, and there is direct access to the beach via some steep steps down through the garden.
We would definitely stay there again.
Photos are of our room, the view from our room, early morning view from the conservatory, and Swanage beach below the hotel.

The hotel is in a wonderful position with fabulous views. However, we paid for a deluxe room but it was far from it! The furniture is quite dated, the room quite small, and the TV well what can I say it must be the smallest they could find! Watching Wimbledon I couldn't see the score or ball unless on top of it! The mirror was hanging off the hinge on the dressing table. There was a portable heater which was needed one night but when moved thick dust underneath it despite the room supposedly having been deep cleaned! The bathroom was ok apart from the shower which you couldn't swing a cat in! No cleaning room service if you need anything you do it yourself and put outside the room. This is a poor excuse for covid as for hygiene purposes the bathroom and toilet should be cleaned daily. Most people are out during the day so there is no excuse especially when they are all milling around together in the dining room etc. The service was so slow one morning we waited 45 mins for breakfast to be served! The evening menu pretty boring unless you like fish and again service quite poor. All in all very disappointing for a hotel which is charging 4 star prices!

Booked a 2 night weekend stay in early December to surprise gf and propose!
The staff were fantastic - they are very friendly and helpful. They put on a special table to celebrate our engagement on the second night and adapted brilliantly to a local power cut by still providing most of the menu and a candlelit dinner. The hotel is lovely, very traditional. It is COVID secure and takes it seriously.
If you love walking or hiking, the hotel is in a great location. We walked the coastal path to Old Harry Rocks from the hotel and the views are magnificent. Also, Durlston Country park and the lighthouse are a short walk away. Be careful if it's a windy day! Corfe Castle is a short bus ride or taxi ride away and definitely worth a look.
I booked a room with an inland view and bathtub (much needed after all the walking!) but you can still make the most of the views from the breakfast and dining rooms. The lift makes a bit of noise, so you may want to avoid a room next to the lift. Otherwise, the room had all the essentials. Warm room, comfortable bed.
No complaints really - excellent hotel and staff. We'll be back!

We booked a week in The Grand Hotel when we realised we weren't going to be able to go abroad for a holiday this year. We were looking for somewhere traditional and quiet in a great location. We weren't disappointed and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Parking was somewhat restricted but we were able to get a space on arrival and didn't use the car for the week rather than lose it although this had been the plan anyway. The location was great with easy access to the beach, the town, the coastal path, Purbeck Breezer bus route etc. The food was very good and the staff all extremely pleasant and accommodating which meant we were happy to dine in every night even if the evening menu may have seemed a little limited to some. The view over the bay during dinner was wonderful and we had a pleasant sea view from our room with the sound of the waves sending us to sleep each night. Although lingering Covid restrictions meant our room wasn't serviced every day, this suited us and we knew fresh towels and supplies were available if required. It was almost a home from home, exactly what we wanted after the last eighteen months of uncertainty and lockdowns.

We stayed overnight over the weekend. Our room was lovely, and the food (both the evening meal and the breakfast) was really nice - obviously we had a different experience from the previous reviewer. But we have had rather old fashioned rooms in the past although the view has always made up for it.
We hadn't been worried about staying at the hotel (from a Covid point of view) as we knew it was spacious and airy. The bar staff wore masks, the seats and tables were cleaned after someone had been sitting there, there were perspex screens at the bar and reception, and there were hand sanitizers everywhere. Our temperature was checked when we arrived.

The Grand Hotel is a short walk from the centre of Swanage and is located in a beautiful position. The sea view rooms take full advantage of this and are really worth paying the extra charge. The interior of the hotel is pleasant and the restaurant offers a comprehensive menu . The quality and presentation of the food is excellent. On site parking is limited but there is plenty of unrestricted street parking available nearby. I would definitely recommend this hotel if staying in the area.

So pleased we decided to return to this lovely Hotel.
The Service was very good and friendly. The professional way all the staff worked within the confines of COVID 19 and the issues it brings was amazing.
There was no daily room cleaning due to the distancing, but you only Had to leave a towel or sheet Outside your room in the laundry bag provided, and you were given clean laundry. If you can’t be bothered to make your own bed you must be lazy!
The views are amazing, we enjoyed all our meals.
Thank you for a lovely break.

My wife and I stayed for 5 nights in October. The location of the hotel is stunning with a spectacular view across Swanage bay. We did our research on-line and selected a "Luxury" Double on the third floor. The room had obviously been recently refurbished and I would agree that the en suite bathroom had been finished to a high standard but I find it difficult to apply the term "Luxury" to the room itself. It was clean and comfortable but rather cramped. We were prepared to overlook these shortcomings however because of the sea view. At £154.00 per night (inc Breakfast) I was expecting something that perhaps better reflected use of the description "Luxury". Other parts of the hotel including the common areas such as the lounge and reception looked tired and in need of a bit of a facelift. The small lift has certainly seen better days and in fact was out of service for 24 hours at one point during our stay. I am quite prepared to make allowances and I have the greatest sympathy with anybody trying to run a business in the hospitality sector at the moment but I was just left feeling that The Grand's prices do not deliver full value for money. Quite possibly because of Covid-19 the hotel has had to reduce its staff numbers and as a result the staff who were there worked extremely hard. They were all very friendly and polite but on occasions there were some uncomfortably long delays in service in the restaurant. There also seemed to be a marked lack of supervision and I didn't see anybody acting in a management capacity. Having mentioned the restaurant both my wife and I thought the food was OK but not particularly memorable. I notice from other feedback that previous reviews have touched on the inadequate parking facilities and this is definitely and issue. Would we stay there again ? Yes. Would we recommend it to others ? Again yes but with reservations as outlined. Let me conclude with a brief example of why I cannot be totally enthusiastic about the hotel. On the Thursday of our stay I returned at about 1.50pm after a long morning out. I joined my wife who had spent the morning resting and quietly enjoying the view from the conservatory. My wife had already eaten, so at about 1.55pm I asked a staff member if I could order a sandwich only to be told that after checking with the chef the kitchen was now closed ! As a resident spending over £1,000.00 during my 5 night stay I was stunned. Why didn't I complain ? If I could have found somebody from management I would have done !

Hi, as far as I can remember the beach was for anyone to use.
As far as I recall the lift wasn't a. The doors are fire doors and therefore should be pretty soundproof. Why not call the hotel and ask them. They were really helpful.
I wouldn't pay money to stay at the grand Hotel, it wasn't clean and staff not very helpful. Swanage is great for new years eve. Try staying somewhere else.

How far are you from
The centre of swanage?) town
And do all rooms have baths ?
It's about a 15 minute walk to town if you are of average fitness.
You can do if you use the pathway down the hill from the front of the hotel. Directly from the hotel it’s only steep steps. But the path down to the beach on the main road is only a couple of minutes tops
