This excellent hotel on the seafront, or to be precise the East Overcliff offered wonderful service during the Covid problem. We were checked in with a temperature check as well, all markings in the hotel were to allow for 2 metre gaps. There is no servicing in the rooms during your stay to avoid extra chances of contamination. Only in the areas where meals were being consumed did people not wear masks. As for our stay itself the hotel is really lovely and there are more than enough comfortable seating areas both inside and around the pool to allow relaxing without the fear of people being too near. The meals were really good with plenty of choice even a choice of types of coffee for breakfast, flat white, capuccino etc. Cold breakfast was behind a screen and served to you. The hot breakfast also behind a screen and served to you. We could not fault the stay in any way and certainly did not regret going at this particularly difficult time. The car parking is both on site for free but limited and also in the street but paying. Congratulations to the hotel for being so well organised and the staff were especially helpful and efficient.

Overall I was happy with the stay here. Decent facilities at the hotel .eg indoor pool, sauna, squash court and gym via sister hotel next door. Outdoor pool was not in use when I stayed in October. Staff were particularly pleasant and helpful. 20 mins walk into town centre . Nice view of the front, however only some rooms have balconies to enjoy this experience. I only had breakfast one morning which was decent though would suggest booking this before hand at cost of £ 10 P/P rather than when you arrive as they will try and charge you £ 14.95 then. Parking is an issue which was a negative, especially as expected to pay for the privalege at £ 8 per day - not sure this is a good customer experience as parking should be free for patrons and issued via a permit for your stay. Masks to be used at all times whilst walking around communal areas and hand sanitiser was in good supply at reception

I spent two nights at the Cumberland with my two children, 3 and 5 years, during half term. I paid extra for a sea view room which was really worth it, even if the rooms are a little basic. The hotel itself is old-school fancy, very charming, and every single member of staff we had contact with was wonderful and couldn’t have been more friendly or helpful. We had breakfast at the hotel, I had a drink in the cocktail bar and we had dinner both nights at the Overcliff Pub on site, and everything was really lovely and convenient. The girls absolutely loved the pool, which very nice and well maintained (though the ladies changing rooms were totally grim, especially at the end of the day). The only negative point was, on our first morning I got a call from reception saying the room below had complained, asking my children to be quiet. Given that at that time my girls were just laughing about how excited they were to be on holiday I was pretty upset and embarrassed. Seeing as I could hear every bang of a wardrobe, cough, laugh and footstep from the room above us, (and I could easily have complained too if I had been mean enough) I realised that it’s an old hotel with thin floors and the people below us were going to hear every movement we made. I therefore spent the rest of our stay paranoid and hissing at my poor children to tiptoe and not laugh in case we got told off again. It really spoilt our stay and it was very unfair on my children who were so happy to be there. Whilst this wasn’t the a fault of the hotel staff, I really think they should have come to our door to listen themselves to see if my children were making an unreasonable amount of noise, which I’m not convinced they were (this was morning, around 9am.. we were in bed by 830pm both nights) and if it wasn’t unreasonable, then explain to the complainers that the hotel is old with no soundproofing rather than to have immediately taken the other party’s side an make us feel so awful. I really suspect that had it been adult laughing and footsteps no complaint would have been made.. some people just hate child noise!! However, when we left we had lunch in town and two separate elderly couples came to our table to say how beautifully behaved the girls were and how they like to hear children playing nicely so I guess it’s swings and roundabouts..!

Dear Plumstead888, Thank you for taking the time to write us a 4 star review and provide us with your feedback. We take our guests feedback very seriously since many times is with this feedback that we improve our product and services. My sincere apologies that in this occasion you felt like this noise situation spoilt a little bit your stay. We try to be fare in this situations and we totally understand that kids sometimes are happy and excited and for that reason they might be noisy. Which in your case in my opinion is not even noise is just excited happy children. At the same time other guests sometimes are not very understanding of this. I understand you feel like we took their side, but i can guarantee you this was not the case. We always tell guests to keep in mind is children in the room so there's really not much we can do. Having said that we also called you just to try to keep the noise as low as possible but never to stop your kids from being excited and happy. I apologize if it came across that way. I'm happy that overall and apart from that you enjoyed your stay. We hope to welcome you back at The Cumberland. For the best rates and offers please call us direct on 01202290722. Great location especially with a sea facing room on a nice day ~ perfect for waking up too. Public areas are lovely especially if you like the Art Deco feel, with a good lounge and bar area to relax night or day. Staff very pleasant and public areas nervy clean. Breakfast good too although some of the food particularly juices were not of great quality. Room was very disappointing though ~ bed huge and comfortable but room was desperately in need of a refurb and good clean ~ bathroom was extremely dated with the dreaded over bath shower and cheap shower curtain that stuck to you. We were on the first floor directly over the main entertainment room which had music blasting until 1 am and our floor was vibrating ~ the hotel had left a note in our room to tell us it wa noisy and offering free ear plugs ! Perhaps best to tell potential guests before they book ! Also frustrating was when we ordered in the bar the first response was not customer satisfaction related but “how are you paying for that ?”. An irrelevant and ruse question in such an abrupt manner. We were dinner bed and breakfast and whilst having dinner we were given the “Special dinner rate” menu. There was clearly another A La Carte menu that was not shared with us. Again the supplemental items on the standard dinner inclusive menu had a pie and explanation against them so we knew we had to pay for them ~ we didn’t have to be asked “how are you paying for that ?” ~ very rude. When having drinks in the restaurant we were asked to pay there and then every round we had ~ clearly they don’t trust the guests not to run off before they pay the bill. Could be a fabulous hotel but at the moment sadly lacking and not one to return to ; a Premier Inn might have been substantiated better.

Dear chrismadden63, Thank you for taking the time to write to us with feedback regarding your stay. We take our guests feedback very seriously since this is one of the best tools to improve our product and services. I'm glad to hear there were some positives aspects of your stay, as the view, our lounge areas and the very comfortable bed you had in your room. I'm sorry you did not enjoy your room as much as we hoped you would. We constantly update and refresh our rooms so I can guarantee you that I will report your comments regarding the room to our maintenance team so they can organize some refreshment jobs. The party you heard during your stay, was changed venue last minute so the best we could do was leaving letters in the room to warn guests. For that reason we offer earplugs to guest that might need them and lower the volume of the music by 25% at midnight. Regarding your dinner. you were booked as you said on a Dinner, Bed & Breakfast deal so your allocated restaurant is the Mirabelle which is our House restaurant. It's not a "Special Dinner rate" menu its simply two completely distinct restaurants and Menus. The Ventana does have an A la Carte menu which you can upgrade too at £15 per person. We usually while eating in the restaurant we charge it to the table and you can pay at the end of the meal or you can pay per round. Its a matter of preference. I will speak with our bar staff as this should be for our guest to choose what would they prefer. I hope you change your mind and give us a second chance to prove you that we do have the best costumer service in this business and that we can make sure you will have a wonderful stay. For the best prices and offers please contact our Central Reservations team on 01202290722. Kind regards, Leonardo Grosse

We visited mid week, for a couple of nights in July (post lockdown COVID-19).
The booking was originally for June, but due to the pandemic we re booked for July. I was fairly concerned about going to Bournemouth following recent footage regarding social distancing, but on arrival to the hotel they had a good system set up, with good signage and plenty of hand wash stations.
Parking is first come, first served and we luckily managed to find a space in the busy car park (they were allowing parking in their sister hotel next door provided you registered the car there).
We were put into a double balcony room over looking the seafront. The room was large, with a large double bed and a single bed with a narrow balcony and a stunning view.
The large bathroom had a bath and shower.

The room itself was clean with new carpet and tea making equipment (paper cups and no spoons due to hygiene).
There was an adjoining door to the next room which was painted shut. You can hear what goe's on if next door are loud enough....

So why three stars?
The hotel staff were all excellent. Very professional and friendly.
The hotel itself is a large traditional seafront hotel. Overall the decor is good, but its the finer details that let it down. Over painted woodwork, cheap lino in the bathrooms, cheap plastic loo seats and poor sealant around the bath and sinks....why are all large UK hotels like this?
It might seem fussy, but at nearly £300 (including complimentary upgrade) for 2 nights, we kind of expected a higher finish.

We didn't eat in the evening so cant comment.
The breakfast was safe (COVID-19) and the waiting staff were again attentive and professional. Sadly the quality of the food was disappointing. They had been under the lamps too long and the bacon was tough and chewy and the sausages were fairly low quality.
On the second morning I just had toast, eggs and beans which were fine.

The bar.
I tried to get a pint in the evening, but sadly the only beers on tap on offer were Worthingtons or Carling. Everything else was off.
After several months of waiting for a poured pint, Bournemouth left me disappointed.

Location wise, the hotel is great for the beach (its quieter than closer to the pier). Just a 5 minute walk into the center of Bournemouth.

The hotel has a good product that just needs polishing.

Dear JGHants, Thank you for your review. We appreciate all guest feedback as without it we cannot improve our service and facilities. We are sorry that you were disappointed with the room. All our bedrooms are furnished and decorated to a high standard but sometimes it is up to a personal taste. I wish you had mentioned your concerns to our Reception Team, who could have found alternative accommodation for you. Regarding the price, it is high season for Bournemouth at the moment and considering the rate you paid, you have got fairly a good deal as some rates are over £300.00 per night. We do apologise for the issues you experienced at breakfast. Your comments are noted and will be passed to our Head Chef. We always use local produce - we were quite surprised to read your comments about the tough bacon as our breakfast is always busy and the turnover of food is really high. A lot of businesses have re-opened recently, so many alcohol suppliers could not cope with the demand. Unfortunately, not having a variety of beers on draft was out of our control. We do apologise for any inconvenience caused. I can see that some issues you mentioned could have been easily rectified, should you brought them to our attention. We hope that we will have the opportunity to make it up for your experience in the nearest future. Please contact our Reservations Team on 01202 298350 to personalise your stay. Kindest Regards, Helder Pinto

Having contacted the hotel to get a price check from a booking site. They agreed to price match it but all the other promises (displayed on website and in the lobby) were cancelled. Poolside was filled with non-residents on Sunday. The radiator got removed from our room due to a leak and a smelly, damp carpet left. Manager apologetic but leaving us with that carpet was not acceptable. No offer of a discount or complementary drink. If you drink gin expect to pay London prices. I know the lockdown has been hard for the service industry but hard and worn mattresses, no air con and torn chairs on the balcony do not make this a 3/4 star establishment. Covid procedures seem pretty good with temperature checks on arrival. I think this hotel could be so much better if it tried a bit more. Bar staff were friendly enough. To promote the extras you should get when booking directly with them and then to renege on this on arrival and meant they missed out on us using the restaurant for dinner. Reception staff polite and as accommodating as they could be given the circumstances. Maybe it’s too early to start reopening hotels 🤔
View was great if the windows had been cleaner...

Dear 992vanessak, Thank you for taking your time to post a review on your recent stay at the Cumberland. We appreciate all your comments and they will be thoroughly investigated and passed to relevant departments. I am not to sure what promises you are referring to - if these are our 6 reasons to book direct, they all are valid and applicable during your stay such as free parking for direct bookings and 10% discount on the food in our outlets. We do apologise for the maintenance issue in your room - unfortunately, it was an unforeseen issue and thank you very much for your understanding. We do not advertise air conditioning on any of our booking engines, however fans are always available on request. It is a shame that you did not highlight any room problems during your stay, otherwise we could have found alternative, satisfactory accommodation for you. Regarding the Sunday afternoon by the pool - we are a very established business with a lot of regulars that relies on the local trade. The guests by the pool were our loyal customers that visit us throughout the year. We are pleased that nevertheless our staff looked after you well. We do hope for the opportunity to make it up for your experience and welcome you back. To personalise your stay please contact our Reservations Team on 01202 298350. Kindest Regards, Helder Pinto

We stayed at this hotel on a two night package which included breakfast and one dinner. The hotel was quite busy and despite checking in at 3.30 pm there were no parking spaces and the earliest dinner slot was 8.15pm, which meant eating around 9pm. Covid was being taken seriously and we were impressed by the attention to cleaning tables and all staff were masked. Our room was spacious and overlooked the sea and we were pleased with the view, bed size and the bathroom. However the shaving point in the mirror was inaccessible and on one morning only lukewarm water was available. By far the biggest issue though was parking. Although no room at the inn there was parking along the front. Unfortunately the council have stopped paying by credit card and who has £11/day in cash to feed the meter. So although we enjoyed our short break we would probably not use this hotel again because of the parking.

Myself and my husband decided to have a Staycation at the Cumberland Hotel due to the restrictions on travelling abroad because of Covid .On arrival we were met by friendly reception staff who guided us through what we should expect during our stay. To be honest I was slightly apprehensive about going on a staycation due to the current covid-19 situation as I felt that hotels would not be able to manage their guests social distancing. However they coped really well. There were notices displayed in the reception area and a hand sanitising station. However I was slightly concerned about there being no hand sanitiser stations at entry points to the lifts on all floors, taking into consideration that are only for 4 floors within the hotel I would have thought that this would have been easy to set up near all the lifts on all floors so that guests pressing buttons would be able to sanitise coming in and out. The hotel itself is clean warm and friendly, the breakfast was delightful and the staff extremely helpful. I must say however when it came to the accommodation I was disappointed as there were no ironing facilities within the room neither was there any air conditioning or a fan
( I was lucky that I had my travel iron in the boot of my car). Considering that we paid just over £400 for a two nights stay only including breakfast I would have expected this to be a standard requirement for this room. Unfortunately there were stains and an iron burn on the carpet and several hairs on the crisp white sheets. However the seaview partly made up for this. I am not sure if we would book again as I do not think that it was value for money.

Dear junebG3768HX, Thank you for your review. We are grateful for your comments regarding the service you have received from our team and we are glad that overall you enjoyed the experience. We are extremely sorry to read your disappointment regrading your room. We wish you had mentioned your concerns to our Reception Team who would be happy to assist with iron and fan provision as these items are delivered to guest bedrooms on request. Most of the amenities have been removed from rooms as stated in your welcome letter due to current Covid-19 safety measures. We do not advertise air conditioning and it is clearly described on all our booking engines. We do apologise that you have been disappointed with your room and it is a shame that nothing was mentioned on the day as our Duty Management would assist in providing alternative accommodation for you. We had a 1 night stay in room 210 with balcony and sea view. We booked direct through the Hotel which worked well as the price paid seemed competitive and we got free parking and various discounts thrown in. The check-in process was very efficient and Covid guidelines were very much catered for and followed. The public areas are really smart and well looked after and we liked the art deco theme.
Our room was a bit dated but very comfortable and large. Having a sea facing balcony was nice but we didn't have much time to enjoy it.
We chose to eat out for dinner at the Arbor Restaurat that was excellent and only a 5 minute walk away. Breakfast was included in the deal we had and was very nice (full english for us) with plenty of choice. We used the bar at night before the 10pm close, had a few cocktails that were a bit pricey but nice.
All in all we enjoyed our visit but would recommend a bit of TLC for room 210.

We stayed for 5 nights at the Cumberland and it was a pleasant experience. Plus points were the staff, they were very helpful, the fact the hotel tried very hard to keep the place sanitised, there was plenty of hand sanitiser everywhere and of course the outdoor door pool was great as it was a blistering hot week. We tended to split our time between the pool and the beach. The beach just opposite the hotel when you get down there is nice and quiet unlike the one near Bournemouth and Boscombe piers. The water is clear and lovely and to be fair we didn’t see any litter there.
Negatives were that there was no air con but you have to bear in mind, this is an old property so to install air con would probably be a complete refurb exercise when the hotels are all struggling due to being closed so long for lock down.
We booked a family room as we had our 13 year old with us and when we got there we were given adjoining rooms which were perfect as it meant our teenager had his own small room and bathroom.
It looked like our rooms had recently been refurbished so they were clean and tidy.
There was scaffolding outside or window but we don’t spend a lot of time in our room other than sleeping so we didn’t mind that and I think it’s part of ongoing tidying up that they are doing to the place.
There is an Ibiza style disco by the pool at the weekends but the atmosphere was good, we enjoyed it and it wound down before it got late.
We only ate sandwiches at the hotel when we were leaving but they were really good. If you are going to Bournemouth, it pays to book restaurants well in advance.
The hotel is a little dated but it was clean and I felt they were making a big effort, temperature was taken when everyone was checking in.
You have to appreciate, there are a lot of hotels that haven’t even managed to open so I think This place is doing a good job on the whole

Dear Catherine, Thank you for taking your time to review your recent experience at our hotel. We are grateful for your kind comments - we are pleased that our efforts to please all our customers are noticeable and appreciated. These are very challenging times for all of us and we are doing our best to maintain the quality and keep our standards. We are glad that you enjoyed our facilities and liked your room. The weather obviously helped to enhance your experience - we do not get heat waves often in the UK! The building originates from 1930s and is exposed to sea winds at all times, therefore it requires constant maintenance attention, so thank you for your understanding regarding the scaffolding. Some issues have to be rectified despite the busy hotel. Regarding the air conditioning, as commented by you, it is not an easy fix, however we do provide fans in rooms and we are looking to implement some cooling systems some time in the future. We do hope for the opportunity to welcome you back to our hotel soon! To get one of our latest offers please do not hesitate to contact our Reservations Team on 01202 298350. Kindest Regards, Helder Pinto
