Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I have had a few meals here over the years, after some big days fly fishing. The meals are very nice and they also make some really nice gourmet pies. Great atmosphere in the pub - when there are a few people there (sometimes you might be the only people in the pub). Good honest great value food.

If you want to stay a short distance away from the hustle and bustle of nearby Queenstown then this is the place! This quiet little town boasts an historic hotel that offers comfortable, clean and unique accommodation and a restaurant/cafe with food that melts in your mouth. The venison pies are the best we have ever tasted and we have tasted quite a few! Al, the chef and owner of the hotel is not only a great cook but also a really nice guy. On our way back from Te Anau we called in to buy our lunch again from Al and some takeaway for later as we knew his food was worth the stop!

While driving towards Te Anau, we stopped here for bite to eat and were pleasantly surprised. The current Garston Hotel, built the late 1930's, has a lot of character. However this hotel has been around since 1876, there are historic photographs of the hotel hung on the walls. There are tables inside and outside where you can eat. The food at Al's Cafe Diner is excellent, you can tell Alan the chef/host loves his job. We enjoyed fresh chicken pie and tea, but the menu also includes seafood and some curry dishes, all reasonably priced. It is a great place to catch a bite for lunch. Beer is also available there. We liked it so much the first time, we stopped there again on the way back. We did not stay at the hotel for night but it looked like it would be a quaint experience.

This is a dormitory style place. Booked in a panic because accommodation hard to get in this area. The room is worth $50 dollars anywhere else in NZ. Is a trap and a ripoff. Keep driving and get a better place that isn't ripping people off.

Stopped here a night .. dinner was outstanding w lamb shank falling off the bone ... blue cod delicious and some of the best ... dessert pav and sticky date pud. Alex and his amazing team couldn't do enough for us. Best sleep and clean comfy rooms. This would be a great destination for hens parties or ant celebrations. A hidden gem. Excellent coffee and too many choices of food.

I have to admit to being rather partial to a pie every now and again and lunchtime at the Garston Hotel was the perfect opportunity to partake. Five pies and some chips were consumed and there was a unanimous thumbs up which considering the discerning bunch of children we have shows how good they were. I had a chicken, cranberry and Brie pie which was delicious with pastry to die for. Highly recommended (and a great flat white too)!!!

This is a perfect stopping point on your way south from Queenstown. We stopped in for dinner and had one of the best pub meals I have had in a long time. Great tasting and resonably priced. We will definitely be back again.
