Our visit to Hiamoe Farmstay was an absolute delight. Our hosts, John and Toos, were most gracious and we felt so at home at their place.

The accommodations - bedroom and private bath - were comfortable and spotless. We were invited to enjoy our hosts in the common areas of their home to share good conversation and travel stories. The guest rooms offer privacy as they are separated from the hosts' living space and they only entertain one set of guests at a time.

John took us around the farm and explained every detail of running a sheep and dairy cattle operation. As a fiber artist interested in all things wool, my wife was most interested in learning all about raising, breeding, lambing, and shearing of the sheep, and John answered all of her questions in great detail. We were impressed with the amount of science and experience that goes into running his farm. I am more interested in the lamb when it appears at the table :) and Toos answered that call with a sumptuous dinner prepared while we toured the farm.

John took us out in his ATV with his trusty dog Jack and we herded a flock between paddocks.

Even if you're not crazy about sheep as we are, we HIGHLY recommend a stay at Hiamoe with Jack and Toos. Our only regret is that we didn't stay for a few more days.

Thank you so much for a glowing report ! Our guests are also gracious and Hiamoe Farm Stay only attracts genuinely interested people with enquiring . minds, not just a bed for the night The contrast, between what we do on a, , farm ,on an Island (Big Island !), somewhere in the Pacific Ocean, and us visiting the Smithsonian Museum, in D.C,,.is like comparing Chalk and Cheese ! The clams at Cape Cod sound very interesting too ! Go Well

Our two days with John, Toos and their boys has been the highlight of our 15-week trip to New Zealand. Made to feel completely at home from the moment we arrived, we were encouraged to be “hands on” and experienced and learnt so much (how to weigh a sheep!). We enjoyed delicious home cooking and were totally spoilt by John & Toos, who couldn’t do enough for us. Such a great opportunity to experience real “kiwi” farm life and unbeatable hospitality. We can’t recommend enough.

We arrived after dark but none the less Toos and John invited us for a cup of tea and a very engaging chat in front of the fire place. My partner and his sister speak little English and it was fantastic how much attention Toos and John payed to speaking clearly and slowly. We all felt very much accepted and at home. We had a good sleep in comfortable beds. The next morning was fantastic. It was raining on and off, they provided our “farm gear” and in the all terrain vehicle with John we visited this enormous and very versatile property. We have been laughing, learning a lot and also being able to help. Again John took all the time to clearly explain everything to us. I don’t think a farm visit can get much better. It was the highlight of my partner and sister’s visit to New Zealand. Lovely people. Thank you very much Toos and John.

My 2 teenage children and I had a most enjoyable one-night experience at this farmstay. Toos & John were gracious, lovely hosts who made us feel at ease and at home right away. Getting a little glimpse of life on a working farm was truly priceless. I think their farm is bigger than our neighborhood!

We had a fantastic stay at Hiamoe Farm with John and Toos and their sons.
The whole family are incredibly welcoming, hospitable and friendly people. They know a huge amount about farming and were happy to chat about all aspects with us.

Our 2 young girls enjoyed getting out on the four wheel drive and up close with cows and sheep. They got to help put up temporary fences and stomp through the mud. It was great to be able to show 2 city kids what happens on a farm and for them to experience something very different.

We highly recommend a visit to Hiamoe Farm and we will hopefully make it back soon.

What a find this place was! John and Toos - welcoming and hospitable hosts, a very relaxing stay. Excellent breakfast and nice treats for afternoon tea. Mum and 10 year old son had a fantastic time out on the farm, John made it very enjoyable and informative. Highly recommend staying 2 nights so that you can get a decent time on the farm. We will return :)

Three fantastic days experiencing life on a large farm. Had a go at shifting and weighing sheep and cattle, driving round on the back of a quad bike. Fantastic comfy bed and excellent home cooked and home grown meals.

A totally unexpected experience that is beyond description. We enjoyed the conversations and learning about life experiences - how it can be so different and yet very much still the same in essence. My children loved chasing the sheep around the paddock, feeding the dogs the bones from the delicious dinner (never thought parsnips could be so yummy...), assembling the dessert, and solving puzzles all through the night and morning; my husband has acquired new skills in opening and closing all manner of gates to the paddocks. Thank you John, Toos, and Edmund, for making us feel so welcome and for sharing your beautiful home, life, and farm with us!

I had a lovely weekend with John and Toos . I spend two days in the farm learning the real kiwi farm life. It was a great opportunity to learn about farming! I never did that before! It woke my interest on farming, so once back to my country (Spain)I would look to another farmstay!

The room was excelent and the conversation even better!

I will repeat the experience if I pass near by.

John and Toos are warm, personable and intelligent hosts. They delivered on everything promised in their website and more, much more. If you’re a Kiwi you will be so proud they represent our Country. If you’re from overseas you will find they are extremely well travelled hosts and understand many cultures. They have extensive farming experience and great knowledge of NZ. They are very flexible with your needs for a farm stay. We left wonderfully content after an evening of great food, warm company, sound sleep and delightful breakfast.
