Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

We stayed at the excellent Ivy cottage with our 2 teenage boys, we are both in the hospitality business and we have stayed in some lovely places over the years
The cottage was like a home from home, we wanted for nothing and yes it has a lovely open fire, which is all stocked up ready to use, the kitchen is very large and really modern in it’s equipment and feel.
The bed we slept in on the 2 night stay at the top of the beautiful cottage and we both had the best nights sleep in a long time.
The boys loved the place and wanted to stay longer
We ate at The Durham ox which was top drawer food, the seafood platter and ribeye steaks were as good as we have had any where.
We had breakfast the next morning and again the Full Yorkshire was full of top quality ingredients, good butter, excellent fresh juices, and lots of fresh good quality coffee
We used the doghouse for a drink the following night which is a great idea and place, talking to the locals who were raving about the place and we were not surprised in the slightest to hear rave reviews from the locals, then Dinner again which was as good as the night before.
I have just seen that the Durham ox has got an award of one of the best pubs in Yorkshire I am not surprised in the slightest maybe the doghouse should of been on the list as well
New accommodation is now available so I understand maybe we come back to try that out as it looks very special.
We loved our stay at Ivy cottage and The Durham ox
What a very special place who really do know how to look after customers
It’s the little things that make a difference and this place is something unique and I wish them all the best
Thank you so much

Wow!!! Wat an amazing place to stay location is perfect, staff that go above and beyond and food not to be missed.

We stayed in the pool cabin situated at the bottom of the grounds, a lovely little secluded hideaway. Complete with a heated pool and romantic wood lodge style seating area with a built in log burner for the cooler evenings.

The impressively made up bed was by far one of the comfiest we've ever slept on. Keeping a building like that with it's multiple windows and doors clear of dust and debris must be a challenge but I can honestly say it was immaculate so well done to the housekeeping team.

Bathrooms spacious with luxury in mind and added bits of good old Yorkshire charm. fresh clean robs and fluffy white towels too.

Tea and coffee facilities way above your standard Nescafé and PG tips. This cabin had a coffee machine so from espresso to cappuccino you're covered

After having one of the most relaxing and tasty meals in the bar we spent the rest of our evening relaxing in and around the pool watching the sun go down over the expansive views

The staff, the room, the food, the atmosphere were all outstanding

We WILL be back !!!

The Rose suite felt like a gorgeous cottage with our own entrance via a terrace with outdoor seating. On entry there is a small kitchen with complimentary tea and coffee, leading to a generous living room and spacious family bathroom. The master suite has such a comfy bed where I had the best nights' sleep. Across the hallway is a twin room, so this is perfect for a family stay.

We also had a dip in the Pool Cabin hot tub, with beautiful views over the North Yorkshire countryside. It was just the tonic to soothe aching muscles after the drive up.

This traditional family run pub with gorgeous accommodation, outstanding food and beautiful surroundings, is a true hidden gem and well worth a visit.

Stayed at the Ivy Cottage for 2 nights, I can honestly say the bed on the top floor was the most uncomfortable bed we have ever slept in, in our life's. We nearly resorted to sleeping on the floor and could have left after the first night.
Overall the furniture in the cottage needs updating to make it a more comfortable stay for future guests. The sofa in the living room is like a sack of spuds, the dining chairs in the kitchen are wooden and so uncomfortable.
Dined at The Durham Ox, it was a shame the staff couldn't have been more friendlier and welcoming, the food was only average, nothing special.
I personally would not recommend a stay at the cottage, or a visit to the pub, on the basis of the lack of comfort at the cottage, lack of hospitality and only average food.
I am sorry to write a negative review, but do I feel the cottage needs money spending on it, to counter the price charged.

Recommended by our B&B host, we booked for dinner. Beautiful building, big car park. The Durham Ox has great ambience and super atmosphere. Friendly welcome; lovely staff. We were seated at a beautiful round table; cutlery was good quality and it was a delight to have a “real” napkin made of linen and white - pristine. We ordered roast lamb but don’t like it pink so asked for it to be cooked for longer. I had a glass of red wine; my husband had a glass of beer. The lamb was fabulous and plenty of it too. Delicious vegetables, perfectly cooked.

Having previously reviewed a fantastic lunch back in 2019, I wanted to update on this amazing Yorkshire Gastro Pub.
I can only say the consistent level of food and service is exceptional.
The menu has some amazing regular favorite's on and now the specials seem to cover a wider rage of culinary themes which is brilliant.
The absolutely incredible sharing platters unfortunately dont let you have any space left for pudding but hey who's complaining!!
The dishes are cooked fantastically well and presented as they should be.
Fine quality ingredients cooked and served perfectly.
Without doubt the finest venue in the area a must visit for everyone.
With some lovley luxury rooms to stay over in and an new outside dining area the Durham Ox is leading the way showing how a Yorkshire Gastro Pub should be run.
If you have not visited yet then put it on your list you will not be disappointed !!1

Our second visit to the Durham Ox, a character pub/inn in a picturesque village. On arrival, the welcome was warm, friendly and professional. Our first stop was the “doghouse bar” a separate building - drinks bar, log burners and friendly locals. For dinner, we had the oysters, lobster and chateaubriand, cooked and presented to perfection. Served by highly efficient, friendly and informative waiting team. The wine list included a great selection of quality wines.

The best part of our stay was the “Pool Villa” Private/secluded courtyard garden overlooking open fields, incorporating two double en-suite bedrooms and a central lounge area with its own bar. All areas furnished to a very high standard. The main feature for us was the hot tub set in the middle of the courtyard. If you are visiting the area - you must book this. You won’t be disappointed!!

One of the best experiences we have had and we have stayed in many pubs and hotels! Huge thank you to Ox team in making us feel special. We will be back!!

Overrated and overpriced plus a unexpected service charge.

Booked here for Easter Sunday having seen raving reviews. Arrived hoping for a Easter Roast but found that we’d missed the lunch time roasts and only the evening menu was available which was disappointing.
Minimum vegetarian options but lots of fish options and if you like lobster or scallops you’re in luck.
Prices are gastro-pub higher prices. The atmosphere and service doesn’t quite match this - but just my opinion.
Adding on a service charge was a bit cheeky and not stated in advance.

I booked here because of the good reviews. The bread arrived fairly quickly, it was hardly warm, and there was a batch label stuck under one piece of the baguette, which the waitress said was normally on the outside of the bag. There was hummus served with the butter, however, this did not make up for the mass produced food service baguette.
The starters were both good and we enjoyed them, however, they were with us within less than 10 minutes of sitting down. The plates were whisked away and 5 minutes later the mains arrived. We both had fillet steak and cooked to our preferences well. The dauphonoise potato was ok, the carrot was a puree of not more than a table spoon, 2 mange tout and a piece of broccoli. We had had enough by this point so did not decide to stay for anything further. It was a real disappointment from what I had been expecting.

Great Sunday lunch for a party of 20. We ate in a private room and were extremely well looked after by Shaquia, who took our orders for drinks and food. The room was very well presented. Highly recommended.
