Detailed Reviews
Just stayed at The Peace and Plenty and absolutely loved it. The uniqueness of each room, the attention to detail (sherry in each room) Breakfast was high quality and great choice. Would highly recommend staying there rather than Auckland, and it's only a short ferry ride, if you do want to spend time in the city.

We spent one night here. This is an old villa very nicely decorated. I believe it is 100 plus years old. All the decor is in the style of late 1800's to early 1900's. It is an amazing place to stay and the hostess is very gracious and charming. All the rooms have there own on suite. Breakfast is served in the dinning room where you are able to meet the other quests. Beds very comfortable.

After arriving in NZ we spent two nights in this lodge. It is a perfect location, quite, close to the city centre and to the beach. The host is really nice and helpful . She offers a really good breakfast.

All nice, clean and good atmosphere.

The house is beautiful and situated in a great location, but this is rather spoiled by the proprietor, Judy. We found at least 20 ants under pillows and sheets in our bed. Judy offered us a new room, but tried to partially charge us for the original room as well. The next morning when we went down for breakfast, she looked at us as though we were intruders. Felt unwelcome our entire stay. Also: no way to contact owner at night, weak lock on bedroom door, and could see into room through keyhole from the hallway.

+1
We made our booking 10 months earlier in February for our one night here. At that time it was possible to book any room so I picked Victoria ($385NZ) because it was upstairs and I liked the photo showing its light "colour scheme of primrose and cream" and that it had a "Private balcony with unhindered views of views of Mt Victoria and the Waitemata". However we were put in the ground floor Windsor room which was dark and did not have a balcony. The owner at first insisted that Windsor was our room, but I showed our confirmation from her. She seemed confused and told us that she had already allocated our room Victoria another person. We didn't want to unsettle the owner so we had to accept the wrong room. We didn't like the dark wall paper and furnishings or the fact we had no balcony in the Windsor room. We felt trapped in our room. There was no welcoming spacious area outside our dark room.
It appears that this B & B has seen better days with signs of wear and tear & is in need of maintenance. The breakfast room had some unfashionable, dated 1960's far too large chairs for breakfast. We could have overlooked the cheap toiletries, faded grubby tissue box holder, broken toilet seat, porch lights shining through all night via the front window into our bedroom and hearing guests outside our room, being woken up at 5.45am by other guests going out for a walk, if the owner was pleasant.
We don't eat or drink anything that is in open containers used by other people, such as the sherry & port in the room or the jam bowl at breakfast. These basic health regulations and laws changed some time ago to prevent contamination and health risks. That is why individual portions are served in which case the remainder is disposed of after the meal or sealed individual servings as seen in cafes for sugar etc. are the norm.
Apart from the rubbish of telling us twice we got a free upgrade, (both rooms listed the same price $385NZ on the Internet), the last straw when we were leaving was the owner tersely asking me what was wrong with the bacon. I was puzzled and she continued... " you didn't eat it all!" So I politely replied I only felt like one piece, I could not eat two pieces. My husband and I were shocked. It was as if I was in boarding school in the old days! I didn't want to upset an older lady so I didn't have the heart to say the breakfast was ordinary. I am sure she did her best with it but we couldn't wait to leave.
Makes me wonder about some of the positive reviews from people who have travelled very little on Tripadvisor. It's so much easier not to bother writing about a disappointing experience.
Sorry but the whole experience was not what we expected especially at this price. . Just didn't feel any warmth or welcome unlike everywhere else in New Zealand. But then this lady is not a New Zealander. I fully expect that my review will have an aggressive response from this lady in keeping with her other responses to negative comments and her manner to us.

Response from judydevonport, Owner at Peace and Plenty Inn
Responded 26 Jan 2017
It was disconcerting to read your review when we discovered that you hadn't had a great experience staying with us. Also that you would assume you would receive an aggressive response. Why, we ask ourselves? We have consistently received the 5 star Qualmark rating every year since 2003, for "guest and hosted" and "sustainability", so we are confident that our hotel measures up to their high standard. The entire hotel was redecorated in January last year and the Windsor room bathroom refurbished so we can't really understand the title of your review. We regard the Windsor Room as our best room in the hotel and the new burgundy wallpaper was specially chosen to create the right ambience for an 1880 villa. Although it doesn't have direct access to a verandah, as you say, the wide wrap-around balcony which affords the best views of the garden and sea is positioned just outside the Windsor room - making it private for guests staying in that room. On our website we do say "Please note that while every endeavour is made to give you the room you have requested we reserve the right to be able to change your room. If you wish to make a special request please contact us directly". We re-allocated the rooms that night to accommodate a family so they could have adjoining rooms and so we upgraded you to the best room in the house thinking you would be very pleased. We appreciate that everyone has differing tastes and ideas of style. We personally love our sunny dining room with its antique furniture, silver tea service and spode china. We can't address all your issues as its clear that you have only sought to see the negative. For example having to much bacon for breakfast should be a bonus rather than a negative one would think....We use "Linden Leaves" toiletries in the hotel, a New Zealand company that produce high end products. At "The Peace and Plenty Inn" we do our utmost to ensure our guests have a wonderful stay - over 20 years in business is testament to this. We are sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your visit with us but we do feel that your review is misleading and not really accurate. To many "alternative facts" which we hope we have addressed in this response.

Just across the bridge from busy downtown Auckland lies the quiet town of Devonport and the beautiful Peace and Plenty B&B. It is truly an elegant and peaceful escape from the noise and traffic of the city. The lovely setting, the short walk to the beach, the beautiful rooms, baths, and the unsurpassed breakfast (don't miss this!), make this B&B not just a place to stay, but a true vacation destination for visitors to the Auckland area. The comfort of home, friendly advice and the professional, warm care of a renown inn make the Peace and Plenty my top choice.

What can I say??
We stayed in the Garden Room over the weekend of the Adele Concert and the Bath Towels smelt of "Mould".
The Bathroom was not cleaned to a level that you would expect from a five star category B&B
On the Peace & Plenty website, Judy claims to have many Marketing skills to assist the novice traveler but when questioned about suitable sites to visit around Devonport her answers were very poor
Don't ever stay there if you are over-sized because she was very rude to me with some of her comments
Feel like the proprietor's been in the job a little too long!!!

This is a nice, comfortable, relaxing little boutique Inn. Nothing to complain about but it wasn't my favorite. It has comfortable rooms (I stayed in the Devenport room). Beautiful large windows overlooking the flower garden, comfortable bed, good internet but very tiny bathroom that clearly used to be a closet that was remade into a bathroom. The room was nice but something about the entire establishment just wasn't warm and inviting. Hard to put my finger on it. The fake but real looking flowers in the room, the used bottle of hand cream, the stale biscuits for in-room tea, the elaborate, beautifully set breakfast table with nice china but rather common, lackluster breakfast...the place looks like it should have a lot of warmth, but in my opinion, it didn't. I think it's perfectly nice and comfortable and I would recommend it for couples. But I wouldn't stay there again. I've traveld all over the world, over 130 countries and I know what I like and don't like. I didn't really like this place. I just didn't feel very welcome there. It felt cold and uninviting. But it's just me. I can't give it 5 stars because of what I just described and what I felt there, but most people probably would. In my opinion it just needs more of a friendly, welcoming staff perhaps and some greater warmth thrown in to match its decor.

Oh dear Oh Dear, perhaps the other people at the breakfast table were not so friendly towards you as they were still somewhat tired from you banging and ringing to door bell instead of using the door phone and waking half the house up at just gone 5.30a.m. in the morning (even though I was waiting for you to phone through to my room from the front door.) We advertise that the Devonport Room has a small compact bathroom and price the room accordingly perhaps the company who reserved to room for you did not make this clear or thought because you were a single traveller this would not be a problem. The bathroom was custom built to the room. I am so sorry you did not enjoy your stay with us.

I had high hopes for this B&B but was disappointed. We were told on arrival that we were interrupting Judy's afternoon tea but she did take us to our room. Lighting in the room was terrible and there was no electrical outlet in the bathroom. When we asked for a dinner recommendation, we were handed menus. That night there was a wedding party staying at the B&B taking picture, etc. Judy definitely seemed out of sorts, The next morning breakfast was forever and Judy said none of her staff had shown up. Maybe this was just a bad day for her but it did not make for a pleasant stay.

Response from judydevonport, Owner at Peace and Plenty Inn
Responded 28 Jan 2015
Although we were pleased to read that this reviewer had obviously heard of the Peace and Plenty's fantastic reputation beforehand, unfortunately their review seems to be based on assumptions which then resulted in confusion on their behalf. We're sorry to hear they felt as though they were interrupting my afternoon tea, when in fact the case was that we had a booking of High Teas which we do most weekends between 12.00-4.00. One of my staff members would have answered the door and then told me they'd arrived, as I always see to guests personally. When guests are checked into their bedroom, they are welcomed by bedside lights being on to set the ambience of the room. It is then standard procedure for me to go through our extensive compendium book. The main things I focus on in this book are the Welcoming letter, medical emergency contacts and our own emergency procedure and evacuation points. Also, I spend time explaining to guests the telephone numbers to contact me 24hrs a day, regardless of whether I am in the property. Finally, we list 6 local restaurants who are very happy to offer our guests 10% off their restaurant bill. I explain the types of menus these restaurants provide, but also state there are many options. We do not have individual menus in rooms, so we're not sure what these guests thought they were shown. I feel this reviewer must have overlooked light switches and plug sockets in their room, as we have excellent lighting in all rooms which is compulsory for our 5* Qualmark rating. If they were unsure, then we wonder why they didn't bring this to our attention at the time so we could have shown them where the switches and sockets were in their room. There was no wedding party staying at the Peace and Plenty on the same night these guests stayed. In fact, the wedding party had already checked out and I kindly offered for them to come back to take photographs due to possible deterioration in the weather. This offer was taken up but they were only here for aprox 1 hour until they went to their reception venue at 6pm. Normally, our guests enjoy seeing a wedding party as it brings a sense of excitement to the place and usually they go out of their way to congratulate the happy couple. We don't understand why the comment was made that breakfast took 'forever'. We offer a friendly good morning welcome and give the choice of tables for you to sit at. There is a buffet table for you to serve yourselves from straight away including a selection of cereals, fresh fruits, yogurts and juices. Coffee and a choice of teas are offered, bought to your table straight away along with our cooked breakfast menu which is then made to order whilst you enjoy the start of your breakfast in the relaxed atmosphere we provide. I'm not sure how these guests judged that I was 'out of sorts', bearing in mind they had only just met me! I know that my staff are all brilliant and have never let me down, so I'm not sure where this comment came from either. In conclusion, we feel that this is an unfair review which was written on assumptions that were not factual.

There were parking spaces in front on the street. we loved our room on the ground floor, which had a private entrance in the back from the garden. The room was spacious, had it's own bath, plenty of counter space & sink....kitchen area if you want to cook. There was a small refrigerator as well. We loved it! Have fun!
Hi Please have a look another look for our website, unfortunately I am not allowed to list the address here. We are still fully functioning. Thanks
