Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We had a group of 10 with 2 not cycling. Some had their own bikes and some hired. The Horeke Hotel experience over 3 nights that owner Peter and manager Mike provided was ideal - historic hotel ambience, knowledgeable explanation of the history of the area, superb evening meals and very good quality ensuite accommodation. Four couples stayed in the House over the Water and one couple in the hotel. As part of what was a great value package, cyclists were transported to Kaikohe each day to ensure we rode both days in the best direction. Bike hire rates were reasonable. Those not cycling had a great base from which to do their own thing.

We stayed here with a group of friends . We were staying in the house over the water that had 4 bedrooms each with its own bathroom and a large living room and kitchen which opened onto a lovely deck complete with outdoor chairs umbrella and a table. The rooms were very large, beds comfortable and Bathrooms had everything you could want. It was such a beautiful setting and even included a lovely big spa pool which was welcome for weary bones after a day of cycling. We had breakfast and dinner in the hotel a few minutes away and the meals were reasonably priced and very tasty. Breakfast was continental style with cereal fruit and toast. Prices were very reasonable and Mike the manager was helpful and friendly. I’d thoroughly recommend this as a place to stay.

Have just returned after 3 nights at the Horeke Hotel on the Hokianga Harbour. We were a group of 8 ladies & were allocated the self contained homestead which is perfect for groups. Unfortunately the two rooms with king beds had not been split so 2 of us used a room in the hotel which was comfortable & fine for us. We joined our friends for breakfast & again after dinner evenings. The house is just a few meters down the road & is very comfortable with a large spa pool on the side. We loved sitting on the front deck in the evenings. The dinners at the hotel were excellent. Good wholesome food which we all enjoyed. Peter Maddren the owner of the hotel was easy to deal with & has great knowledge of the history of the area which he shared with us on our first night. He was so interesting & we learnt a lot. Peter organised our bikes & drove us to the start of our ride both mornings & picked us up in Opua at the end of our first day. Also organised a short tour on the harbour which we enjoyed. This is a unique location & the hotel is not a ‘city’ hotel but slightly eclectic.

Stayed here with seven friends. The accommodation in the boathouse over the water was great, very comfy, clean and well appointed bedrooms. A comfortable lounge leading onto a spacious deck with spa room, outdoor seating and umbrellas. The view is superb and it’s worth getting up early to catch the misty morning view. Kitchen only has basic equipment if you plan to self cater.
The food at the pub is simple home cooking, very tasty indeed. The staff are friendly and helpful though a little more training wouldn’t go amiss. (Wine bottles plonked down on the table unopened and a starter was served at the same time as a main, quite a lot of input was required before we got the correct bill at end of stay)
The owner runs the bike shuttle and is a mine of local historical information. Hire cost of bikes is very reasonable too.I would certainly recommend this place to anyone and hope to visit again. The signs on the door and by roadside warning people that this pub is not for general use but only for those staying could be worded in a slightly more polite manner.

Thanks for your review. Covid was the reason for staff shortages and new staff trying to get a handle on things. We sometimes think of ourselves as Faulty towers and we are quite at ease with our casual and homely atmosphere. I am not sure where I fit in, Manwell or Basil, maybe a bit of both.

We rented this house as a base for a Matariki event across the road at the Horeke Hall.
House has been beautifully restored, all bedrooms have ensuite bathrooms and the kitchen / dining is all open plan and over looks the Hokianga Harbour.
The sunset view on the deck was amazing and the spa just tops it all off. Already organising to stay again and do the Opua to Horeke cycle trail.

Stayed overnight after riding through from Ahipara on ebikes to join the Twin Coast Cycle Trail. Pete picked us up at Rawene and took us to the hotel, sharing some of his extensive historical knowledge of NZ's formative years in Northland along the way.

We stayed in the detached house which was perfect for our situation. Dinner at the hotel was delicious and Pete provided mealtime accompaniment, continuing to demonstrate his wide ranging historical knowledge.

The hotel is situated in a stunning location overlooking the waters of the Hokianga Harbour. We had a great time and Pete demonstrated superb hospitality, helping us with charging the bikes and lending us his van so we could visit the Wairere Boulders easily.

The Horeke hotel was a great place to stay after completing the first half of the twin cycle trail. The owner is one of the most obliging people i've ever met and would come pick you up from anywhere, his e bikes were amazing and had great battery life. The food at the Horeke hotel was 10/10, the service was just as good. All in all a great place to stay with beautiful views of a lake and a great place to experience rural New Zealand living.

Not cheap but super value experience. The accomodation is breathtaking with it sitting over the calm Hokianga harbour, outdoor living, very comfortable suites, and even an outdoor spa. The service delivered by Bernadette was warm and very genuine, the proprietor / publican Pete is the best sort of host, and the chef delivered a first class dinner, and with some friendly arm-twisting from Bernadette, also did a special breakfast for us. This place and its staff team is definitely worth going out of the way for - but do allow plenty of time to relax and savour the delights.

Hired Peter to organise our transfers and bag lifts whilst cycling the unmissable Twin Coast trail. His overwhelming ethos is that you enjoy yourself, trust his care, which is genuine, and enjoy the hospitality he creates. He is reliable, not interested in personal gain, and works hard to guarantee your ride and stay at his marvellous hotel is the memorable goal. highly recommended. Marvellous experience and memories.

Cycling the twin coasts trail was so enjoyable with the expertise and hospitality of Pete and the staff at the Horeke Hotel. Nothing was too much trouble - shuttle drop offs and pick ups, brilliant meals, awesome rooms and great areas to appreciate the very special views. A most relaxing and enjoyable stay.
