We very much enjoyed our three night stay: the Belmonte offers top quality and very good value. It's a good place to be based for access to Agrigento's temples, or for the beaches nearby. Our top-floor room was excellent, with direct access to the sun terrace, good air-conditioning, plenty of space, and an amazing bathroom, with a double shower, a real eye-opener. Good, free, wifi is always welcome - and the Belmonte has it.
Although parking in Favara can be difficult, especially on a Saturday afternoon, when there were many weddings, we always found a spot close to the hotel. But if you have a problem parking, the hotel will park your car for you. Service is very good - but subtly understated. If you wish to discuss what is happening in the area the owner has many good suggestions to make. And if you want to be left alone, that will also be accommodated. I like that style.
The Belmonte's restaurant is top-notch: it's a little more expensive than an typical Italian dining venue, but also of a much higher standard. In two weeks of staying in Sicily we never saw a more attractively served meal. The fish dishes were particularly good, and the house red wine is superb. You can dine outside in a little pedestrianised alley in front of the hotel, or in the elegant, modern, dining room. We chose outside on each occasion.
The Old Town in Favara is undergoing a transition, and seems to be re-inventing itself, bringing empty old buildings back into use. The Belmonte is an important part of this process. Just a few minutes away by foot is the not-to-be-missed Favara Farm Cultural Park - an excellent night time art installation / exhibition which uses some of the abandoned houses as a venue for modern art displays. The Belmonte Hotel seems to fit right in to this arty context.
Favara's central square is the heart of the town, and the hotel is one minute from the square. During our stay the feast of San Calogero was in full swing, which meant we saw the plaster statue of the saint being paraded round the square, followed by a spectacular firework display.
Seemed we were the only guests in the hotel, it was a Sunday, and we were informed that the restaurant was closed, such a disappointment, as we had come to eat! We were told they would do a 'set menu' and we are Ok with this, as we had asked for 'half board' when we booked online, as at 20 euros per person with water and soft drink or wine, we thought it was a 'good deal' and it suited us. We came down at 7.30 to be greeted by owner. We were told the menu consisted of risotto, followed by swordfish and a caponato? ( olives and capers sauce). Not mad keen on risotto, and do not like capers and olives, but went with the 'flow' and asked if we could have some 'french fries' as well. That was not well received and we got one portion of french fries to share ( maybe a language problem here, who knows?) Risotto was ok, and the fish was beautiful, but we were still hungry, and like ' Oliver Twist' we asked for 'More' We were offered fruit, which we did not want, so we settled on a selection of cheeses. We had water and a lemon drink, and no mention of wine. We felt as though we were 'in the way' and we left as soon as we could to go to bed. Food bill was 44 euros, plus we paid extra for the drinks, so not sure what the 'half board at 20 euros consists of?)
We were looking forward to breakfast as we were hungry, but what a let down. We could not believe our eyes, when we were ceremoniously delivered of a plate, by a young lady, with 4 of the smallest, plainest cakes possible ( 2 unwrapped, and 2 wrapped in cellophane?) Some little pots of jam, and nutella chocolate spread, and a pot of coffee and that was it. We sat and waited for the rest of the food, but nothing came, by this time knew that was the extent of the breakfast ( there was a bowl of fruit on the big table but it did not appeal to us) and we honestly felt insulted by the lack of food, again, as we were the only guests, we felt ' in the way' We booked a 'Bed and Breakfast'...not just a bed, and breakfast in Sicily, can be a beautiful cake, maybe some hams, cheeses etc...excellent coffee..does not have to be a banquet, but what we were offered was not a breakfast . Paid the bill, and for the night and the food it came to well over 130 euros.
We went and found the nearest cafe and had a good breakfast.
This is a stylish place, and they have put a lot of thought into the decor etc, but with us being the only guests, maybe they could have made more of an effort, e mailed us and asked us what we like to eat, seeing as it was only us ( that would have been a nice personal touch and made our stay more enjoyable) Instead, we were given food they wanted us to eat, and we paid good money for it,but it was not our choice.
Oh yes, we had to laugh, for an extra 5 euros, you could have breakfast in your room? Most expensive cakes in Sicily ( have read reviews and people said breakfast was good here..were we in a parallel universe? )
The owners tried their best to be amiable towards us, and they were, we just felt let down by the food experience. At the end of the day, it was their choice of food, for us, but our money that paid for it.
Downside:
- the TV was annoyingly tricky to switch on
- the holder for the shower head had broken off
- the church is right next to the hotel and the church bells are incredibly loud, better make sure the windows are closed before mass starts
- Favara is a pretty depressing place, if you can find something in Agrigento instead (I couldn't) then that would certainly be a nicer place to be.
The hotel is not very easy to find, but worth the effort. It is very modern and fresh, itself renovated, quite design-y. Yes it is furnished with Ikea, but so what. There is parking outside.
The owners are genuinely concerned that you are happy and comfortable, and anxious to make sure you know all the best places to visit in the town and the environs.
We had the only room on the top floor, accessed by a lift to the rooftop terrace. We effectively had our own room with private garden, really great, especially for sitting out after dinner. Favara would not be the place to look for exciting night life. The main square is small but beautiful, lots of older men sit there, just like in a Bertollucci movie, and it can be a bit intimidating to walk around, as you will be looked at closely.
We ate in the hotel both nights, which we would not usually do, preferring to see what is on offer locally. We didn't find anything in the town anyway, apart from Cafe Umberto, again on the square good for a pre-dinner drink and a sit out, but would highly recommend the hotel restaurant. The food is very good, at each meal a complimentary glass of prosecco and a couscous starter were served with a smile. The wine list is very good and reasonable.
At 90 Euro per night it was perhaps pricey for the area, but worth it.
The numerous church bells add a lot of flavour to the place, you will not over-sleep anyway!
We would highly recommend this hotel if you are in the area visiting the valley of the Temples, so much nicer than Agrigento.
This is my longest review ever, there is a lot to say about this hotel and the environs!
Staying here was a good decision, as we speak very little Italian. Julia and Salvatore both speak fluent English, and were very helpful in offering information about the area. They even helped us move our car closer to the hotel in the evening, when we arrived in the midst of a traffic jam one evening.
The buffet breakfast was a good spread, with cappucino and espresso on hand. We opted for dinners at the downstairs restaurant, and were not disappointed. The antipasti and gnocchi were fantastic, as well as the other items we ordered off the menu.
Our one complaint is that we left the bathroom window open one night, and awoke in the middle of the night to a loud thunderstorm. I would recommend closing the windows before going to bed if you are a light sleeper.
Otherwise, it's a good base for exploring the area, and there are a few sights in walking distance from the hotel. The art park just around the corner is a great place to visit if you enjoy contemporary art and design.
The Belmonte is a very good hotel, nice rooms, and very close to its sister hotel, the fancy Alba Palace. Note that you check in AT the Alba. The staff all had good to fairly good English skills, so that made things easier.
Thank heavens the young man at the desk was a parking whiz. Parking is pretty much insane, depending on the time of day you arrive. Just give him the keys and let him do the work! Our tiny car was shifted a few times each day, but it was of no worry to us! And, when we needed the car, it was there quickly.
A/C worked fine, room very clean, bathroom great, and it was QUIET. Just off the main square, lined with cafes for sitting and people watching, from coffee to prosecco.
Breakfast was held each morning at the Alba Palace, with obliging staff to squeeze you fresh o.j. and make you yet another cappucino.
Had dinner one night at the Alba Palace restaurant, separately reviewed in the restaurant section because it was that good, really top notch.
Would we go again? Yep, and this time, we have a really good map!
