Our room was the Cottage, separate from the main lodge. The big plus was the fact that this is part of a working farm / orchard. The hosts and their 3 young kids are all very friendly, but also give you loads of privacy. This was roomy and super comfortable. The bed and ensuite were great. There's a little fully-equipped kitchen in the living area. This came with fresh eggs, milk and pear-juice from the farm. They also let us pick fresh pears from the orchard and passionfruit from the vines just outside the door. We were allowed to wander round the farm, meet the animals and look at the great views over the valley. The bedroom area is divided from the living area with some very cool big sliding solid wooden doors, looks like they are upcycled from somewhere on the farm. The big triple glass doors open out to overlook the native-bushy gully, with fruit trees and natives mixed in all round. There's a sheep paddock right next door, woke up to sheep grazing near our bathroom window. We had a very lovely and relaxing stay, we were allowed to checkout late as well which was very handy for our plans.
We are definitely coming back here, it makes all the motels and hotels I've stayed at in the past seem cold and clinical. Thanks so much Timo!

Wow! Thanks for your comprehensive review! Awesome that you enjoyed your stay in our Shearer's Cottage. As you said, it is a completely different proposition to staying in a standard motel or hotel. I'm glad you noticed the doors! I actually made all the cottage doors myself. ;) We look forward to your next visit!

A hidden gem in Hope near Nelson, NZ! After our tramping during 3 full days in Abel Tasman National park (which is only 1h drive from the orchard), we relaxed in this oasis of pear trees, passion fruits, sheep, chicken, etc. Beautiful sunsets on the deck with a local glass of wine along with our amazing host Timo's personal story made our stay the most memorable. Incredibly well-designed and spotless rooms and common areas are a great reminder to come back and stay longer next time. Thank you Timo for having us, we'll be back !

It was brilliant to have you guys staying with us before you adventure in the Abel Tasman. We're glad you enjoyed it and that the experience left you with lasting memories. It was fun to hear French around the lodge (and for me to try some of my rusty language fragments...) We look forward to welcoming you back one day!

We arrived at this quiet hillside retreat to be greeted by Timmo, one of the owners. He was genuinely interested in chatting to us and went on to explain that there was a fully equipped large kitchen for us to use as well as a gorgeous sitting area outside with views over the rolling landscape and Tasman Bay. The house is pretty with well appointed bedrooms. Each is painted in a pale soft grey with wooden floors and pretty rugs. Our room had a balcony with a table and chairs to enjoy the sunshine and looked out into a paddock with chickens and sheep. The bathroom was as clean and fresh as the bedroom with plenty of hot water and a good shower. We drove back into Nelson ( 20 mins) for dinner in the Boatshed Cafe. A complete success. Fish and meat with happy attentive waiters! Two other tables of guests heard our UK accents and offered advice for the rest of our journey. Breakfast at Pear Orchard included home made granola, yogurt, homemade jams and delicious sourdough bread. A cafetière of coffee and homemade pear juice rounded off a delightful meal. We were sorry not to be staying for longer.

We stayed 4 nights at The Pear Orchard Lodge to meet up with some friends who are touring the country in a campervan and were in Nelson.
I’d elected for one of the ensuite rooms as I don’t like sharing a bathroom with people I don’t know (yes, fussy aren’t I!); however for a big group the set up would have been ideal. There’s a large communal kitchen and a lovely outdoor seating area which you can use too. We didn’t cook but saw several fellow travellers who did. I would describe the bedroom as rustic – it had everything you needed but the furniture was quite - well, rustic! For example the wardrobe was old fashion and tiny and there wasn’t much space to put your clothes. However it was very comfortable and Timo our host was lovely. We hired their electric bikes for a day for us and our friends and he helped us plan a route.

Thank you for your feedback. The Pear Orchard Lodge is indeed ideal for big groups hiring the venue exclusively for a memorable getaway. Most of our guests enjoy the bespoke design of the lodge which is indeed quite different to a standard motel setup - this includes a mix of modern and antique furniture. Great that you got to take our new e-bikes for a spin on the Great Taste Cycle Trail! This is a new service that started offering our guests this season and it proves to be quite popular... ;)

We were lucky enough to have the place to ourselves the night we stayed - Timo was welcoming and friendly, and then left us to enjoy our beautifully furnished bedroom and bathroom, plus the well set up kitchen/dining room complex, opening to the patio and lawn area. It’s all sparkling clean and very comfortable, and in a very good location with the orchard/rural setting making for a relaxed stay. Breakfast was absolutely delicious - that warm sourdough bread, the homemade yoghurt and of course the stewed pears from the orchard were such a treat! Highly recommended.

This is my second time staying at the Lodge, this place is perfect for the adventurer traveler as you are already on the outskirts of Nelson for early starts, the Lodge is quiet and well appointed. The beds are super comfortable and the place is spotless. Looking forward to staying there on my next trip to the Tasman Region.

We really enjoyed our 3 night stay at The Pear Orchard Lodge. Unless you need to be in Nelson city, staying in the Richmond/Hope district is much better for access to the Abel Tasman park, wineries and other nearby towns.
Timo and Olivia have crafted an excellent little lodge set-up here, a very relaxing place as others have said, surrounded by regenerating bush. Breakfast on the porch under passionfruit vines was a daily highlight. On quiet occasions when we weren't off in Mapua or the Abel Tasman, our daughter loved hanging out with the chickens or walking around the pear trees. All up, an ideal holiday base.

We're really pleased to hear that you and your family had such a good time here at The Pear Orchard Lodge. We couldn't agree more about what you say about the location being preferable to urban Nelson, if you can make do without the urban buzz. Come back some time in the future! Btw. we have just completed building an outdoor lounge, to make the lodge even more appealing for families and groups enjoying the peaceful location.

We were a group of 12, visiting for a 30th birthday weekend away. The lodge was absolutely perfect for us!
Great location, Great views, Great layout, and Great facilities.
It was perfect for us who just wanted to be in nature and spend quality time with friends.
We spent time sitting in front of the fire, having yarns and playing with the games available, all whilst in our robes which were also provided!
We also organised a private chef (Blair Marsh) who was able to cook an amazing 3 course meal for 12 within the kitchen facilities.
Timo was a great host, very welcoming, provided recommendations and helped us manage bookings. They also collected and put away a countdown order we arranged ready for our arrival.
Would also recommend getting some pear juice!
We will definitely be back. Highly recommend!
Georgie :)
Unfortunately we were having so much fun we forgot to take photos.
