The venue and the view are amazing. The shared kitchen is fabulous and well maintained. The bedrooms are small lbut the bed is huge and very comfortable. Bathrooms are clean and modern.
BUT.. there are no kitchenettes... the rooms only have a bed (unless you opt for one with a private bathroom) There is no boat that the caretaker will taxi you around on. There is no bar. Cereal, milk, bread and eggs are provided for you to make your own breakfast.
There are kayak, SUP and many very nice outside areas. The place is fabulous but does not have what the website says.
Make sure you take all your food - nothing available there

We needed to get out of the city for a weekend and my wife and I were delighted we chose Kawau Lodge. The whole thing was made so easy, as we were able to decide what time we would be collected by the Lodge's own boat.

Arrived in time for drinks and dinner, after having a relax in our room with private balcony. Amazing setting as we discovered the next morning when we woke, we were really away from the madness. Some great walks over the next two days, then we departed for Auckland which was a bit over an hour door to door.

Highly recommended, for beautiful scenery, top food, a bit of history, and nice walks. We will do it again

If you want a short winter break this location is an ideal place to go. Serene views, a quiet and serene location to get away to just minutes away from the mainland.
Our Hosts provided a lovely warm fire and great home cooked meal as part of the Experience. Would not hesitate to revisit or recommend this B&B

Thanks so much for the great review, we so enjoyed meeting you both and look forward to catching up again on the water. Kawau Island is such a magic place and super close to Auckland city, it's a great place for apartment dwellers to get away for peace and quiet from the city noises.

For our 10th wedding anniversary we wanted an island experience in Aotearoa New Zealand that matched the best of our many Pacific and NZ island experiences in the past. We thought nothing could match Stewart Island but Kawau matched for different reasons (Stewart Island is remarkable for scenery, flora and fauna). This two night experience treated us to Helen and Dave Jeffrey, our hosts, who were exceptional in every way. They catered for our every need and whim, amply supplying indulgences in local wine and quality food along with great conversations. We used their kayaks to paddle around inlets, walked extensively through bush to beautiful beaches via the quirky trails Dave and Helen have created on their exotic section, ate like royalty, then slept amidst the hauntingly beautiful territorial calls of night birds (including kiwi). Tranquil, remote (no cars, no shops, no hype) and only a short boat ride (courtesy of Dave), to the mainland. We took a shine to the swinging seat out over the harbour at Dave and Helen's and are now working on designing one for our home. A trip to Mansion House and walks through the Redwood and ancient forest on our last morning revealed new histories to us. Kawau is a gem that every NZer should experience, and visitors from overseas will love the NZ baches and retro vibe of the good life. A must visit for a perfect getaway.

This was a very pleasant surprise for us - it's a place that you can choose to be private and enjoy the natural silence of Kawau's bush, or meet and share with worldwide travellers over dinner. I personally loved the mix - and Helen is an amazing chef - she's humble but her food is oustanding. They make a point of catering to people's food preferences (they ask you before you arrive) - it's a personal touch that is reflective of the 'homestay' like experience that it is.
They run the place with the laid-back 'can-do' Kiwi attitude that is perfect in this setting. And if you want to go anywhere, Dave will take take you there in his boat.
As Aucklanders, we loved the sudden change in location and evironment so close (1 hour away!), meeting local and international travellers, sharing stories and experiences, all under the umbrella of Helen and Dave's hospitality.
A weekend felt more like a week!

We had a fantastic weekend getaway at the Kawau Lodge! The island was beautiful and very peaceful. Helen and Dave were wonderful hosts and looked after us with amazing meals! They were very accommodating and went the extra mile for us. We were very happy with our room, it was nice, cozy and super clean. The rate was very reasonable considering the location, accommodation and quality of the meals. We highly recommend this for couples wanting a romantic getaway or just some time out from a busy life style!
