I can't believe this is classed as 'Four star' or has the positive reviews it does. I paid $280 for one night in a two bedroom unit with a work colleague. To say the website and online photos on various booking websites are seriously misleading is an understatement. From the grumpy reception person to the terrible beds, run down decor and general run-down nature, this place disappointed. The photos of the rooms, swimming pool and general location must all be many years old as our experience did not look anything like the photos online. Most of the curtains we off the rails, the decor was askew, the towels were stained, the floor was stained, one bed totally collapsed (fortunately there were more beds than occupants) the outdoor furniture on the balcony was in terrible condition, the ironing board was stained and broken, there were suspiciously placed hand marks on the TV, the entire feeling of the place was gross and had a feeling of unkept-ness.
Fortunately we didn't have to spend much time in the room or I would have moved on somewhere else. I am sure it would suit some people but the price and online imagery give a very different level of expectation to what we experienced.

Good location, expected it to be a dive based on recent reviews. However was pretty clean some odd marks and stains: Bedding was clean, bed and pillow comfortable and it was very quiet. Rooms quite hot at night without aircon however a fan was provided which helped. Stayed 2 nights, would have liked clean towels. Only met one guy at check in who was ok. The phone booking service was terrible and really let’s the place down. Overall better than expected and would go again, we stayed in room 1

There was no smoke alarm in the unit. Cutlery consisted of 3 teaspoons, and there was the barest minimum in the way of crockery and utensils. There was some disgusting food in the freezer - looked like it had been there for some time. Couldn't close bathroom window because handle was broken. Soap dispenser wouldn't work. Lino in bathroom badly stained with mould. Carpet stained and thread-bare in places. No choice of pillows, so had to sleep on one that was most uncomfortable.

We booked this motel because it advertised a children's play area, was a good location for visiting family on the North Shore, could supply and porta cot and had a 3.5 star rating. The only thing that was true is the location. It is in an excellent location for the North shore. The playground consists of two swings and a very old trampoline, the porta cot was broken, and there is absolutely no way this is anything other than a one star hovel, charging 4 star prices. We were met at reception by a man in his dressing gown, he tried to charge us more for the porta cot which we had already booked and was part of our booking, he was very unhelpful and looked unclean and unkempt. We had a one bedroom unit for two nights - the floors were grubby, the lino in the bathroom and toilet mouldy and filthy and the whole place is just run down and past it. The cleaning staff probably try their best, but you cannot bring this place back up to an acceptable standard easily. The unit was not serviced the whole time we stayed - no offer of clean, dry towels, beds not made etc. If we could have found another place we would have moved, however it was school holidays and there was nothing available. Would never stay here again and would not recommend anyone else does either.

If you make a booking to stay here, prepare to be scammed. We booked 3 units here to attend a family funeral near by and like a lot of the people who left reviews here, found themselves booking it as everything else was fully booked. Don’t repeat our mistake. Looked great on the website but it was totally different in reality. At the very last minute, two of our unit bookings were cancelled due to the units ‘flooding’. This translates to: they could sell the room at a higher rate for emergency housing and never mind the person whose booking they cancelled. What a nightmare this place is. I have travelled the world and NEVER have I stayed in such awful accommodation as this. We were the unlucky ones who actually kept the booking. When I went to pick up the key from reception, there was a policeman inside and he had locked the door. Not really reassuring to have a policeman feeling that unsafe, that he needs to lock himself in reception. I wonder who or what he was hiding from. They also tried to charge us twice for one unit and when that didn’t work, they cancelled the booking due to ‘flooding’. I asked for an accessible unit for my 90 year old mother. It wasn’t accessible at all. The unit itself was FILTHY & cold. Mouldy bathroom floor, a bathroom window that didn’t shut, hairs everywhere, big holes in the carpet & generally grimy. We went in the next day at 10.00am to ask for refund as the whole experience was so diabolical. The ‘manager’ appeared in reception in his dressing gown!! Yet to see our refund. Like the other review said, Fair Go needs to investigate this place. Someone needs to shut this place down, it’s totally unprofessional, dirty shoddy and dangerous. How do we do get it removed from every search engine? Oh and if you want to ring them, they very conveniently NEVER answer their phone - probably sick of all the complaints they must be getting. Ps - it’s not even worth the 1 star rating.

We checked in for a 2 day stop overduring the xmas break with the kids after promising a pool and bbq that night. The pool was out of service and looked like its been out of action for a while and we were not allowed to use the BBQ as it was located in the pool area.
The upstairs room was completely unsafe for anyone with young children, chairs, beds etc next to windows with flimsey fasteners and no keeps.
On first look the room was clean but when you actually look it was filthy.
The person on reception refused to give us the managers number or emal as they weren't onsite.
All in all after 8 years travelling NZ this is by far the worst place we have ever stayed. Do yourself a favour and avoid at all costs.

We spent one night here in December 2022 and would not have stayed another night. The photos on the website are very misleading, The pool was a vibrant green and unusable the play equipment was rusty and unsafe looking.

Most of the other units were full of emergency housing people who hung around watching arrivals and smoking. The rooms were not very clean, everything was stained including the bedding. There were holes in the curtains and an unemptied ash tray on the little deck, the shower was moldy, there was chewing gum on the coffee table and the entire unit smelt of stale food and damp.

It was right on busy Taharoto Road and very noisy. But the very worst thing and the reason I would never stay there again was the complete lack of service. We had travelled all day and arrived hot and tired. There was no one at reception and a note to phone a number on the door. When I phoned the woman who answered was very difficult to understand, she gave me a code for a lock box and got very snippy when I could not understand what she was saying. Eventually I got the lock box open but there was no key for the room we had booked. This made the woman on the other end of the phone even more annoyed and she told me to take another key. I said I didn't think this level of service was acceptable but she completely ignored me. We were then left to find our room under the slightly scary gaze of several homeless people.

There was no compendium with helpful information and tips, no safety notice about what to do in the case of fire, no sprinklers (we were upstairs and would never have got out in a fire), no wifi, no fans or heaters and absolutely no service.

Takapuna is a difficult place to find accommodation but you are better to move further afield than stay at this place

Such a terrible place to stay, Photos on-line are misleading. The 1 bedroom unit we booked for 3 people was disgusting.
Sofa bed would not fully open up and when cleaner was called, as that was the only person around, we had to turn the sofa bed around to allow it to open up fully to set up. Obviously it had not been cleaned under it because there was old food and rubbish there. Springs on head end of the sofa couch were broken and when reported to cleaner, she said just sleep on it on the other side. Person sleeping on it in the end had to sleep totally around the wrong way.
Because the sofa bed was turned around it now blocked any entry or exit to the kitchen and bathroom so other guests had to walk through the bathroom to get to the toilet.

The shower head was broken and would not stay up. Rotten boards under the shower unit as when a shower was taken a pool of water would leak out of the shower door and cover the bathroom floor.

Unit was very dated, paint peeling everywhere. Door wasnt absolutely secure when locked. There was red splotches on the ceiling above single bed in lounge that we have no idea what it was.

When we turned up no room had been booked for us and when the cleaner phoned the manager she was rude and said that the payment had declined, she had sent an email saying that the booking was cancelled. I told her we had travelled from CHCH and that no email had been received stating this. After much delay they gave us unit 8.

Would never ever stay there again.

We stayed at Takapuna Motor Lodge years ago and it was wonderful so when I had to fly back for a visit, it was a natural choice. I should have read the reviews. This place has gone to the dogs. Office staff were extremely hard to find, so I emailed explaining that my tv didn’t work and the laundry facilities weren’t working. No reply, no attempt to fix anything. Couldn’t find anyone in the office! They were never there, probably in hiding!! Management was a farce. They only care about the kickbacks they’ve received from the Government to supply emergency accommodation to the homeless. Didn’t care about charging $150 per night for dirty rooms where nothing worked. Have emailed Takapuna Motor Lodge numerous times to complain about my stay and they haven’t even bothered to email back. Very disappointing. Will never stay here again, such a shame.

One star is too many.
Obviously had “guests” staying there that were courtesy on the government.
Booked for two nights but only stayed one.
Room, mattress and pillows stunk of smoke. Couch was torn.
TV was broken.
Smoke alarm missing.
Guy in reception was more interested in his Skype call than dealing with guests - should be fired.
My advice is don’t even think about it and if you have a booking cancel it now.
