Detailed Reviews
We were lucky enough to stumble upon this delightful property when looking for accommodation near Westonbirt for a concert we were attending. Simon & his team couldn't have been more helpful, recommending taxi firms and even offering us a lift to the concert! We decided to bring our bikes and Simon allowed us to store these in the beautiful courtyard area - so pretty. It was an easy cycle and really made our stay even more memorable. The team at The Angel were very welcoming and friendly and the breakfast was to die for! The rooms are beautifully decorated, beds comfortable, shower powerful and hot with big fluffy towels. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and know where we'll be heading next time there is a concert on! Thank you Simon and team :-)

We ate here today and it was really good food and very reasonable. Service very efficient and pleasant. My husband enjoyed his Eggs Benedict and I had pancakes with berries and maple syrup. As soon as people left this very busy cafe, the table was cleared and cleaned.

At last, The Angel feels like its former self, with a lovely friendly atmosphere, if still a bit quiet in the evenings (3 tables of 4 dining last night). Chef Phil brings local produce and fresh fish back on the dinner menu (we had Channel . They offer a limited menu at the moment - but it's a matter of quality rather than quantity - 4-5 mains plus whatever catch of the day is, but the quality of the food, presentation and flavour is excellent. Leaning to fresher, less carb-laden food featuring the on trend ingredients such as quinoa and speciality leaves, as well as local produce - their own pork, vegetables and wild mushrooms from Wiltshire and Gloucestershire, fish from South Coast. In the evenings, the front restaurant is used, next to the woodburner. I hear that Sundays are now busier and the lovely back restaurant is opened up. The Angel suffered badly under the previous manager who didn't understand Sherston at all and who tried his best to ruin the great reputation for excellent locally produced food and stylish surroundings which the owners had built up. It certainly is heading back to its previous form based on our experience last night. (open for dinner Fridays and Saturday evenings and Sunday lunches - cafe rest of the week for Illy coffees, light lunches and excellent home made cakes).

Clean and pleasant but basic room. Nice bathroom. Felt a bit isolating..no service at all..just a room..good for one day but not for three. No clean cups and no means to wash up except in bathroom sink. No washing up liquid. No tea towels. No replaced biscuits..you get the idea.

We had wanted to stay here for over a year .We booked through Booking.Com and received a confirmation email. On the day of arrival we telephoned to say we were on our way and I thought then that the chap on the phone sounded curt.Upon arrival at 6.30pm we were told that there "was a problem" and that they had no rooms available.Management blamed Bookings.Com and said that they had had this problem before with them.I insisted that they(The Angel) find us somewhere to stay as we had driven from London. It was not until 10pm that alternative accomadation was found for us.it was 40 mins away and not at all the sort of place we liked. It was that or sleep in the car!We found the staff to be rude, aggressive and not at all sympathetic.we contacted bookings.com who told us that the Angel HAD received our booking and had confirmed back to them.It ruined our trip and we have still not received an apology

Arrived just after 3pm, got escorted to the room, the chambermaid was still insides - she informed us she would be another half an hour!! so we went over the road to the Rattlebone Inn. Upon entering the room, there were skid marks in the toilet and the duvet cover was left undone. There were also no bath towels in the room, just hand towels. My partner went to request some bath towels and a young lady brought up damp ones.... The floor boards in room 4 are extremely squeaky and thin. Breakfast was good and the bed was extremely comfortable, that's about it. I've stayed in many a B&B at half the price with much much better facilities and service. We will not return, it just is not worth the money in my experience at this establishment. Didn't mention any of this at the time as the place was being run by kids, no owners in sight, maybe apart from breakfast but we left soon after!

We do we start. We booked athe cottage because there were no rooms left, we explained we only wNted it for one night, maybe two. Are booking was in some doubt for quite a while, "oh it's been let that night would you like it for the next day"? This went on for a few weeks. It took us five and a half hours to get there, due to the rail strike, we let them know this while we were travelling.. When we got there, we had no grazing box, which we could have done with ,after a long journey. No Wi-if, no tea bags in the room and no working tele. We did have a good nights sleep. Come the morning, we went to the restaurant to find there was no breakfast for us either. So all in all, we paid £150 for a bed for the night, never agian, they let yow disabled people leave there bed and breakfast establishment without giving us any drink or food. Not the best place for disabled people. It reminded me of Fawlty Towers.

My husband and I drove 5 miles out of our way for breakfast. Having been before and enjoyed it. We arrived just before 11am. The waitress handed us the menu whilst we looked for a table but then along came a person obviously in charge and said sorry we finish breakfast at 11am! So presumably orders finish well before 11am? A week day in bleak January, it was not busy, yet they turn customers away. Nice place but not worth our detour, won’t be back!

Response from Dave N, General Manager at The Angel, Sherston rooms
Responded 19 Jan 2018
As the General Manager, I need to reply to this message. I was the one who dealt with this situation, and both myself and the waitress who were there at the time remember this very clearly, and importantly, very differently. First and foremost, there was no issue with the “service” which you received. You did not receive any “service” whatsoever, as you were sadly late for breakfast, meaning we did not serve you. So, to have a headline stating “shame about the service” is both misconstrued and misleading. Secondly, we will never turn business away, as long as you are there within our stated meal times. You say you were there before 11am; I was tending to the fire in the bar area, which is by the front door, when you arrived and asked about breakfast. You asked for the breakfast menus, and I immediately stepped in and said I’m terribly my sorry, we have stopped serving breakfast - it was 11.03am. We stop serving at 11am. We offered you coffees, or some of our cakes, but you decided to leave. We, as a business, need to stick to our stated meal times so that our chef can clear down and then prepare for lunch service, which starts 1 hour later. We have an incredibly small kitchen space, so that hour’s prep time is absolutely critical for time and space management. At 11.03, if we had said yes, this would then have had a knock on effect in being able to serve lunch on time - unfortunately not something I would be able to risk. I stand by my decision, wholeheartedly, especially having had a busy lunchtime which followed. We hope you managed to find breakfast elsewhere.

The room was ok - modern and comfortable. It'd be fine at £60-80 but the rate we were charged was £100 and breakfast wasn't even included. it was quite small and not to the standard I'd call "luxurious" as claimed on the website.
Staff were friendly and accommodating on arrival.
The room was above the cafe/restaurant and was very noisy until 11:45 because of a party. I think we should have been warned about this as we had a 2 year old with us trying to sleep.
Minor point - no coffee machine in the room as stated on the website/other reviews and no snacks in the room as stated in other reviews - maybe standards have slipped recently.
All in all poor value and a disappointment.

This is really a mini hotel rather than a B&B. Recently opened, the establishment is very well appointed. The rooms are individual and lovely. Plenty of goodies to keep you going, with tea & proper coffee facilities and the complimentary goodies box. The breakfast is made of locally sourced product (their own eggs, bacon, sausages etc) and extremely well prepared. Plenty of nice touches like daily cake left in the room. The welcome and service is genuine and attentive - this is an owner run business that truly cares about their guests and they bend over backwards to ensure their guests' needs are attended to. A very warm recommendation and we will return!

Hello,
We recently took on The Angel, and I can see this question wasn’t answered by the previous management.
We’re not even 10 mins by car from Westonbirt, you could very easily walk if you wished.
Many people stay in our hotel as we’re so close, it’s very handy for the concerts in the summer.
Sorry the reply was so late!!

Hi there,
Yes dogs are more than welcome in our lovely tea garden or on the seating in the peaceful high street but unfortunately we are not allowed dogs in the actual tearooms. Hope that helps.
Many thanks,
Tara Punter
Manager
Hi Judy,
Thank you for your question. Yes dogs are allowed in our tea garden, however if it happens to rain, dogs are not allowed in the tearoom itself. I hope that helps!
Hopefully looking forward to seeing you for lunch.
