Our beautiful old style Kauri-Villa, originally built in Kaiwaka in 1871, was moved in 1979 to Horeke (the oldest settlement in the Hokianga and second oldest settlement in New Zealand), where she sits to this very day, watching the tides of Te Hokianga Harbour ebb and flow. At Riverhead Villa local produce is used to create a delicious menu for our guests, whether you just want bed & breakfast or are looking for afternoon tea and evening meals too. The team in the kitchen are pack a mean lunch if you're biking the cycle trail! Hokianga is a wonderful place to explore. Art Galleries exhibiting local established and emerging artists, cafes that offer a wonderful repast, museums and historic places, a car ferry ride to Kohukohu and the other side of the harbour, and the new Manea Footprints of Kupe cultural centre located in Opononi, are just a few of the attractions available.

This old house is very special, full of antiques and history. Staying here we felt it could be 1800 or 2021! We sat on the front porch and heard the sounds of the tui, nearby kids and neighbours, and felt completely peaceful. The old books in the library were a place to devour history of the area, and we learned so much. The garden was lovely, with bougainvillea draped across the veranda, all well tended. Inside was immaculate, and the wooden floors, tightly tucked bedsheets and continental breakfast goodies for us to prepare gave us comfort. What an experience! Paul also prepared dinner for us down at the water's edge restaurant, and it was superb - fresh fish and yummy pudding. It was all a storybook end to our biking adventure. Thank you!

The beautifully restored villa felt warm and welcoming from the moment we arrived. The bedrooms and bathroom were immaculately presented and catered for all our needs. The villa itself radiates a rich history with multiple lounge areas to sit and relax while taking in the breathtaking views over the Hokianga.

The manaakitanga that my mother, brother and I received during our stay at Riverhead Villa truly made us feel as though we were coming home.

Lovely homey stay, Hine and family were lovely host. Our room was airy and spacious with splendid views of the harbour. Expect a very cuddly and cute resident dog you'll want to give lots of belly rubs. Breakfast included a variety of muesli, toast and spreads, french press coffee, and OJ. Returned from Opononi in the evening and drove on Horeke Road which is partially gravel with frequent possums trying to cross, beware!

Riverhead Villa was a fantastic place to base ourselves while exploring the north. It's a beautifully restored old villa and the area has so much history that the hosts are happy to chat about. So lovely to return from a busy day exploring to the smell of z delicious home cooked meal. The breakfast had a good choice of cereals and locally preserved fruit along with yoghurt, toast and condiments and freshly brewed coffee.
If you want a tranquil getaway this is the place for you.

Beautiful location looking over the Hokianga Harbour. Great hosts who cooked a delicious dinner for us and told us lots of the history of this area. Would definitely recommend ordering their dinner as there are no more eating facilities in this small township. Very helpful with anything we needed I.e locked our bikes away in shed for us at night so they were safe. Would definitely stay here again.

What a gem the elegant Riverhead Villa is and an asset to the north. We left behind the hustle and bustle of our everyday lives and instantly relaxed, soaking up the tranquil ambience of our surrounds.

Our hosts Tamalene and Te Aomarie couldn't have been more welcoming and we felt very spoilt and taken care of! Was lovely to explore this humble area of the Hokianga, meeting the proud locals and discover it's rich history. So fortunate that that the Twin Coast Cycle Trail is nearby too for some adventure!

Highly recommended holiday destination.

Hosts were really kind and helpful, and after a 4-5 hr drive in the dark and in the rain, the view from the verandah in the morning was an amazing surprise. Beautifully maintained classic old house, really comfortable bed, really lovely sheets, and a delicious cooked breakfast in the morning. Immaculate bathroom ensuite.

Te Aomarie was a fabulous and welcoming hostess. Our rooms were stunning in a beautifully preserved villa. We spent a fascinating 2 days learning about the area and the community while enjoying the warm hospitality of our wonderful host for whom nothing was too much to ask.
Beautiful views, a rich history- what's not to like! This truly was a memorable stay in the Hokianga and we would highly recommend.

We biked to Horeke and booked ahead for a night at the villa. Such a beautiful house just off the bike trail, with river estuary views, great grounds, a fabulous porch swing, and best of all, a spectacular hostess, Te Aomarie. A genuinely warm and kind person, she made us feel welcome in this beautiful spot. Everything was clean and cozy, and the food was great. A special thanks for an amazing hot custard lemon cake for dessert!!! There was nothing quite like it after a very long day of biking. We slept almost 12 hours. I credit the cake and the quiet for one of our best sleeps and finest bike days ever. Thanks Te Aomarie for your outstanding hostessing -- hope to see you again
