We visited the Crown Inn during half term, booking direct via the pub’s website. This was cheaper than Booking.com.
We stayed in the King’s suite which was lovely. It had its own sitting room and four poster bed.
The bar was cozy and as we had booked the B&B plus evening meal package the staff booked us a lovely table on arrival.
The staff were so friendly and we were made to feel very at home.
Dinner was excellent, high quality ingredients extremely well presented and cooked.
The service at dinner was also great.

The only reason I have not given 5 stars as it I feel it was not as good value for money as it could be.
For a room costing £185 per night there were no robes, toiletries were sparse and the tea and coffee facilities basic to say the least. There wasn’t any water or biscuits.
Also, at breakfast, unless you had the full English the other food was not as good value. I paid £3 extra for 1 mushroom to go with my bacon sandwich.
Toast and anything apart from tea and filter coffee was also extra.
All the ingredients however were again excellent.

I would definitely stay again if we were in the area but probably not pay for the suite next time.

Visited the Crown with my husband for lunch and it was very good .The hummus and toasted pitta bread was delicious and we shared that . A steak pie with fresh vegetables and mashed potato followed . The pie was lovely ,flaky pastry which I find better than short crust as that’s too stodgy. Everything was very hot and vegetables cooked just right . The staff were extremely polite and very friendly and the whole experience was great thank you from Anne Pitts

The Crown is an excellent example of a diligently run, first class, gloriously historic pub restaurant and hotel with attention to detail and courteous hospitality at its core.
My bedroom was scrupulously clean with very fine linen.
The bar area is comfortable and spacious.
Dinner was a delight. The menu is enticing.
The freshest of ingredients from the surrounding countryside are prepared with verve and elan by the proprietor.
The wine list is sensibly priced with excellent choices; but the Vins du Patron are exactly what one expects (and so often fails to find) : classic examples of really good white Burgundy and claret.
Although my room overlooked the main road to Petworth don’t be concerned. Traffic stops at 10.00pm and doesn’t creep into one’s consciousness until after 8.00am by which time the impeccably cooked and presented Full English (local eggs of course) is served by charming waiting staff.
Just indulge yourselves and go!

Merits: wonderful building and friendly staff. Beware group booking for a function at a busy time of year. On the strength of our previous positive experience,we booked another special luncheon for 22 people in December. Disaster! With a full pub and an insufficient number of staff, the focus lay in looking after the guests in the main pub. We were side-lined and shortchanged. We waited almost an hour for our first course to be served; the soup was lukewarm and the salmon starter minute and inadequate. No staff were available to give any service. We experienced completely haphazard serving of the mediocre main course, which was accompanied by uncooked vegetables (not even al dente). Compensation was offered in the form of tickets for Burn's Night, which we felt inappropriate, and declined. The large bill was reluctantly paid in full. The experience was most unsatisfactory and, sadly, we will not be returning.

We wanted a nice night away. Eat and drink in the pub and stay over. Good pub and good food. However, when I booked I asked for the best room and specifically wanted a king bed - and at £180 I assumed it was nice!! We could literally hear every single word that was said in the bar below. When I asked the staff they offered to give me £20 off (for no sleep!). The only way we could could get any sleep was to move rooms - to a smaller bed! So, we set out to have a nice night away in a kingside bed and got a bad night away in a smaller bed!! Will eat here again but not stay. Not worth the stars it has or the money!

A lot of the reviews mention this but they told me they had not any issues with this before.

Worst food ever and terrible customer service!!! Keep away!!

We had lunch there and ordered a humus appetiser £4.75, a vegetable burger £14.50 and a fish and chip £14.50.

The burger was bell below standard as the putty was soggy and tasteless with a terrible consistency when eating eating, My wife only took 2 bits out of it before stopping eating it and I took 1 small bit to sample it and my god was it awful.
When we told the waitress about it as she was clearing all of our plate (as no-one even came to see us during our meal to check that everything was ok - and the place was really not busy) she apologised about it and took our plates away, She then came back with he desert menu and offered a free desert as compensation.

As my fish and chip was equally of a bad quality with a undercooked batter and a fish and chips that felt like they were frozen we decided not to continue eating in this place and declined her gesture of a free desert and asked for the bill, which to my astonishment did not have any reduction in the price to reflect our clear unhappiness.

I then asked the waitress to see what her manager could do about it and when she came back she once again apologised and said that he would be ready to offer us the humus appetiser for free instead as the manager,Dan, said that there was nothing wrong with the burger and that it was only my wife who did not like it and that we should be happy to even receive something for free.

The waitress was really very uncomfortable about the situation as Dan did not even want to deal with our complaint but instead just ignored the situation and our young waitress to deal with it.

I simply told her not to worry about it and paid the full bill but what a shamble!

I definitely would not recommend eating there, especially when there are so many other great place to go to right next to them, such as the Swan Inn!

Thank you for taking the time to review and share your disappointment at the service you received on your recent visit. As a family business we work hard to deliver a wonderful experience for all our guests which is reflected in our many other reviews both here and in those we receive in person. We are sorry that on this occasion we were unable to meet your expectations and that our goodwill gesture was insufficient. Good but not great! Shows potential!

For a five star AA rating as an Inn - The Crown Inn could do with some fine tuning in regards to attention to detail at this level.

Aesthetically as an establishment the property is beautiful - steeped in history.

The lounge, bar and restaurant are truly beautiful. Bar staff, friendly enough.

If staying overnight, there is no clear signage of where check in is located.

When booking the stay, the details stated parking onsite at the property however all the bays directly in the Crowns parking remit were taken. Again it may be worth looking at reserved signage for overnight guest parking.

We were based in the bedroom named Coombe - the spelling of the bedroom name is incorrect to that on the bedroom door key.

With the bedroom described as contemporary luxury, sadly it was rather lackluster. The bathroom requires attention in aspects of maintenance and deep cleaning (shower head and shower unit).

Limited mention throughout the Inn and bedroom in relation to sustainability, one note in the bedroom on towel usage.

Breakfast was good, however there was only one member of staff managing four breakfast tables and hunting party.

The quality of breakfast itself was very good.

However I would recommend setting up a juice station and or continental breakfast station.

Don't get me wrong this is a lovely establishment but with an AA five star Inn rating, we did expect more.

We have been to The Crown previously on several occasions, including a stay for one Christmas.
Thoroughly enjoying the great setting, its history, food, drink & the relaxed atmosphere on every occasion.

For early March my husband & I booked to have a night away with friends (including dinner) to celebrate my 50th.
Amy & Daniel, were faultless in the planning & execution of the weekend away.

Having arrived on the Saturday afternoon, with a friendly greeting, we eased into the start of our weekend. Firstly, enjoyed a few drinks together while watching the 6 nations rugby with some of the lovely locals.

For our dinner party of 6, we had reserved a round table- Kicking the night off with a cocktail each. Then chose from a superb selection of wines to have with dinner.
The food was of its usual high standard from starter to desert.
The hotel rooms were also of the very high standard we have come to expect… complete with fluffy towels, very comfortable beds & anything else you should need.
We finished off a very enjoyable weekend with the outstanding choice of cooked breakfast with fresh coffee/tea & fresh squeezed orange juice.

I can’t thank The staff at The Crown enough
& would highly recommend it for all manor of celebrations & equally for a quiet/relaxing Sunday lunch, night out or a quiet pint.

Love this hotel, timeless experience with some exceptional staff.
Great location as close to Goodwood, an easy return for us.
I have found this time that some restoration is required in respect to the chairs in our room and dining area. Plus a good clean in the dining area including the tables (some quite sticky)
Memorable member of the staff is Louise, a ⭐️
Breakfast lady very kind and accommodating.

We had a fantastic Sunday lunch here today. The food and service was amazing, and the staff went out of their way to be friendly and helpful. We all had the roast beef which was delicious and came with copious trimmings! Thank you, we will definitely be back.

No Secure Car Park . Outside the Crown there are plenty of spaces between the Inn and the Green . There are also plenty of spaces alongside the Green. We parked outside and were about 10 -15 paces from the front door
