Detailed Reviews
Host very welcoming, dorm tidy and beds comfortable. Windows not quite sound-proofed as they were said to be but all in all a great little hostel with great facilities for a decent price.
Short walk to the beach and Mt Maunganui so location-wise you couldn't ask for much more.

needed to stay overnight and in the middle of the main street was this backpackers. Friendly greeting, good amnesties, maybe a bit of noise at night, from traffic and people walking past. But it was cost effective, clean and tidy. Great having a bar outside the door, bakery etc

This place is great if you're a solo traveller.
The hostel has got all the necessary facilities.
The new owner is very friendly and helpful and makes you feel like at home. She's trying to make the place very cosy.

I absolutely loved my stay at mount backpackers. The staff (especially Rosie, Ash, Regina and Rob) are kind and incredibly helpful. The kitchen and bathroom is always kept clean and the environment is relaxed and welcoming. The location is perfect right on the main strip and only a 3 minute walk from the beach. I would highly recommend staying here especially if you are looking to stay long term in mount maunganui. Overall an amazing hostel and experience.

Hi there - you are so right about our location, cannot get a better place so close to the beach (a 1 minute walk) or downtown Mount Maunganui mainstreet - we love our location! Great to hear that you found out place super clean, we do try hard and it can be tough during rainy months or when we have so many people coming and going. Please come back and stay with us again!

We had a very bad experience in this hostel and did not get any sleep during our stay. The tiny dorm room we had to stay in was super crowded with 10 people in a small area. Apparently it is a big party place with screaming drunk people up to at least 1am in the morning. The stinky tiny room reaked of sweat and weed and the coming and going of party people left everybody up most of the night. Only 4 small toilets and 2 showers for about 30 people is just not enough. After travelling for over 10 months and staying in many places this was def one of our worst experiences.

We have 6 toilets and 4 showers. We don't like threats " either give us our money back or we will place a bad review" . If you're too old for a Backpackers and you want Hotel service then go stay somewhere else !!!!

Very excited to stay by the beach, fab location, friendly reception and good wifi but unfortunately that's where the good stuff ends. Our group of four was split into 3 separate rooms on arrival all very cramped with no spare space for anything. 2 of us were lucky to get a room with a bathroom attached and it had slightly more space. All the rooms were a mess of people's stuff, we were told they were tidy when they got cleaned but that was hard to imagine/believe. Two of us found sand already on our bed sheets and my partners bed had some one hanging out on it when we arrived. Kitchen space tiny and again a mess. Lots of long term occupants who'd spread there stuff into any available space.

I understand that this is a "party" hostel, but it was still too dirty and loud for me to handle.
Nothing in the kitchen had been washed, probably for days by the look of some of the food. The bed had many stains on it, and the large dorm room was very, very cramped. There were no windows and, although there was a small ventilation system, it really didn't do much of anything.
This isn't a knock on the place itself, but the other travelers there during my stay were unfriendly and, overall, I did not feel safe while staying here.
Location and wifi are great, but overall I'd recommend looking elsewhere.
