Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A great stay away at Merchants Manor, a great hotel nestled just away from the bustle of Falmouth. The team took great care of a solo traveller, in particular Ben & Ellen who were experts in their departments! Rastella restaurant well worth a visit for fine dining from local produce.

Spent a really enjoyable few days at this hotel which is conveniently situated for town and beaches. From arrival the young staff were so very friendly and efficient giving a happy atmosphere throughout. The lady with a connection to Mexico was exceptionally helpful. The accommodation provided was of a high standard and the restaurant food at dinner and breakfast was excellent.

This was my second trip to the hotel for a family occasion and it didn't disappoint. I had a lovely single room with a view of the sea and everything was so clean and comfortable. I made the most of the swimming pool and steam room. It was warm and clean and with the sun shining in I felt I was in a Mediterranean country. The staff as always were friendly and helpful and went out of their way to look after me and my family who were also staying. The only downside was the visit went too quickly. I'm already looking forward to coming back for my next stay. Thanks team !

Sunday stay with friends for a joint birthday. From check in where the staff were polite helpful. No self check in as per previous reviews. Rooms and facilities very good. Lovely personal touch for the birthday girls. The dining experience was fantastic. The good was amazing, but the service was again excellent. Thanks Merchants! We will be back

I booked this hotel directly by phone, booking 2 rooms - one for my husband and me and the other for my brother and his partner, who were visiting from New York. The hotel is nice and the interior decor is attractive. However, there is no proper reception and check-in is on a screen- Premier Inn style- with a girl usually standing by it, and trying to help the guests. I paid a deposit of £50 for our room when booking, and was also charged for £50 for my brother's room. I was asked to pay the balance for our room a few days before our arrival, which I did.I said that my brother would be paying when he arrived. We dropped them off at the hotel and their room was not ready, so they were given the card key for our room, which seems extraordinary, and were charged a £50 deposit for anything we might order. They got their key card and £50 deposit was charged to their credit card, and they paid the fee for their room. I had been told that breakfast was included, and my husband and I had a nice cooked breakfast. When my brother arrived at the restaurant, he was told that only a continental breakfast was included. When we came to leave, we asked about the 2 x £50 that had been charged to my brother's credit card, and his partner's respectively, and were told that the manager would release those as we had not had any extras. The next day, I checked my credit card account and found that £124 had been charged to my account. I phoned the hotel and was told that my brother had not paid for his room. I said that he had, and the individual I spoke to said that he hadn't. He agreed to look into it and 48 hrs after we had left, he emailed to say that the bill had been paid, and he would reimburse me and would remove the 2 x £50 from the other 2 accounts. 5 days later our credit card accounts are now correct. I feel that a good receptionist would have sorted this out before we left. It may be better to book this hotel through one of the booking platforms so that payment is out of the hotel's control.

Stayed for three nights over Christmas and it was totally amazing. We had the best time with the most gorgeous food and happy staff and the accommodation was brilliant. We shall be coming back next year for sure. I must say Christmas lunch was gorgeous and exceeded expectations- wine choice excellent - What more would you need? Stop Moaning and get a travelodge if you don’t want independent, local business that are trying hard to succeed. Full marks to all at MM

We booked a DBB deal, which on paper sounded very good indeed so we were not too sure what to expect… I had read previous reviews about the self check-in not being very reliable but I must say, we had no issue whatsoever. A little more confusing to figure out where the room was but a lovely member of the F&B team offered help and we found ourselves in our cosy, chic and spacious king room in no time. We read the little leaflet in the room and instantly liked what the hotel was trying to do, supporting local businesses and the planet! This ethos was not obvious from the website but we very much appreciated that. We then went to the spa for a quick dip and a steam, no issue there, it was clean and super easy to find thanks to the signage. The food, both dinner and breakfast, was delicious. We were genuinely impressed with the quality of the food- never too sure what hotel meals may be like. The produce used was fresh, the cooking imaginative and the presentation equally appetising. Finally, all staff we encountered were friendly, helpful, smiling and professional. All in all, this was a delightful overnight stay. I would definitely recommend Merchants’ Manor to friends and family.

If you like cobwebs, shabby furniture, burnt potatoes, loose taps and poor service then this is the place for you! Arrived on Sunday afternoon for a Sunday night stay, a Christmas present from our daughter, there is no reception just 2 screens where you check in, there was a member of staff there and she assisted with the check in....and took £50 for incidentals...anyway we was taken to room 45 it had shabby furniture and the remote for the TV had no back, it was also stifling hot. We decided to go for a sauna and swim, there were gowns and towels in the room, but no slippers...the pool was cold, the sauna was gone and the Jacuzzi was laughable with just one jet working...ah well things must improve right? er no. We was booked for dinner at 7pm, we went to the bar and ordered some drinks and was told to make ourselves comfortable and they would come and get us...at 7.30 I went and asked if we could eat, we were shown to a table and then ignored...at 8pm we ordered our starters and our mains, the menu was very limited, we opted for the roast beef...when we did eventually get our meal how we laughed...the potatoes were burnt beyond belief...but apart from the potatoes the meal was very good. We then ordered more drinks, which arrived wrong, oh how we laughed again. We got back to our room @9.30pm. We had a terrible nights sleep the room was baking hot with no way of cooling down. Next morning breakfast was ok, no orange juice which was a little disappointing and then we tried to check out on the rubbish screens and ended up getting a member of staff to help, we voiced how bad we had slept and we were informed that room 45 is known to be warm because of its location...so why the hell did they put us in there? We since found out that our daughter had paid extra for a room upgrade for us, something they obviously did not do, its such a shame as we stayed there before and it used to be so lovely now its just ripping people off, please avoid.

Being from Falmouth originally, planned this trip to visit family, was wanting to stay at st Michael’s but saw a fair price to stay at merchants manor and the merchants had a high standard in my mind as had used gym and swim facilities here before and dined here. Upon arrival I was surprised to see the reception desk has been removed and replaced with 2 self service machines, I tried to check in with both machines and neither worked.. we’d just been travelling for 2 days and really wanted to get in to our room, had to hunt down a member of staff to check us in manually.. would’ve saved a lot of time to just have a receptionist again and the lack of human presence felt quite unwelcoming. The photos of the rooms on the website looked really nice, well upon entering the room we were left disappointed, the bed was lovely, no complaints there but the wardrobe and desk area looked like it had been taken from an old travelodge.. really big let down aesthetics wise, bathroom was very nice, cleaning could’ve been better ( ex hotel housekeeper myself). The room on a whole just felt a bit bare and basic.. not what you expect when paying £140 a night! Decided to go down for a swim, the pool area has been refurbished since I last visited. Well, it may look nicer to the eye but the tiles are falling off the bottom of the pool and there is no jacuzzi or sauna? Had we known this we wouldn’t have booked. And would’ve stayed elsewhere. Massive massive let down. Evening meals are totally over priced and underwhelming, breakfast self service selection was very nice, however the cooked options are lacking in diversity, everything aside from the vegan involves egg in some form and the 4 breakfasts we had were very average. Staff were very lovely but the customer service all feels very rehearsed and not genuine. The parking situation is very frustrating, we returned at around 16:30 and the carpark was full, you could see the gym and swim members were using all of the car parking spaces, had to wait 20 mins for somebody to leave so we could park! No parking around anywhere else On the whole a very average experience at a very premium price! Will pay the little extra for st Michael’s next time as it’s so much better.

The blurb for this survey was so you can ‘evolve from the feedback’?? Doesn’t look like it: reading Tripadvisor reviews (sadly after we stayed) reflect every complaint I have about our stay & that’s way back into last year… OK: 1. Soulless & badly signed check in procedure, not a welcoming person in sight. 2. Ridiculous not to have tea & coffee making in room. Having to dress to walk miles to get a frankly execrable mug of lukewarm tea was not a good start to the day. 3. Laudable to push Cornish spirits in the bar but, as the barman agreed, wanting a Rusty Nail is not exceptional & an expensive Cornish honey rum just doesn’t come near. 4. Settle in room for night & get THREE fire alarms over about 30minutes. No staff around to check with, or on us. Very unsettling & very badly handled. 5. Breakfast staff pleasant & perfectly fine apart from lukewarm, disgusting coffee. 6. Room (27) perfectly comfortable BUT having a burning hot towel rail so close to the toilet bowl that you have to constantly lean away from it to avoid being burnt. Also gave a chance to see how much mould was growing on the shower cubicle tile grouting on floor & walls. Not inviting. Overall, what was once (the old Greenlawns), &basically still is, a beautifully situated & decorated building with a good spa centre & plentiful parking. . It’s just that it now has so little human warmth or feeling of welcome you leave feeling empty & dissatisfied. Certainly won’t be trying it again till it finds its mojo again.
