An amazing experience in a combination of tradition and thoroughly modern hospitality. Te Koi is a beautiful and truly unique property. The owners, Ali and Ian are very friendly, considerate and thoughtful hosts. Attentive and always available, they give you the feeling of being a special guest, almost a family member. Te Koi exudes refinement and attention to detail. The interior is decorated with great taste and breathes harmony. The garden is incredibly well-kept. Rooms are spacious with their own terrace and blend heritage features with contemporary flourishes and boutique beds.
Icing on the cake, Ali is a talented chef. As French people we are particularly sensitive to the quality of meals. Ali served us the best food of our entire stay in New Zealand and Australia. The food and wine pairing concocted by Ian was simply exceptional.
If perfection is not of this world, Te Koi is not far from it...

Stayed here for 2 nights on our trip to New Zealand. One word sums it up - amazing. Ali and Ian are tremendous hosts; Ali’s cooking is sublime and Ian’s choice of wines to accompany the meal superb. Breakfast was also extensive with lovely fruit as well as cooked options. The location of the lodge, on the shores of the estuary provides amazing views of the surrounding countryside and the room was extremely comfortable offering a lounge, bedroom, bathroom and outdoor seating. The grounds are extensive and very well kept with an outdoor pool and a tennis court.
This is luxury at its best and somewhere I would definitely recommend to stay if in the area. Thank you Ali and Ian for making our whole trip extra special.

Our wildest dreams come true. My husband and I were celebrating my belated 60th birthday with two weeks in New Zealand. Our stay at Te Koi was spectacular. Ali and Ian were the consummate hosts, welcoming us like old friends, and even upgrading us to a villa. The property overlooking the estuary has been lovingly tended by the Metcalfes, whose attention to detail means that each gorgeous garden plant, each luxurious towel and sheet, and each paint color has been chosen with care. Breakfast and dinner were elegant affairs complete with wide-ranging conversation about travel, food, cooking, and art. Ali is a fabulous cook and was attentive to our dietary restrictions while introducing us to some local treasures. We enjoyed a day at Abel Tasman NP that included a kayaking excursion, so Ali provided us with towels that were less fancy than those in our villa just in case! (We didn’t go overboard, so the towels came back with us!) We would highly recommend Te Koi and hope to return some day.

Ian and Ali were superb at making us feel comfortable in their beautiful lodge. Breakfast and dinners were exceptional. Their suggestions for local side trips were spot on. When they realized our early departure plans would force us to miss breakfast, they rose early and prepared an exquisite savory croissant treat with fruit and coffee to go. Thank you, Ali and Ian, for making our last 4 days in New Zealand so special!

Our group of 6 adult siblings spent 3 nights here in February and it was a highlight of our 2 1/2 weeks in New Zealand. The rooms are lovely and have gorgeous views of the estuary. The gardens are amazing. But it is the hospitality of Ali and Ian that make this place sing. Ali is an amazing chef. After active days out in the beautiful Tasman area we so enjoyed returning to Te Koi for evening cocktails and dinner. I’ve never eaten so well. Just exquisite! Thank you Ali, Ian and team for taking such good care of us!

You go to New Zealand to stay at Te Koi in Nelson. If you have time to visit other places on the island that's a bonus.

Truly we have never experienced such fine hospitality. Our villa was lovely, offered everything we wanted along with an ocean view and abundant gardens. The property is beautiful with a lovely pool, tennis court and as I said, many gardens. However, the most memorable part of our visit was the exquisite meals prepared by Ali, a renowned chef. Daily breakfast and dinner are included in your stay. Dinner courses are thoughtfully paired with wine by Ian, who has a superb palate. As bonafide foodies we have never experienced finer dining, and we have dined all over the world.

It was our good fortune to find this luxury lodging and spend time with our gracious hosts, Ali and Ian.

Often with wine parings in meals one is presented with an overly lengthy description of wine, reasons for compatibility with the particular dinner course, facts about what side of the hill the grapes are grown, perhaps adjacent to a lemon orchard, and a description of best growing period during particular hours when the sun is shining during daylight savings etc etc. Such lengthy presentation interrupts dinner conversation and often is too much information.
At Te Koi instead however, you will find a succinct, enthusiastic description of the wine and why chosen, why it pairs so nicely with the accompanying dish.
This economy of words from sommelier Ian, combined with high quality wines is typical of all aspects of this remarkable lodge.

From the setting in gorgeous gardens on the Waimea estuary near Nelson, the accommodation is just marvelous.

Breakfast and dinner were for us in the main house and really is in a private home, filled with art, sublime wall finishes and colours. Dinners are actually dinner parties, with fellow discerning, interesting guests.

How seasoned chef Ali and hotelier Ian manage to make everything look effortless is simply astonishing. How can they them selves look amazing and be cheerful when (after pre-dinner bubbly and canapés) presenting 3 course meals with perhaps smoked this or that, complex sauces, flambé items, perhaps delicate ice wine to pair, all in a charming, stylish yet unpretentious setting, is beyond us.

The attention to detail is evident everywhere. A fire just lit, table candles with just the intimate hue, baskets of fruit, napkins presented artfully, the simplest yet elegant tall stemware, is so impactful with the numerous vases with flowers from the garden.

Oh…. did I say you can have a swim in the saltwater pool or a tennis game or simply relish in opening the blinds during the night so as to see the sky lit with the million stars? Depend on Ian to steer you to your interests: galleries, hiking, or an out- of- the way church with a lake view.

Do yourself a favour and plan a stay at Te Koi Lodge. You can see we are not alone in accolades for this amazing lodge.

Recently spent three nights at this wonderful unique luxury lodge and this incredible personalized service of the owners Ali and Ian. There lodge is well located for visits to Tasman Park, Rabbit Island, Arthur Mountain, and local wineries and art galleries. Ali a recognized chef personally prepares the meals and Ian select wines to go with the meal. At this lodge which is very personable you feel like you are visiting ones home. The meals if you want are served a communal ( privates are option) style which leads to wonderful conversations among guests. Ian goes out of his way to help plan your daily intinerary and suggest ideas. Great option for one looking at luxury lodge in a unique personal atmosphere in beautiful part of New Zealand.

Without a doubt, our stay at Te Koi was among the most memorable highlights of our (now) three times to NZ. We have traversed the north and south islands and stayed at many notable luxury lodges (Blanket Bay, The Lindis, Matakouri, Huka Lodge) and the food, hospitality, decor and warmth here surpassed them all. Ali and Ian were the consummate hosts and made our time there exceptional. Ali’s cooking is absolutely OUT OF THIS WORLD and is among the top meals we’ve enjoyed in NZ, and worldwide! (We have a running list and this is now on it!) We cannot overemphasize what a pleasurable experience this was and highly recommend a stay here as a MUST do.

This place is a gem! From the minute that we arrived to the moment of our departure we thought that we had died and gone to heaven. The setting is amazing. The property is located on a point on an estuary that is picturesque and makes for beautiful sunrises. The grounds are large, meticulously kept and filled with all sorts of unusual flowers, plants, a small orchard and a garden the produces much of what is served at mealtime. Speaking of meals, our breakfasts and dinners were prepared by the owners Ian and Ali, who are first class by all measures. They have been involved in the high end travel and hospitality business for more than 40 years and it shows with all aspects of this place. Getting back to the food, be prepared to have some of the best meals that you have ever had. Ali works with the freshest ingredients to prepare over the top food. Two of us are vegetarians and she was more than accommodating. Fine wine was paired with each course of dinner and was accompanied by a very knowledgeable explanation by Ian.
Ian and Ali are the best hosts that we have encountered in all our travels. I would highly recommend staying here.
